CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/youth-suicide-attempts-ideation-increase-1.6774286
Note: As our Canada researchers catch up from a flood of people who “died suddenly,” items from Ontario and Quebec will appear in next week’s compilation.

She was oh-so-proud of her biggest major purchase when she used the money she saved to buy her first vehicle — a 2002 Dodge Caravan. He died as the result of a catastrophic brain injury suffered from a stroke. Our beautiful long lashed, brown eyed Dakota grew up always seeking the next adventure, enjoying trips to Las Vegas and having the opportunity to go to Dream Racing, where he drove several exotic sports cars at lightning speed around the track. Dakota lived his life. He feared absolutely nothing and lived fast and loved hard. He had a heart of pure gold. He was sensitive, determined, handsome, fun, hilarious, witty, kind, and a good friend, but he was also a spitfire and a handful! We know he is now up in heaven, probably raising a little hell! Suddenly he was gone. We knew he would leave us someday, we were just hoping for more time. It’s not goodbye, it’s “we will see you later”. We will miss your huge smile and tight hugs. Thank you for the memories, our sweet, sweet Dakota. We loved you fiercely and know, without a doubt, that you are finally at peace.

On his final day, Mike went out just how he lived spending time with his family, drinking a double-double for breakfast, an iced cap with lunch and he watched the Toronto Blue Jays win against the Kansas City Royals while drinking a beer, flipping off all the “looky loos” who walked by his room.

Once a week, for nine years, she combined her love of food, community, and creativity to help feed people who depended on the Rainbow Kitchen. Rocket was a strong, passionate woman, a devoted mother, and a truly giving individual. She left us too soon and we will miss her everyday. She brought out the best in people and we are better for having known her. She taught us about kindness and compassion, about following your dreams, and about spending time with those you love. April 12, 2023
He passed away March 25, 2023, from a heart attack on his way to see friends at a Kootenay Ice hockey game in Cranbrook, BC at age 54. Bruce was a kind and funny man at his core. He was passionate about coffee, music, reading, and writing stories, gathered from the content gifted by the world around him. He enjoyed time with his girls, watching sunsets, cooking in his rock n’ roll kitchen, playing pool, traveling, and mostly strolling through life, in search of adventure, and the next good story line or character description. You could often find him at a coffee shop, drawing or scribbling in his note pad, planning his next trip to wherever would be the biggest source of inspiration. Whether this was solo, with a friend, or with his family. Bruce’s goals and ambitions were unmatched, frankly he was sometimes a bit manic, but inspiring, nonetheless.

Allan Donald Hammerback, 75
April 14, 2023
Oakbank - On March 8, 2023, after a short battle with cancer, Al's strong, Swedish heart finally rested & granted him the peace he was looking for. Al was THE BEST Papa a child could ever have. No sleepover or movie night was complete without Papa's popcorn & pop. He loved nothing more than being on a rink & teaching them to skate, or raise a puck or a ring. And his favourite red licorice was always close by for a treat. Each child, in their own way, was special to him. Donations to Cancer Care may speed up the cure to this terrible disease.

Katherine Michelle Weeks-Mitchell, 48, of St Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada, was taken from us too soon and passed away on March 21, 2023, after a courageous battle with Pancreatic cancer. Katherine was a woman who reveled in living life to the fullest on a daily basis. She woke up every morning with a drive to be the best wife, mother, daughter, sister, and citizen she could be. In her professional life, she built an impressive resume as a successful business developer for twenty-plus years for companies such as Aarow Staffing, Waste Management, Rolyn, and Bright View; she accumulated a list of awards and honors, including the 2010 Circle of Excellence from Waste Management, 2021 Sales Growth Leader for Bright View, 2021 Outstanding Sales Mid-Atlantic Region for Bright View (Sales of $2.7M), 2022 President's Club for Bright View. These awards reflect her business acumen, but most importantly, how she treated people. She treated everyone with mutual respect and dignity and was able to balance the needs of the business with the needs of the customers. She also held Professional Membership in associations such as; Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW), Association of General Contractors-Member (AGC), Associations of Building Contractor (ABC), and Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate (HR ACRE). As a career-oriented mother of two, and military spouse of a career Navy SEAL, she found time to volunteer as a Command Ombudsmen at the SEAL command her husband served at. Her selfless service as an Ombudsmen spanned over a decade, including service as an Ombudsmen for Tactical Development and Evaluation Squadron TWO from 2010-2018 and as an Ombudsmen for Naval Special Development Group from 2019-2022. She had a direct line to the Commanding Officer and was the conduit between the families and the Commanding Officer; her candor was always appreciated in challenging situations. Through trying times for our Nation she was steadfast in her resolve to ensure the families got what they required and were informed, which was a challenge in the fast-paced deployment lifestyle of the SEAL Community; once again, she was the kind of person everyone wanted on their team. She will always be remembered for her unrelenting focus and complete dedication to everything she endeavored in, including her marriage, raising children, her career, hockey, and running. Katherine left an indelible mark on the lives of everyone she encountered, and her legacy will live on through her children, the memories, and the stories shared by those she loved so well.
