A hiker in her twenties died on Sunday, May 7 at the Demandolx Pass following a heart attack. The emergency services, who were alerted around 15:30, took over from the witnesses who had started an attempt to resuscitate. This Friday at the end of the afternoon, a 49-year-old man died at the wheel of his car in Bas-en-Basset, on the road between the roundabout and the campsite. The well-known Leiden photographer Niek Bavelaar died unexpectedly on Saturday of a cardiac arrest. He turned 79 years old. For decades, Niek was a welcome sight at numerous events where he was always at the front with his camera at the ready. Due to his merits, he was awarded a royal honor in 2018. Bavelaar took photos for, among others, the 3 October Vereeniging and also for the Historical Association Oud Leiden. For example, he made a major contribution to the calendar of the Historical Association every year. When the Hooglandse Church celebrated its 700th anniversary in 2015, the book 'Seven centuries of the Hooglandse Kerk - the cathedral of light' was published. Thanks to the cooperation of Niek Bavelaar, the book was richly illustrated. He also made numerous photos for the Leids Kerkblad of the Leidse Binnenstadsgemeente. Niek Bavelaar was a well-known appearance in the city because of his activities as a photographer. He took more than a hundred thousand photos of his city Leiden. Niek was everywhere and mainly focused on documentation photography.

It came as a huge shock and completely unexpected, when Morten Ruskjær Friday the 31st. March learned that his father, Torben Strøm Ruskjær, had just died - at the age of just 62 years. Morten Ruskjær had talked to his father an hour earlier. There was nothing unusual. “My father had just measured the tiles at an address on Granvej in Frederiks. He got into the car to calculate the price. The customer looked out the window and could see my father drinking a soda while he was writing down. When he looked out again three or four minutes later, my father lay across the wheel and was dead. It came like lightning from a clear sky”, says Morten Ruskjær. The cause of death has not yet been found, but the doctors at Skejby believe that Torben Strøm Ruskjær died of a large blood clot in his heart.
