Fatal crash near Hancock Park Elementary School due to 'medical emergency'
April 27, 2023
Los Angeles, CA - An investigation continues into a crash that killed a woman and critically injured her 6-year-old daughter near Hancock Park Elementary School. Authorities say the driver of the pickup involved remains out of custody, and the incident "appears to be a tragic accident" resulting from a medical emergency. The fatal crash has also sparked calls for increased traffic safety around schools, including the installation of speed humps near all schools in the city and more crossing guards. Ghadah Abduljabbar, 33, died at the scene of Tuesday's crash near Ogden Drive and Colgate Avenue in the Mid-Wilshire area, the Los Angeles County coroner's office reported. The girl, a first-grader at Hancock Park Elementary, remains hospitalized in critical condition. Her name has not been publicly released by authorities. Abduljabbar and her daughter were walking in a crosswalk when they were struck by a southbound pickup that continued south and crashed into an apartment building. The woman died at the scene. The driver of the pickup, a man around 30, was taken to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. Los Angeles Police Department Chief Michel Moore told the Police Commission there were early signs that the driver may have been impaired. On Wednesday, however, the LAPD issued a statement saying the crash may not have been the result of any criminal activity. “At this time, based on the totality of the circumstances, this appears to be a tragic accident that possibly resulted from a medical emergency," police said.
No cause found yet for fatal plane crash
April 27, 2023
Guilford County, NC — The preliminary investigation of the crash of a small plane that earlier this month near the Guilford-Randolph County line found no clear reason that the plane went down. The four-page preliminary report that the National Transportation Safety Board released this week said that the single-engine experimental Vans RV-12 gained altitude for about 30 seconds after taking off about 11:30 a.m. on April 11 at Greensboro Executive Airport in Climax, southeast of Greensboro. Video surveillance from the airport showed the plane suddenly stopped climbing and abruptly veered to the left. After turning left again, the plane flew south directly along the path of U.S. 421 near the treetop level. A woman who was driving north on U.S. 421 told investigators that the plane entered a sharp turn just before striking the Monnett Road bridge railing. Motorists who stopped to help were able to pull James Anthony Foecking, 39, of Randleman, from the plane, but Kurtis Dale Williams, 52, of Kernersville died in the crash. Both men worked as commercial pilots. All cockpit switches, instrumentation and computer memory devices were destroyed by the fire, the report said. The engine was found in debris a few feet from the cockpit, but there was no evidence of catastrophic engine failure. Maintenance records show that the plane was last inspected on Sept. 1, 2022.
