CANADA
Note: Quebec and other provinces will appear in next week’s compilation as our research team continues to catch up with the deluge.
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Two actors “died suddenly”:
Samantha Weinstein, 28
May 26, 2023
Samantha Weinstein, an actor who starred in the 2013 remake of "Carrie" and voiced roles in several cartoons, has died. She was 28. Her father, David Weinstein, confirmed in a statement to USA TODAY Thursday that she died of ovarian cancer on May 14 at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Canada. "After two and a half years of cancer treatment, and a lifetime of jet setting around the world, voicing a plethora of cartoon animals, making music, and knowing more about life than most people ever will, she is off on her next adventure," the post reads. Weinstein continued to live a full life while undergoing cancer treatment. She married Michael Knutson on October 29, 2022, and the two honeymooned in Japan. "Something I've learned in the 18 months since I was first diagnosed, is the worst things in the world can turn out to be incredible blessings wrapped in sandpaper," she wrote. "Getting cancer is the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, but in the strangest of ways it has also been the best thing. I’m still living with cancer, and with my parents since the future is uncertain (on the bright side, we’ve never been closer!). I continue to work in my dream career as a voice actor. I have more love in my life and for myself than I ever could have imagined, and I see every day as a gift.”

Thank you Canadian team. You’re work is endless and must be soul crushing but so necessary to not let these people be disappeared. 🙏
