‘World leading’ scientist dies aged 29 after ‘pulled muscle’ turned out to be rare cancer

One of Britain’s top young scientists has died aged just 29, from a rare form of cancer originally diagnosed as a pulled muscle. Kirsty Smitten was a “world-leading” expert set to potentially help save tens of millions of lives with a new type of antibiotic she had developed. She was named a Forbes magazine’s ‘30 under 30’ scientist and in February this year was crowned FSB’s young entrepreneur of the year. She passed away in hospital with her family beside her on 4 October, having spent the past seven weeks in Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Her cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma, was so rare her surgeon had never seen it before. Only two people are diagnosed with it a year in the UK. Her ordeal began in November last year she was woken up the night with severe chest pain. Speaking in March this year, she said when she first arrived at A&E with severe heart pain she was sent away by the GP and told to take codeine for a pulled muscle. But she insisted something was wrong so waited for 11 hours before a CT scan revealed a cancerous tumour in her right atrium. Paying tribute, Ms Smitten’s sister-in-law, Sukhi Smitten told MailOnline: “Kirsty fought to the very end, but this was such an aggressive cancer she couldn’t beat it.”
Former champion boxer and Olympian Hugh Russell dies aged 63

Tributes have been paid to the former boxing champion and Olympic medalist Hugh Russell following the announcement of his death. Known as 'Little Red' the Belfast man competed in the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics before becoming a British champion in two weight classes. He was 63 years old. It is reported he suffered a short illness. At the 1978 Commonwealth Games he won a bronze in the flyweight division. He won bronze at the Moscow Olympics two years later. He then signed with Barney Eastwood and was a professional from 1981 to 1985 winning the Irish Bantamweight title and the British Flyweight title. Following his retirement from the sport he went on to become an award-winning photographer with The Irish News.

The Royal Navy is in shock after the sudden death of HMS Queen Elizabeth's former first lieutenant. Tributes have poured in for Commander Robert "Bob" Hawkins whose legendary Naval career spanned six decades. Commander Hawkins, who died at the weekend, joined the Navy in 1978, aged 17. Over the years, he saw seismic shifts in the military branch's technical capabilities as well as vast social changes. Commander Hawkins spent most of his career involved in the world of mine warfare, first qualifying as a mine warfare diving officer in 1982.

The Queen legend, 76, took to social media on Thursday (11.10.23) evening to reveal that "dear friend" Phil Webb - who had worked as his driver for over 30 years - had passed away suddenly after suffering a heart attack. He wrote on Instagram: "This is one of the saddest days of my life. Last night we lost Phil Webb to a heart attack. Phil, my dedicated driver for over 30 years was my family’s dearest friend and protector and the kindest and most decent man I have ever had the pleasure to meet. We are all devastated and join with Phil’s wife and son in grieving for the last man on Earth to deserve this much too early passing away."

London - A South London council has announced a local councilor died last week, with his colleagues since sharing tributes to celebrate his life. Conservative Councilor Andrew Lee, who represented the Hayes and Coney Hall ward for Bromley Council, passed away “suddenly” on October 5, the local authority said in a statement yesterday (October 10). Cllr Lee was elected as a ward councilor in 2022 and was previously the campaign manager for the Bromley Conservatives for 14 years. Conservative Councilor Alexa Michael, who represents the Hayes and Coney Hall ward, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) that Cllr Lee fulfilled a lifelong wish to become a ward councilor when he was elected.

Rugby player dies after suffering cardiac arrest during match

Cambridgeshire - Emergency services responded to calls that Arturas Rudys, 27, had collapsed during a match at Wisbech Rugby Club on Chapel Road, Wisbech, on Saturday. Responders carried out CPR and used a defibrillator, but he could not be resuscitated and died at the scene. Diss Rugby Football Club, Wisbech's opponents in the Eastern Counties First Division fixture, said in a post on Facebook the game had been abandoned following the incident. A statement released on Wisbech Rugby Club's website on Sunday said: "It is with great sadness that the club announces the death of Arturas Rudys during a match played on Saturday 14th October.”

Moments after telling her dad she wanted to go and play with her toys, Agnese Vaivars, 2, suddenly died at her home in Goole, leaving her parents heartbroken. The 'happy little girl' had been walking to her playroom with her dad when she suddenly fell and tragically died. The two-year-old had been suffering with flu when she died. Floral tributes have been laid outside the family’s home in East Yorkshire. Her dad explained that she had said she wanted to go to her playroom and as they had walked from the living room to her playroom - where all her toys were kept - she had taken a couple of steps when she suddenly fell. As she fell her eyes closed, her jaw cramped and her body went cold.

The family of a five-year-old boy who died a week after he was sent home from a hospital emergency department with antibiotics instead of being admitted has rejected a report which found that his care was appropriate and "an admission was not clinically required". Yusuf Mahmud Nazir died on November 23, 2022 - eight days after he was seen at Rotherham Hospital with severe tonsilitis and sent home with medication. The report published by NHS South Yorkshire concluded: "We consider that on the basis of Yusuf's observations, presentation and diagnosis there was a reasonable expectation that the antibiotics prescribed were appropriate and an admission was not clinically required." Two days later, Yusuf was given further antibiotics by his GP for a possible chest infection, but his family became so concerned they called an ambulance and insisted the paramedics take him to Sheffield Children's Hospital rather than Rotherham. Yusuf was admitted to the intensive care unit on November 21 but developed multi-organ failure and suffered several cardiac arrests which he did not survive.

‘Social butterfly' teenager, 18, dies of cancer weeks after having stomach pains

Scotland - The family of a “social butterfly” teenager who first complained of stomach pains and was later diagnosed with cancer weeks before her death has spoken of their heartache. Kaya-Imaani Chambers, 18, visited her GP in February complaining of stomach pain and underwent tests and returned when she developed rib pains, lumps in her neck as well as coughing fits. Kaya, from Glasgow, was rushed to A&E in April and was prescribed a ten-week course of antibiotics as doctors believed she had kidney stones. Weeks later she was back at hospital with a swollen arm and more tests finally discovered she had cancer. She died six weeks later. Mum Donna, 56, told GlasgowLive : “It came as such a shock to everyone. Kaya was so bubbly, funny and a total social butterfly, she loved her friends. It has been so difficult without her; I still expect to see her about the house. We had known something was wrong but for someone so young and active to receive that sort of diagnosis was devastating. Kaya had been still working up to that point and was still doing tests in university, so it came as an absolute shock. We all miss her dreadfully."
Doctors were unable to pinpoint what cancer Kaya had but it is believed to have started in her liver before spreading to her bones and lungs.

The pair was scrolling through TikTok and laughing about different things before they called it a day. But the following morning, Laura, an NHS worker at the Royal Stoke University Hospital never woke up. Carl, who got up early and didn't want to disturb his wife, had left for work but he was unexpectedly called back home. When he returned, he found his three-year-old daughter, Ava, coming down the stairs after she failed to wake up her mum. Laura, who was only 32, has also left behind 20-month-old Mia, step-daughter Gracie-Mae, 13, her older sister Sam and parents Karen, 57, and Paul Davies, 59. An inquest has been opened to determine the cause of the nurse's death who was described as a "Disney Queen" with the "most caring heart".

A mum who claimed she was misdiagnosed with 'Covid lung' when she actually had lung cancer has died aged 35. Brogan Williams, who was a nurse, has been remembered as someone of "wit, cheekiness and heart" by I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here winner Giovanna Fletcher, with whom she did a charity walk earlier this year. Brogan had been in remission for breast cancer when she discovered a lump on her neck. She then experienced speech problems and shortness of breath. In July 2021 she was diagnosed with Covid lung and advised to rest at home. But just 10 days later she was told her cancer had returned. The nurse, who lived in Pendeford, Wolverhampton, was told she'd need palliative care and was given a life expectancy of two weeks. Brave Brogan said she put her "positive pants on" upon hearing the news and was determined to "keep on fighting". But on Tuesday, October 10, news of Brogan's tragic death was announced on her Instagram page.

Earlier the devastation of her many friends was echoed by Mossley Ladies Hockey Club, of which she was a former member. "We are devastated to learn of the untimely death of our former club member Caroline Cromie, whilst on holiday in Spain,” said the post. “Caroline was our 1st X1 goalkeeper for many years and no-one quite lit up a room like she did - everyone who knew her loved her.”

Passenger dies on Jet2 flight on his way home from Spain

Spain - A man has died on a flight home from Spain. The man, who wasn't identified, was returning home from Spain via East Midlands Airport, in Leicestershire, on Friday (October 6) when there was a medical emergency. It's not clear exactly what this was, but Jet2 cabin crew gave him CPR. They were unable to save him. The flight was forced to turn around and touch back down in Spain, meaning it set off seven hours after it was meant to. Jet2 confirmed that a male passenger flying from Reus on the Costa Dorada to East Midlands Airport became unwell and 'required medical attention'.

Portugal - A British man who was found dead this morning on a paradise Algarve beach was 'seen eating dinner the night before with no sign he was in trouble,' locals have claimed. The 27-year-old backpacker's body was discovered around 8 am today on Armona Island's white sand beach just off the coastal town of Olhao after a local raised the alarm. Emergency responders including maritime police raced to the scene after being alerted but could do nothing to save him. Local sources said: 'He was seen the night before having dinner in a restaurant on the island with no sign that he was in trouble or ill. Several people were interviewed on the island by police investigators. Everything points to the dead man having gone into the water that night. 'Only an autopsy will now be able to clarify what happened, whether he was the victim of a sudden illness, or if he hit his head while diving or even if he was surprised by the rising tide while sleeping on the beach.’
