Mystery rise in fatal cardiac arrests for the most affluent

Paramedics are investigating a mysterious marked rise in fatal cardiac arrests among affluent Scots since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Overall the survival rates among people who had a cardiac arrest outside of hospital improved dramatically in the years before the pandemic. However, the gains were reversed during social distancing and the strain on hospitals resulting from coronavirus. Figures show only 8 per cent of patients from Scotland’s most affluent neighbourhoods survived a cardiac arrest last year compared with 10 per cent from the poorest households. The Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) attempts to resuscitate approximately 3,000 cardiac arrest patients every year but only about 300 survive. Overall survival rates hit a record low in 2020-21 at the height of the pandemic, when just [paywall].

Wilko Johnson, British rocker who defied cancer, dies at 75

London - Wilko Johnson, the guitarist with British blues-rock band Dr. Feelgood who had an unexpected career renaissance after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, has died. He was 75. A statement posted Wednesday on Johnson’s official social media accounts on behalf of his family said the musician died Monday evening at his home in southeast England. At a time of flamboyant glam and indulgent prog rock, they played a then-unfashionable brand of blues and R&B, dressed in cheap suits that made them look, Johnson said later, like “shoddy bank robbers." Johnson helped give Dr. Feelgood a dangerous edge with his choppy, relentless guitar style and thousand-yard glare — a look terrifying enough to earn him a role later in life as silent executioner Ser Ilyn Payne on “Game of Thrones.” The anarchic outfit inspired bands who would soon drive the U.K. punk explosion, and teetered on the edge of global fame, scoring a U.K. No. 1 album, tours of the U.S. and a deal with CBS records. Then in 1977 Johnson walked out amid friction with charismatic lead singer Lee Brilleaux, who died in 1994.
In 2012, Johnson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was told it was terminal. The prospect of death unexpectedly revived his creative energies. He declined chemotherapy, decided to go on one last tour, and recorded a “final” album, “Going Back Home,” with Roger Daltrey of The Who. “I suddenly found myself in a position where nothing matters anymore,” he told the Associated Press in 2013. “I’m a miserable so-and-so normally. ... I’d be worrying about the taxman or all the things that we worry about that get in the way of the real things. And suddenly it doesn’t matter. All of that doesn’t matter. You walk down the street and you feel intensely alive. You’re `Oh, look at that leaf!′ You’re looking around and you think, `I’m alive. Ain’t it amazing?’” In another twist, a fan who was also a cancer specialist offered to help. After surgery to remove a 3-kilogram (6.6-pound) tumor, Johnson announced in 2014 he was cancer-free. He released another album, “Blow Your Mind,” in 2018, and played gigs with his Wilko Johnson Band until last month.
Daltrey paid tribute to "the uncompromising Bard of Canvey.” “More than anything Wilko wanted to be a poet," he said. "I was lucky to have known him and have him as a friend. His music lives on but there’s no escaping the final curtain this time.”

Marcus Sedgwick, celebrated children’s author, dies aged 54

Author Marcus Sedgwick, who wrote more than 40 books for children and adults, has died aged 54. His literary agency RCW has confirmed his death, which it described as “unexpected”. Sedgwick’s work was shortlisted for more than 30 awards, including five nominations for the Carnegie medal, two for the Edgar Allan Poe award and four for the Guardian children’s fiction prize. He was also the most noted author in the history of the Printz award, with one win and two honour books. He won the Branford Boase award for his debut novel, Floodland, and the Booktrust Teenage prize for My Swordhand Is Singing.

Nick Fisher missing: Body found in search for Bafta-winning TV writer

Police have found a body in the search for a missing writer and presenter who was a friend of celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Nick Fisher, whose books included Sea Fishing - River Cottage Handbook, co-written with the TV cook, had last been seen in his home village of Hooke in west Dorset on Tuesday. Following searches of the area, police said they had found a body in Dorchester. A Dorset Police spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious. Mr Fisher, who won a Bafta award for creating the ITV children’s drama The Giblet Boys also wrote episodes of EastEnders, Casualty, New Tricks, and Holby City.
Confirming his death, a police spokesman said: “Officers carrying out inquiries to locate a missing man from west Dorset have very sadly located a body. Nick Fisher, aged 63, was last seen in Hooke during the afternoon of Tuesday November 15. Following extensive inquiries and searches by officers, assisted by Dorset Search and Rescue (DorSAR), the body of a man was sadly located in Dorchester during the morning of Thursday November 17. The death is not being treated as suspicious and HM coroner has been notified."

British heavyweight title challenger Mark Potter, 47, dies of cancer

Former British heavyweight title challenger and all-around fighting man Mark Potter has tragically died of cancer at 47. Potter was diagnosed with a deadly outcome after discovering stomach cancer in January. However, being the fighter he was, Potter refused to take it lying down. The Londoner battled tooth and nail against the 18-month terminal prediction and went on a fund-raising campaign all year. Potter raised over £33,000 of his £35,000 goal and participated in a benefit night of boxing in June. Julius Francis was among those to compete, alongside others. The one-time Danny Williams opponent kept his chin up when taking each day at a time during what must have been a terrifying ordeal. In a synopsis on his Go Fund Me page, optimism was the key to keeping it together for Mark and his family. “Mark was diagnosed with stage four cancer of the stomach and bone. The awful news came totally out of the blue. As you can imagine, it has sent us all sideways. Mark is the fittest and the healthiest man I know. An absolute mountain of a man with a heart of gold."

ITV pays tribute to Technical Director, Roger Pearce, after death at Qatar World Cup

Doha, Qatar - Roger Pearce, 65, passed away suddenly in his hotel room last night. He was the technical director for ITV Sports on assignment to cover the World Cup in Qatar. No cause of death is listed, only that it was during the night in his hotel room. ITV Meridian’s Head of News, Alison Nice said the following of his death, "Roger was loved and respected by all who worked with him. The sad news of his death has come as a terrible shock to everyone." This was to have been Roger Pearce’s final assignment before enjoying retirement in five weeks.
DJ and record collector Dez Parkes has died

DJ and record collector Dez Parkes has died. Friend Fitzroy Anthoney Facey, who is also director of The Soul Survives Magazine, confirmed Parkes’ death over the weekend. It is unclear at this stage what caused his death. Parkes began DJing at Soho venue Whisky A Go Go in the 1970s, before teaming up with Trevor Shakes to launch Spats, the UK’s first club dedicated to underground boogie music. In 1987, he was approached by RCA Records to curate ‘Rare’, a series of compilations responsible for kickstarting the rare groove revival. He went on to helm a handful of other notable compilations, including ‘Motown Rare Grooves’, ‘The Best Of Pleasure’ and ‘Mastercuts’. He was dubbed the “walking encyclopedia of music” by friends after three decades of working and mentoring in dance music, according to Mixmag.

Man dies after receiving cancerous transplant kidney

A fit and healthy father died after doctors mistakenly gave him a cancerous kidney transplant, an inquest heard yesterday. Parminder Singh Sidhu, 49, passed away in agony in March – within a year of the procedure – after doctors failed to spot a tumor. Two other patients who also received organs from the same donor later developed cancer. The inquest was told medics carried out a scan of Mr Sidhu's body four months after the 'successful' transplant, during which a 1cm lesion was spotted. It was initially dismissed as a cyst. Only later was it found to be a highly aggressive form of cancer which took hold directly from the donor organ.
Ashford girl Keira Bowles died overnight after day at Folkestone beach, inquest hears

A "funny, caring and polite" young girl died suddenly of unknown causes overnight, an inquest has heard. Tributes have been paid to two-year-old Keira Bowles, who was found unresponsive at her grandparents' house in Ashford. The inquest heard she had gone to the beach with her mother Abby on August 10, the day before the tragedy. They had travelled to Folkestone with a friend of Abby's and her two children, and enjoyed a day at the seaside, having chips for dinner before returning to Keira's grandparents' house in Singleton. The mums then put their children to bed and travelled to Canterbury to see friends, returning early in the morning. The inquest at County Hall in Maidstone on Monday heard that Keira's grandmother had checked on her at 2 am. The little girl woke up soon after and went back to sleep after having a bottle of milk.
Area Coroner Katrina Hepburn read excerpts from a police statement which detailed that Abby had woken up the following morning and had gone to check on Keira, finding her unresponsive. The family friend had given her emergency CPR until paramedics arrived, but tragically nobody was able to revive the young girl. A police investigation found nothing amiss from the room, in which she stayed regularly, with an investigating officer adding that the young mum "clearly looked after her daughter's needs". A post mortem found nothing significant to suggest a cause of death. The inquest heard that there was also nothing in Keira's medical history that could help determine a cause, which was given as Sudden Unexpected Death in Childhood, or SUDC. SUDC is the term given to the sudden death of a child 12 months of age or older that remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation. It forced Ms Hepburn to leave the conclusion of the inquest open.

Selby RUFC have confirmed that club captain Tom Edwards has died suddenly at the age of 29. The club said in a statement: “Selby RUFC is deeply saddened to inform you of the sudden passing of 1st XV captain Tom Edwards. Tom, aged 29, passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning. Tom was popular and well-loved across all ages within the club. He will be sadly missed.”

Tributes have been paid to a female rugby player who has sadly died aged 19. Beth Branson played for the Bridgwater & Albion Women’s Rugby team and was described as a "lovely person and great team member and club person." In a statement, the club paid tribute to Beth this evening (November 9.) They said in a heartfelt message that Beth was "taken far too early" and are sending their condolences to Beth's family and friends.

Gareth Atkinson, known as Gaz, unexpectedly died this year aged 43, leaving his family and friends devastated. The ‘ Rugby pitch warrior’ is described as a great friend with ‘so many stories to tell.’ Ben Parker, a friend of Gareth launched the GoFundMe page in honour of him to relieve his family of the ‘truly painful’ process of funeral costs. “As friends of Gareth we are devastated by his recent and unexpected passing.”

Husband told wife had hours to live 'and wouldn't see the morning'

An influential woman who was "always standing up for what she believed in" died two days before her birthday. Laura Donovan-Hall, 34, died from brain cancer on October 30 at Woodlands Hospice in Fazakerley with her family by her bedside. Laura first fell ill in August after she suddenly suffered from a seizure at her home in Bootle and was rushed to A&E. Laura's husband David Hall, 36, told the ECHO: "It was very sudden and very unexpected. They found a growth in her brain and the consultant took a look at it and said it doesn't look too bad, 'it looks like we can do something about this.' So she went in for brain surgery." Doctors were unable to remove the entire tumour during surgery and Laura was told to await the results of a biopsy. The 34-year-old's condition deteriorated rapidly during this time, and she was soon admitted to Aintree University Hospital. It was here that David was told the devastating news that Laura's cancer was far more aggressive than doctors initially suspected, and she was diagnosed with a stage four brain tumour called Glioblastoma.

Mother Amie Walton, 30, was battling terminal cancer when partner Chris Mills died of a ruptured stomach ulcer suddenly while spending the night in hospital with her. She was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer after visiting her GP for persistent heartburn. Amie, who had liver and bowel cancer, woke up on July 18 in Good Hope Hospital in Birmingham to find her partner, 42, had died. Exactly four weeks later, on August 18, Amie, passed away while visiting her father in Devon. Despite receiving treatment for her cancer, she was told in May that it had spread, leaving her with 50 tumours in each lung.
Former Reading forward Francis Joseph has passed away aged 62

A journeyman striker during the 1980s and 1990s, Joseph spent a part of 1987/88 campaign at Elm Park, scoring twice in 11 appearances in the season of Simod Cup success. He became the Dons' first black player in the Football League upon making his debut in 1980. Among stars paying tribute are Sheffield United teammate Brian Deane, who said: "Sad news this morning hearing Francis Joseph has passed away. Another one I’m grateful to for some early memories in football. What a guy." Wally Downes Jr, son of Wimbledon legend and former Royals coach Wally Downes, also commented: "Francis Joseph was a wonderful monster of a man who my family really loved. He was hugely & rightly proud of his boy Zak. Spoke to him last month when he called to talk boxing & we laughed for about an hour. He was still ready & willing to fight absolutely everyone."

The Scrappers Bolton pay tribute to friend and workman

George Oros, a 48-year-old scrapyard worker, failed to show up at the Metro Scrapyard in Bolton for work. After his alarmed friends called emergency services, they broke down the door to enter his home. There they found George dead on his settee still dressed in his work clothes from the previous days work. Terry Walker, the owner of the scrapyard said this of George after his sudden death, “ He was hard working and a real character. When he failed to turn up to work, we knew something was wrong because he was here every day.” His fellow scrapyard employees have worked to raise money for George’s cremation and his ashes will be scattered at the scrapyard. No cause of death has been determined.

Dad who died suddenly while walking in the Lake District with friends is named

A fundraiser has been set up to help raise money for the funeral of a Lancashire dad who died suddenly in the Lake District. Dave Rushworth, from Lancaster, was out walking with friends when he suddenly fell ill on Saturday (November 12). He sadly died despite numerous attempts to save his life. The Lancashire man was on Whin Rigg at the time of the incident, with a rescue team being notified at 12.40 pm on Saturday. The rescue crew quickly arrived alongside an air ambulance. Despite the best efforts of the team, and the walker's friends and passers-by, Dave died at the scene. Since his death, tributes have poured in for Dave as well as his friend setting up a fundraiser to help cover the funeral costs.

'Big Dave' dies suddenly while on holiday with friends in Spain

A man described as a "lovely gentle giant" has died suddenly while on holiday with friends in Spain. Dave Fearnley, also known as "big Dave" and "Crock", was on holiday with three friends when he started complaining of feeling sick. As his group went out for the night, the 68-year-old from Warrington, said he was feeling "awful" and was going to stay at the hotel. Once his friends returned, he heard them enter the hotel and got up to have a drink of water with them. He told his friends how he still wasn't feeling great and went back to bed again. When his friends woke up the next day, November 5, they found Dave dead in bed and phoned for an ambulance. A close friend of the family, Sarah Golden, spoke to The ECHO on behalf of the family and described Dave as a "lovely gentle giant".

Moving tributes have been paid to a hugely popular grandmother following her sudden death aged 57. Melissa Morgans was well known in her home village Cwmaman for her kindness and the trust she inspired in people. Melissa, who died on Wednesday of causes not yet confirmed, spent seven years as a support worker but her whole life was defined by generous and caring interactions with others, said her only daughter Yasmine. "Strangers would come up to her in the street and tell her their life story," Yasmine told WalesOnline. "I think a lot of people felt they could talk to her and not be judged. She would do anything for anybody."

A 'caring and fun' mum has unexpectedly passed away whilst working at The Range. Tracy fell ill whilst on shift at the store and despite the efforts from her colleagues and the emergency services she tragically died, reports the Liverpool Echo. The mother went into her workplace on November 11 but started feeling unwell around midday. The emergency services were then called and soon arrived at the Croft Retail Park store to attempt to treat the worker. However, despite the collective efforts from the emergency services to save Tracy's life she sadly died not long later on Friday.

A mother-of-four who was getting ready to welcome her first grandchild died just two days after being diagnosed with cancer. Janice Cassidy Adair, 46, died on August 31, after being diagnosed with bone and liver cancer only two days before. Nail technician Janice had been feeling unwell for a couple of weeks and had bloods taken by her GP, who thought she was jaundiced. On August 2, Janice, from Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, was told to go straight to A&E and medics later told her she had inoperable cancer. She died at University Hospital Monklands, North Lanarkshire, just weeks after learning she was having her first grandchild. Her heartbroken daughter Laura Kirk, 19, said she was glad her mother lived to see her gender reveal on August 15, adding that Janice couldn’t wait to meet her grandson.

Hannah Button "lived for her children and animals", her mother Sara Higgins said in tribute ahead of her funeral next week. The mother-of-two, from Beccles, died in July, with an initial post-mortem examination proving inconclusive. Mrs Higgins said: "We had no idea she had a heart problem. Looking back, she was always tired but she fought through it. She started having panic attacks which made her really ill afterwards." Further tests were carried out and it was ruled "highly likely" Miss Button suffered a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and granulomatous myocarditis. Mrs Higgins added: "They believe it caused a fatal cardiac arrhythmia, but thankfully she wouldn't have known anything about it.”

Shock as Wordsley school teacher Andy Blunt dies suddenly

Stourbridge - The school in Brierley Hill Road was closed for the day yesterday after the shock news of the death of head of science Andy Blunt, who passed away unexpectedly on Monday November 14. Mr Blunt joined The Wordsley School in September 2011 as a newly qualified teacher and having worked his way through the ranks he was appointed as head of science in 2019. In a statement issued today, headteacher Mr Burton described Mr Blunt as "Wordsley through and through, a teacher, a leader, esteemed colleague and a trusted and dear friend. Andy was absolutely selfless and always put the needs of others before his own. It is incomprehensible to think that Andy will no longer be a part of our world and without doubt, our world is a poorer place without him to share it with. This tragic and sudden loss is devastating for our staff, who worked so closely with Andy; a man who devoted his entire professional career to supporting those around him. ”

Man dies after suffering medical episode at wheel before crashing into central reservation
A man has tragically died after suffering a medical episode at the wheel before crashing into a central reservation barrier. The driver had been travelling on the M61 on Tuesday (15 November) approaching junction four for Atherton when the smash happened, police said. He's understood to have fallen ill before his vehicle collided with the central reservation of the busy motorway. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. No further details about the man's age or identity have been revealed at this stage. No more details about the nature of the medical episode have been confirmed.
“Died suddenly” while diving:
A British man died while scuba diving at a popular beach off the Spanish island of Lanzarote.
The unnamed 60-year-old got into trouble in the water on the south of the island before midday on Monday. It is thought he suffered a cardiac arrest. A lifeguard tried to help him but was unable to save his life. The manager of the local Security and Emergency Consortium, Enrique Espinosa, said: ‘The Brit had all the correct permits to be able to dive but diving is a high-risk sport and anything that goes wrong can be fatal.’ A post-mortem has already taken place, but autopsy results are seldom made public in Spain. It is believed the man had health issues, but it is not clear what these were. It is also unknown whether he was diving on his own or with a group. Qualified scuba divers are usually discouraged from diving alone, as it means there is no help available if they get into trouble. The beach where the pensioner died, Playa Flamingo, is a popular location for divers – both experienced and beginner – because of its calm waters and abundance of fish.

A man has died onboard an EasyJet flight that was travelling into London. The plane was headed for Gatwick Airport from Cyprus this afternoon when a man became ill mid-flight. Urgent attempts to resuscitate the passenger using a defibrillator sadly proved unsuccessful. Other passengers first grew concerned when a dark-haired traveller, aged around 50, wasn't waking up. The man appeared to be travelling alone. An anonymous source praised the way in which easyJet crew handled the distressing incident, the Daily Star reports.

Man being processed at Manston detention centre in Kent dies

A man who arrived in the UK on a small boat a week ago and was being processed at Manston has died, the Home Office said on Saturday. He became ill while at the Kent detention site and was taken to hospital, but later died. It is understood that he arrived on 12 November and was taken ill on Friday evening. “We can confirm a person staying at Manston has died this morning [Saturday] in hospital after becoming unwell,” a Home Office spokesperson said. The Home Office said the man was not believed to be suffering from any infectious illness. The Guardian has received unconfirmed reports that he had contracted sepsis.

Armadale, Scotland - Police in West Lothian are investigating after the body of a man was discovered this morning in Armadale. Police Scotland issued a statement which said: “Around 8 am on Thursday, 17 November 2022, a 20-year-old man was found dead within Watson Park, Armadale. “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the man. A post mortem examination will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of death which police are not treating as suspicious at this time. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

The death of a man in Glasgow is being treated as "unexplained" by police after a body was found in a home. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 10 am on Monday, 21 November, 2022, the body of a 46-year-old man was found within a property in Dougrie Place, Castlemilk. Tamworth - A woman's body has been found in a popular park, police have sadly confirmed. Officers and paramedics were called to Wigginton Park in Tamworth yesterday morning, November 14. Staffordshire Police have today confirmed: "We were called to Wigginton Park in Tamworth at 9.30 am yesterday (Monday 14 November) following reports of a sudden death. Sadly, a woman was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service. Her death is currently being treated as unexplained."

The cervical cancer awareness advocate announced in October 2021 that she returned home to Ireland from the US after the treatment she received there no longer worked. The medical team at Georgetown University Hospital in Maryland [sic] recommended that Ms Phelan return home to receive palliative chemotherapy. The hearing of the trial on the death of the young 23-year-old Irish footballer Roy Butler, which occurred suddenly after the administration of the covid vaccine, was postponed due to "lack of commitment" by the pharmaceutical company which, at the moment, did not provide the requested information. Waterford's Roy Butler died five days after receiving the Janssen vaccine. The Janssen vaccine is the Covid 19 "one shot" vaccine (single dose) produced by Johnson & Johnson. Roy Butler had felt ill soon after receiving the vaccine at a vaccination center on August 12, 2021. He had complained of headache, fever, lightheadedness and jaw pain in the days following the administration. He tried to continue his normal activities despite not feeling well. On Sunday, August 15, Roy went to work on the night shift at the Bausch and Lomb contact lens manufacturing facility. After finishing work, he went home and slept before going to the gym. He couldn't do any physical activity in the gym and came home early. At home, he complained of feeling intense moments of heat and cold and went upstairs to his bedroom where his condition deteriorated rapidly. The talented young footballer, who was planning to travel to Dubai, began to suffer from convulsions and vomiting. Paramedics arrived at his family's home and Roy was transferred to University Hospital Waterford. He was later transferred to Cork University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next day, 17 August. An autopsy was performed at Cork Hospital. The autopsy report, along with the report requested from the pharmaceutical company, will be part of the information that must be taken into account by the medical examiner appointed by the judicial authority, Philip Comyn.
