In memory of those who 'died suddenly,' in Canada, October 31-November 2
Singer-guitarist John McGale of Québécois rock band Offenbach; voice actor/comedian Jan Rabson; and 372 (!) more across Canada (and that count is incomplete)
CANADA
This week's tally includes reports from last week and the week before, as our lead researcher had a family emergency that set her back. As she's still catching up, she was unable to include a number of this week's reports, which will appear in next week's update.
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some large populations.
Specifically, we have had trouble finding data on the “sudden deaths” of Asians, East Indians and Jews throughout the country (three large minorities), and of the Filipinos in Alberta. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in the Territories—especially about the large indigenous community, whom Trudeau’s police have sought to “vaccinate” by force. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for that community, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden.
What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A fatal “vaxxident”?
Offenbach guitarist John McGale 'brought a sense of melody' to Quebec band
November 2, 2022
Singer-guitarist John McGale, best known for his work with the legendary Québécois rock band Offenbach, died in a car crash in Lacolle near the Quebec-New York border early Sunday morning. The Surété du Québec reported that McGale’s car went off the road on Montée Odellstown in Lacolle at 2:45 a.m. Sunday, hit a tree and caught fire. McGale was stuck in the car and had to be removed with hydraulic cutters. He was taken in critical condition to a nearby hospital, where he died a few hours later. It was his 66th birthday. “We were supposed to have dinner this summer and listen to his new songs,” said Diane Pinet, president and owner of the music publishing company Bloc Notes Music, which represented McGale. “He had many new projects coming. I was in a state of shock when I heard. I’m devastated. My heart is broken. I still can’t get it into my head that he’s no longer with us — that he won’t drop by the office or call me between two shows. My heart is just so heavy.”
Jan Rabson, 69
November 1, 2022
It is with deep sorrow that we share the news that Jan Rabson passed away suddenly due to a massive heart attack on Oct 13th. To describe Jan’s life and legacy is an insurmountable task. He was bigger than life with a laugh that came from the deepest part of his being and became infectious to all hearing it. He was a creative, out-of-the-box thinker and had a brilliant sense of humour. He kept a playful spirit throughout his 68 years of life and a childlike wonderment about virtually everything. He was one of a kind!
Leaving New York in his early 20s, Jan ventured to Los Angeles to pursue his career dream of acting. His dream became a reality. In a career that spanned over four decades, Jan’s face and especially his versatile voice graced literally hundreds of movies, sitcoms, cartoons and video games. Among his treasured accomplishments were working on many animated films for Pixar, Disney, Dream Works, Illumination, Universal, Sony Entertainment and many more spanning three decades. Two of the quirkiest roles of his career were being the voice of “Leisure Suit Larry” as well as the voice of Tetsuo Shima in the 1989 dubbed version of “Akira.” He was a nerd’s superstar! Around 1990, he was invited to join the Might Carson Art Players. According to head writer Andrew Nichols, “Johnny didn’t trust many people to perform in his sketches, but we knew that Jan had the comedy chops required to appear live on stage with a legend and hold his own.”
Jan and his family left Los Angeles in 2002 for a more tranquil life on the shores of his beloved Salt Spring Island in Canada. He loved his island life and sharing in a community of people who had also chosen an unbeaten path. He loved the beauty of living in British Columbia. He truly stopped and smelled the roses daily. In 2007 Jan, Cindy, Adler and Hayden proudly became Canadian citizens. The family also maintained their U.S. citizenship.

Brian Francis, 74
October 27, 2022
Hagersville - Died suddenly at Juravinski Hospital after a short battle with cancer. Although a very private man, Brian loved his walks and impromptu meetings with friends and neighbours. He was kind, gentle, and funny, finding humour in the most unlikeliest of places. Those who knew Brian also respected his quick intelligence and his tenacity. For the last 30 years, Brian worked tirelessly to expose and confront the ways Ontario car accident victims are denied justice by insurers, their “hired gun” medical examination providers, and the lawyers who profit from litigating in a system seemingly designed to benefit all stakeholders except the accident victim. Brian’s extensive knowledge of Ontario’s auto insurance regime, its systemic shortcomings, and some of its shiftier players was the result of personal experience as the partner of an auto insurance victim which launched him into years of dogged research. Brian’s analysis, insights and advocacy efforts were valued by many (and regrettably not so much by others).

A lover of silly cards and bad jokes, Glen was a firm believer in the sage adage “You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can’t pick your friend’s nose.” He was a wonderful, one-of-a-kind, moose of a man who will be greatly missed.

Victor Allen, 74
October 28, 2022
Maple Ridge - Vic died on the evening of Tuesday October 25th, 2022, following an unexpected collapse at home. He passed with loved ones at his side, both present in the hospital, and over the phone. Vic’s great appreciation for music was honoured, as he passed while listening to some of his favourite Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits songs. Vic’s last waking day was spent just as he would have hoped for: walking our dog Watson, chatting with neighbours, and raking leaves in the yard. His death, though difficult for the loved ones he leaves behind, was how he would have wanted to go – sudden and with his full capacities and independence. Though his immediate family was small in number, Vic excelled in collecting cherished friends. Vic had a true sense of adventure. He would reminisce frequently about his time spent doing field work in the Canadian Arctic and on scientific ships, his road trip to Mexico. Our family would like to thank the paramedics and hospital staff at Royal Columbian Hospital.

October 29, 2022
Kelowna - It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Anthony Baldigara after a short yet courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Mike was a kind and gentle soul, with an incredible strength and determination. He loved his family deeply, he cherished his wife, was so very proud of his boys and felt so very fortunate to have lived the life he had. He loved the outdoors, and always felt grateful living in such a beautiful part of the world. He loved music, travel and learning, aways sharing the latest of what he learned on a podcast. As a teen, a teacher encouraged him to run cross country. That sparked a lifetime passion for sport, fitness and nutrition. He inspired many people who knew him, but never as much as when he was sick. He took his chemo drugs in a bottle as he rode his bike, he got up early and hiked mountains to see as many sunrises as he could, he filled his days doing what he loved. Mike was always positive, the glass was always half full. He considered himself a lucky man, even after the diagnosis. Donations to Pancreatic Cancer Canada.

Trudy Collene Spence, 69
October 24, 2022
Regina - It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my dear wife of forty years, Trudy Collene Spence. Trudy left this earth on October 19th, 2022 at the age of 69 years and six months at the Regina General Hospital after undergoing surgery for breast cancer after which she suffered a heart attack and then contracted Covid. Trudy suffered from ill health all of her life due to contracting Diabetes at age 16. She accepted her fate with dignity and grace. In Trudy’s teen years her father bought her a horse which was half Arabian and whom Trudy called Blaze. She loved this horse greatly and mentioned Blaze throughout her life right up until the end. Blaze blessed Trudy with one colt which she named Toffey. Trudy loved all animals and always looked after them. As Trudy was not blessed with children her cats became her kids and she loved them all. Trudy had a bubbly and happy personality and when she would encounter a staff member in the pharmacy or elsewhere who was appearing down she had a way of lifting that person’s spirits and making his or her day a little brighter. That is just who Trudy was. Trudy was a very spiritual person and believed in a higher power and a life after this earthly one.

My gosh that is a long list, and so many young people. Really need that Nuremberg trial to start.
I am so proud of the family of one infant who included a picture. The child was put into some hand crocheted items for the image, and though the skin color is 'off', they look as if they are only sleeping. Brave family, not afraid to show the face of these infant deaths.
