In memory of those who "died suddenly" in Canada, October 24-October 31
TV actor ("X-Files," "Smallville") Michael Kopsa; race car driver Barry Paton ("ambassador of Canadian motorsport"); and 137 more in Canada
CANADA
Due to a crisis in our lead Canadian researcher’s family, this week’s compilation is incomplete. The updated tally will be included in next week’s compilation.
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some large populations.
Specifically, we have had trouble finding data on the “sudden deaths” of Asians, East Indians and Jews throughout the country (three large minorities), and of the Filipinos in Alberta. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in the Territories—especially about the large indigenous community, whom Trudeau’s police have sought to “vaccinate” by force. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for that community, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden.
What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
Michael Kopsa dead at 66: The X-Files and Smallville star passes away as tragic cause of death revealed

‘Ambassador for Canadian motorsport’: drag racing patriarch Barry Paton dead at 78
October 24, 2022
Barry Paton, the patriarch of Canada’s only active Top Fuel dragster team, has died. He was 78. Based in Paris, Ont., Paton and his team were in Dallas, Tex., competing in the NHRA FallNationals when he died unexpectedly. A former military and commercial pilot, Paton had a passion for speed on the ground as well. He began drag racing in 1964 in the Super Stock ranks and climbed into faster race cars with his first Funny Car, an alcohol-powered racer in 1986. With used equipment and a tight budget, Paton was able to make his mark by winning regional titles and becoming the first Canadian to qualify No. 1 in his class at the NHRA Grandnationals in Montreal in 1989. A year later, Paton’s son Todd took over the driving duties and the team became a force on both the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) circuits, and the only Canadian team to win two IHRA World Championships. Another highlight at this time was winning Alcohol Funny Car in the 1999 GatorNats in Florida. “I’ve known Barry Paton for about 50 years,” said Bruce Mehlenbacher, who signed off on Paton’s Alcohol Funny Car licence when Mehlenbacher and his family owned and operated the Cayuga Dragstrip, now part of Toronto Motorsports Park. “He was an ambassador for Canadian motorsport, well respected in the racing community, and waved the flag.”
