Lilly Mbati, a resident of Ekero town in Mumias East, is said to have collapsed on her way to school. She was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.

43-year-old Gombe monarch dies in his sleep

The Emir of Funakaye in Gombe State, Alhaji Mu’azu Muhammad Kwairanga, has died in his sleep. According to sources at the Funakaye Emirate Council, the 43-year-old emir died shortly after retiring to bed, on Saturday, August 27. It was gathered that the monarch had attended the flag-off of the distribution of food items to vylnerable groups by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, on Saturday in Gombe. On Friday, he was at the opening ceremony of the newly constructed Kaltungo Central Mosque in Kaltungo LGA of the state. He also attended the commissioning of the phase I of the newly reconstructed Gombe-Yola Road in Kumo town of Akko LGA of the state. He was said to have held a meeting with officials of Funakaye branch of the Jama’atul Izalatul Bidi’a Wa Ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS) at the palace until Magrib prayer, which he observed in congregation at the palace Mosque. “He later retired to his bed, but around 12 am the sad news was relayed to us about the deceased of the emir,” a palace source stated.
Late Mu’azu Kwairanga Mu’azu was appointed as the third Emir of Funakaye on June 2, 2021, 13 days after the demise of his elder brother, late Abubakar Muhammad Kwairanga. According to Daily Trust, the deceased’s elder brother died suddenly on May 20, 2021, few hours after complaining of illness. Funeral prayers for the decease will take place at his palace by 2:00 pm on Sunday. He is survived by one wife and five children.

Former Security Minister Gen. Elly Tumwine, has died aged 68. bush-war general has been fighting for his life at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he was airlifted two weeks ago. Gen. Tumwine’s health had been a subject of public speculation for a while, even when he was still a Cabinet minister.
Relatives and associates reported that the bush war general collapsed at the marriage ceremony of a prominent female journalist last month, and was later booked at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. His condition, however, worsened prompting referral to Nairobi for more specialised medical care. The ailment hasn’t been publicly disclosed, but the general in the past received treatment at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Mulago Hospital.

Charlbi Dean, a young, up-and-coming South African actor who most recently starred in this year’s Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness,” died Monday in New York from an unexpected illness, Variety has confirmed. She was 32. Dean also appeared in the DC Comics series “Black Lightning” on The CW. She played the highly skilled assassin Syonide throughout nine episodes over two seasons. She made her acting debut in the South African film “Spud” in 2010 and returned in the 2013 sequel “Spud 2: The Madness Continues.”

The Comrades Marathon has been rocked by another tragedy of a participant who died while participating in Sunday's down-run. 47-year-old Phakamile Ntshiza, who ran for the Pretoria-based Adventist Athletic Club, died suddenly while on the course to Durban. He collapsed shortly before reaching Drummond - the half-way point of the race - and was declared dead when the Netcare medical team arrived on the scene.
This follows news earlier in the day that Mzamo Mthembu of the Hollywoodbets Athletics Club died in a Westville hospital on Sunday after collapsing just before Pinetown. Comrades race director Rowyn James confirmed both deaths to Sport24 on Monday. "When our Netcare team had arrived at the scene, the athlete was declared dead," James said of Ntshiza's death. "The chairperson of the Comrades Marathon Association has been in contact with both families. Comrades is a family. We have had over 400,000 people run the race since its inception over 100 years ago, and we are all family. Two deaths are two too many, and our thoughts and condolences are with the families of the runners who lost their lives."
James added that a total of 74 runners had been transported to hospital – 41 to St Augustine's and 33 to Netcare Umhlanga – after Comrades shut its medical facilities at 20:00 on Sunday night. Of those, two remain in ICU presently. One is still on a ventilator.

A baby boy was declared dead Thursday morning, a day after he was rescued from a near-drowning at a pool in Safed. The child, said to be around a year old, was declared dead at Ziv Medical Center in the city. He was brought there Wednesday in critical condition by first responders, who had attempted to revive him after he was pulled out of a pool at a Safed bed and breakfast. Ultra-Orthodox media outlets identified the child as Yonatan Deutch, the son of Yehoshua Deutch, a member of the local council of Kiryat Ye’arim (Telz Stone) outside of Jerusalem, representing the Haredi Degel HaTorah faction.

Lebanese singer George Al Rassi killed in road crash

Well-known Lebanese singer George Al Rassi was killed on Saturday after his car crashed into a road barrier on a highway on the Lebanese-Syrian border, media reports said. The 42-year-old entertainer was coming to Lebanon after performing at a concert in the Syrian capital Damascus, the reports said. A woman who was accompanying Al Rassi in the car was also killed in the accident that occurred in Lebanon’s eastern border region of Bakka, according to Lebanon’s state news agency. Civil defence personnel pulled out the two bodies from the car and transferred them to a government hospital, it added.
The crash happened after the singer had allegedly fallen asleep while at the wheel, resulting in collision into a road barrier, unconfirmed reports said. Media images showed the car badly damaged in the aftermath. The authorities, without identifying the two victims, said they used rescue hydraulic equipment after the car had been heavily damaged.
