CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Dr. Tom Peebles, 48
June 15, 2023
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Tom Peebles on June 7th, 2023, in Victoria BC. Tom was 48 years old and was at a very happy, healthy and hopeful time in his life. He was truly a “Jack of all trades”, and obtained his College of Family Physicians of Canada certification in Emergency Medicine to become one of Grande Prairie’s first certified emergency physicians. He was also trained in minor surgical procedures and, in addition to offering locum services, he offered surgical services in rural Alberta, particularly at the Beaverlodge Hospital. He was head of the emergency department in Grande Prairie for over a decade and was instrumental in planning and developing the new QEII emergency department.

May 31, 2023
Steinbach - In the early hours of May 20, 2023, surrounded by his loving wife and family, Jason Henry Janz passed away at the age of 44 after a brief yet courageous battle with cancer. Jason answered the call to serve the public and joined the Winnipeg Police Service in 2006. His colleagues describe him as kind, generous, selfless and an exceptionally hard worker. He served as a constable until he was promoted to detective sergeant in 2020. Over the years, Jason helped organize the Law Enforcement Torch Run and Polar Plunge, raising funds for Special Olympics Manitoba. Jason loved his job, finding fulfillment in both the challenges it presented and the rewarding experiences it offered. As a member of the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, he developed a passion for scuba diving. On his final family trip to Mexico this past January, Jason swam alongside nurse sharks in open water, quickly becoming one of the most memorable dives in his lifetime. Jason was an exceptional man, husband, father, son, brother and friend. He made the world a better place and he will be deeply missed. Donation to CancerCare Manitoba.
A mountaineer in Alberta “died suddenly"
Reported on June 6:
David Begg, 68
June 6, 2023
A long-time resident of Canmore, David Richard Campbell Begg passed suddenly on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at the age of 68. He lived an outstanding life rich in curiosity, commitment, friendship and adventure. David grew up in New Zealand with his four younger siblings. In 1983, as a newly-minted IFMGA certified mountain guide, David emigrated to Canada, settling initially in Ottawa where he started a mountain instruction and travel business. In 1987, he moved to Canmore, and purchased Yamnuska Mountain School, the draw of the high peaks proving too hard to resist. Under David’s leadership, “Yam” became the leading mountain school and guide service in Canada. Countless people had their first true mountain experience with Yam and with David, forever changing their lives. With Hiroshi Namba, formally of Canmore, David started Yamnuska Mountain Tours, an in-bound hiking and trekking company for guests from Japan that later included trips to Japan for skiing and hiking. They continued to work in the polar regions, splitting their time between their homes in Canmore and NZ. David was taken too soon but lived full and well. He will be deeply missed.

An educator and linguist “died suddenly” in Alberta:
Reported on June 12:
Trenton Cory Fox (Tatâga Thkan Wagichi), 47
June 12, 2023
Words cannot express the heartbreak that we feel for the sudden and unexpected passing of our beloved Trenton Cory Fox. He was only 47 years old, and we are left to wonder why he had to leave us so soon. But like many First Nations people, Trent was not immune to the chronic illnesses that come with intergenerational trauma and passed away at home peacefully in his sleep on June 8, 2023. Trent was a proud 2 Spirited Stoney-Nakoda man that loved his family and community. He got his bachelors’ degree in native studies from Brandon University (1993), masters’ degree in education from Gonzaga University (2014) and was a PhD candidate at the Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary where he studied Stoney history and the Nakoda language. He only had 2 chapters left to write in his doctorate dissertation. But Trent said the best education he received were the stories and teachings shared by Stoney Elders for his dissertation research. Trent put his education to use and built himself an impressive career. He managed various programs at Mini Thni, including Human Resource Development, Wesley Post-Secondary Education, Wesley Peacekeepers and Nakoda Youth Justice where he developed culturally appropriate alternative measures. He was also a contributing writer for the Cochrane Eagle newspaper. Trent established his own business, the Îethka Îabi Institute, an incorporated society with a mission to promote the Îethka language and Stoney cultural teachings. Through the Îethka Îabi Institute, Trent successfully applied for almost half a million dollars in grant funding with which he pursued various Îethka language projects including a 2022 Stoney calendar, a Stoney Elder – Youth mentorship program, a Stoney language conference and an Îethka Îabi dictionary. Stoney people relied on Trent for Îethka pronunciations, meanings, and spellings.

An educator “died suddenly” in Alberta:
Reported on June 21:
Angie Lynn Turk (nee McGillivray), 50
June 21, 2023
Calgary - Despite the promise of a brighter tomorrow, tragedy struck when Angie's life was unexpectedly claimed by an aggressive form of pneumonia at the young age of 50. Her passing left us devastated, as we had witnessed her remarkable resilience and vitality in the final chapter of her life. Angie's dedication to education was boundless. She embraced the power of knowledge and shared her love for learning with others. As an educator, she ignited curiosity, fostered creativity, and made a profound impact on the young minds she nurtured. Her passion for teaching and coaching was a testament to her belief in the transformative power of education, creativity and "disciplined fun" with somehow a touch of entrepreneur spirit. Angie took immense pride in her educational accomplishments. Her dedication and hard work led her to earn a Bachelor of Education, a Bachelor of Music, a Master of Education, and many other certifications for her profession. Angie's passion for music and nurturing young talents led her to serve as the esteemed Director of the Calgary Children's Choir and Mount Royal Children's Choir. Through her guidance, she nurtured young voices - often one on one, instilling in them the love for harmonies, melodies, and the power of music to unite hearts. She was a solo vocalist in many languages. She was a world traveler and loved the five-star experience, but could also hang and volunteer with the families in South Africa, and students in Japan, France, and England. Her family won't forget her laughter on the elephant ride in Thailand.

Winnipeg - Karson Brock Snow, a beautiful and courageous little boy, passed away on May 11, 2023, at the tender age of 2 years and 3 months. He leaves behind a grieving family who will forever cherish his memory. Karson's journey began in Winnipeg, MB, at the HSC Women's Hospital, where he entered this world facing incredible odds. Born with the rare condition known as Pentalogy of Cantrell, Karson's survival at birth was uncertain. However, he defied expectations and embarked on a courageous battle. For 26 days, he fought alongside his twin brother in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Winnipeg, a testament to his strength and determination. Seeking specialized care, Karson spent eight months in Edmonton, AB, undergoing cardiac surgery. The Stollery Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the Stollery Pediatric Cardiology Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) became his extended family. After his time in Edmonton, Karson returned to the Pediatric Special Care Unit (PSCU) in Winnipeg, nearing the day he would finally come home. Circumstances changed when he was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma (Liver Cancer). Despite undergoing surgery and enduring a round of chemotherapy, his young body faced complications from the treatment. An emergency bowel resection became necessary, and it was the vigilance of one of his beloved nurses, Leslie that brought this issue to light. Karson's spirit shone brightly throughout his arduous journey. He was a beacon of happiness, cherishing every moment with an infectious smile. His “spicy”, fierce, and loving attitude touched the lives of all who knew him. Despite his young age, Karson's impact was immeasurable.
