CANADA
Note: Next week’s compilation will include Quebec and more recent obituaries as our research team continues to catch up with the deluge.
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

190 Calgary doctors warn emergency rooms 'collapsing' in open letter
May 24, 2023
A group of nearly 200 Calgary ER doctors is warning, in an open letter to Albertans, that emergency departments are "collapsing" and they're struggling to provide timely and effective care to patients. "Signs of a capacity crisis are everywhere," the letter reads. "The wait time in Calgary's emergency departments has skyrocketed, with patients sometimes waiting up to 15 hours to be seen by a doctor. These patients often become sicker while waiting. We worry about these patients every shift." The 190 doctors involved, who add up to about 75 per cent of those working at Calgary's four adult hospitals, say they're speaking out as independent physicians and not on behalf of Alberta Health Services or the Alberta Medical Association.
"It's so distressing to see patients sick in hallways and in waiting rooms when we want to be providing the care that they need," one of the signatories, ER physician Dr. Katie Lin, said in an interview with CBC News. "We want to be able to provide 24/7 quality care for our fellow Calgarians, our fellow Albertans, and increasingly we're finding ourselves struggling to be able to do so." Lin, who works in the emergency rooms at Foothills Medical Centre and Rockyview General Hospital, said that while the stressors are very different than they were at the height of the pandemic, the pressure remains. According to Lin, patient volumes are still very high and there simply aren't enough beds or staff. That means she's often treating patients in hallways and waiting rooms. "We've all been in the shoes of the physician who is there on a night shift when the waiting room is packed, there's no spaces available, you're critically short-staffed and you're trying to run a resuscitation in a hallway," she said. "We've seen patients deteriorate while they're still waiting to be seen. And we've seen the aftermath that that has on all members of the health-care team."
According to the letter, it is common to have between 40 and 50 people waiting to be seen by a doctor at any given time. "Our emergency departments are collapsing and front-line health-care workers have truly had enough. We cannot bear to watch our patients suffer any longer with no end in sight," the authors warn. Admitted patients can be stuck in the ER waiting for beds on the wards for days, they say, and sections of emergency departments are routinely closed due to staffing shortages. "We are doing our best every day to provide safe, timely, compassionate care to Albertans, and that has been slowly eroding so much that lately it has felt like a landslide," said Dr. Sean Fair, an ER physician at Rockyview and Foothills.
In an interview with CBC News, Fair said he wants Albertans to know this is a "crisis." "Truthfully, we are having patients die in the waiting room again. And this is not something that happened in Calgary for many years, by and large." Alberta Health Services did not respond directly to questions about waiting room deaths. CBC News reached out to the health authority with a number of questions regarding the doctors' concerns but did not receive specific answers to any of them. "We acknowledge the concerns expressed by some of our physicians," a spokesperson said in a statement emailed to CBC News. "AHS has reached out directly and offered to meet."

Gibsons - When Katie fell ill in 2021, she was a fighter. She fought for every ounce of medical care she could have. She never gave up, and even when she was given a reason for her pain, she knew it wasn’t the cause and fought until the true culprit was brought to light. That push, lead to a diagnosis and then a treatment plan and her initial insistence to investigate further gave her another year to live and love. Watching their sons grow, learn new things and develop their own personalities was the best part of their lives. They took many vacations, travelling to Mexico, Cuba, Hawaii all through the USA and even as far as Europe in the Fall of 2022. Travelling was a love they all shared, and wherever they went, as long as they were together, it was home. Her kindhearted nature, sense of humour and caring spirit were always something people just wanted to be around as much as they could.

Virden - She passed away, suddenly, on April 20, 2023, with all of her family by her side. She was involved in her kids and her grandkids lives, every single day. There wasn’t much that mom missed for anyone in her life - unless, of course, she couldn’t hear you…which “selectively” happened sometimes! It will be said, that mom lived for her grandchildren, each and every day. It can also be said that Moms door was always open to anyone, no one was turned away, over the years. If you needed a place to stay, whether it be overnight or for 8 months, you knew you were welcome. And you knew you became part of her family. She was a very giving person, especially to those she loved and cared about.

May 2, 2023
East St. Paul - On March 20, 2023 our dear Brian lost his hard-fought battle with brain cancer. Just a message from Wade: My brother Brian moved away from home more than 40 years ago. Distance kept us from getting really close, but we did keep in touch through phone calls and visits. When he told me that he was moving back to Manitoba about 2 and a half years ago, both of us thought this would be the time for us to reconnect through the things that we enjoyed mutually, curling, fishing, camping, even thought of building a houseboat together. Needless to say, life didn’t turn out like we’d planned. He was diagnosis with glioblastoma, the severest form of brain cancer, with a grim outlook. He underwent surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and then alternative natural treatments. All of this left him pretty depleted physically, but he also found a renewed sense of purpose, believing that what he was going through was going to benefit others, especial kids, with a cure. One friend wrote to him the week before he passed: "Your life's been quite a ride. What you have fought for in the last 2 years has not been in vain. We do not always know what our true purpose really is in this world, our intentions may be noble but we are not always in charge of the end results. There is a higher force who is in control of the outcome. Will always remember you as an adventurous, talented, kind and caring soul.”

Keaton Purdie-Graham, 17
May 11, 2023
Saskatoon - It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Keaton Purdie-Graham. Taken so young, so full of potential, Keaton had insight well beyond his mere 17 years. Keaton was well-read, kind, thoughtful, but weighed down by melancholy and the systemic pain of our society. Difference and uniqueness are too often punished rather than celebrated. We celebrate the life of our lost child. Keaton was a being of wit and intelligence; we will never see the like of again. We are devastated.

Frederick John Slobodzian, 63
May 10, 2023
Melfort - After waging an epic battle against cancer for the past two years, Fred is finally pain-free and at peace. He passed away on May 9, 2023, surrounded by his wife and children. Fred was very involved in both his kids’ and grandkids’ lives. He coached his three children in softball and baseball, celebrating several provincial titles over 35 years. When Fred hung up his coaching hat, he moved to becoming a cheerleader for his grandkids, always offering uniquely unsolicited guidance after a game. He just couldn’t help himself…he considered it his duty! After his second cancer diagnosis, the two of them had recently found and purchased their “hot-rod”, a convertible PT Cruiser which led to many road trips to nowhere for small-town diner lunches and many picnics. It was an all too brief glimpse of what life after retirement would look like and it was so good.
