CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Thomas Michael O’Sullivan, 68
August 25, 2023
Thornhill - After a hard fought battle with cancer, on August 22, 2023, our world dimmed as we said our final goodbyes to our dear father, Thomas Michael O’Sullivan, fondly known to many as “Mike”, but most dearly to us as “Dad”. Our dad was a man of contrasts: stubborn, yet profoundly sweet. He often chose to speak with actions rather than words, and his choices reflected an unwavering desire to live life on his own terms. And live it on his terms, he did—right up to his very last breath. Professionally, Dad thrived as a passionate welder and crane operator, and a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Not just a job, his work was a true calling, and he would often quip that his dream was to never retire.

Carol Harms (nee Proulx), 66
August 25, 2023
Carol had circled Monday July 31, 2023 on the calendar months ago. It was the day I was to receive my results of the twenty rounds of radiation I had been given in March for prostate cancer. The next day we were headed to Manitoba to see Carol’s Mom and siblings. We got the results, Todd 1 – Cancer 0. Carol was in tears, ecstatic, I merely shrugged, thinking how unfair it was that I should be so easily cured while Carol continued to endure cancer’s terrible unrelenting advance with grace, courage, and humour. But off we went to Winnipeg the next day with plans to return the following Monday with radiation treatments for Carol scheduled the same week and more chemo to follow. We were full of hope -- surely there was time, we thought. It may have been Carol’s relief at my cancer news or just that horrible disease having its way, but soon after we left by car for Winnipeg on August 1, Carol began to decline, sleeping much of the way, her bird-like appetite gone. My beloved Carol passed quietly beside me in her bed at home, Sunday morning August 6, 2023, less than a month after her 66th birthday, and ten days short of 6 months since her diagnosis of lung cancer in February 2023. Carol always had my back and never got in the way of whatever silly thing I decided to do, and she left me to carry on. She left a deep impression on so many others as well, even more than I knew.
Connie Corbett Johnson, 70
August 25, 2023
Cochrane - Connie chose to pass peacefully in her home August 18th, 2023, after an admirable battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving husband, her daughter and her son. Connie had a wonderfully unique laugh and loved to let it out (even if her snarky children made a joke at her expense). Little family quirks, or even a mispronounced word, quickly became everlasting inside jokes, triggering big belly laughs at the drop of a hat until the end. A delightful truth in her final words; “We always had humor in this house.” Thank you to Connie’s amazing family, friends and neighbors for your love and support, and thank you to the wonderful professionals of palliative care and MAID for making Connie’s final days comfortable and dignified. Donate to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.

Dennis Royal, 66
September 7, 2023
After a valiant and stoic battle with cancer, at age 66, Dennis joined both his beloved mothers in eternity on September 4, 2023. A trucker by trade and backyard mechanic by hobby, the neighbors liked to challenge Mr. Fix It. He beamed with pride when he discovered he was deemed “Mr. Grass” by the neighbors, due to his weed free, meticulous lawn. But his true love was classic cars, predominantly muscle cars. The roar of the Nova Scotian ocean waves and salt laden air drew him home to his mother, Isabelle and his family and childhood friends in the Annapolis Valley and Cape Breton as often as time permitted, but the phone line was his life-line otherwise. His dream to retire home was stalled by the pandemic and then halted by the sudden disbelief of his diagnosis.

I had a friend die of cancer on Monday. Seven weeks ago he was fine. The cancer he had four years ago came back and finished him extremely quickly.
About half way through I noticed there weren't many babies listed, then suddenly there were many. This list is long, and many cancer deaths noted. Thanks for putting this together week after week. I try to read every entry. Wow. This was a long list for Canada.
