'He was taken from us way too soon': Community remembers 20-year-old Grand Rapids firefighter
August 5, 2022
Grand Rapids, WI – Although he had just turned 20 on April 26, Riley Daniel Ray Huiras had an impact on his community that "went far beyond his 20 years of life." "Once you met him, you didn't forget him," Grand Rapids Police Chief Melvin Pedersen said.
Huiras, the son of Kevin and Tami Huiras, was an Eagle Scout, played the violin and the piano, worked for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters baseball team, volunteered as an auxiliary officer with the Grand Rapids Police Department and was a firefighter with the Grand Rapids Volunteer Fire Department. "His greatest passion is the betterment of others through police work and firefighting," his obituary said.
Huiras died Wednesday from a brain aneurysm.
Huiras went to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville for a year after he graduated from Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids in 2020, according to his obituary. He then transferred to Mid-State Technical College to pursue a career in criminal justice. He also joined the Grand Rapids Police Department's Auxiliary Unit.
Huiras began volunteering for the Grand Rapids Volunteer Fire Department a year ago, Grand Rapids Fire Chief Bob Piatt said. Huiras took classes to be a law enforcement officer during the day and was a firefighter at night. "In June, he took the state certification test and passed his firefighter one, literally a month and a half ago," Piatt said.
"Saturday evening, he was fighting that big fire down in Nekoosa," Piatt said. The fire started in a garage Saturday evening and spread to two homes and a second garage. Multiple departments, including the Grand Rapids Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the scene to assist the Nekoosa Fire Department.
Huiras was on his way back from the fire when a call came in for a crash in Grand Rapids, Piatt said. Huiras and another young member of the department hopped off one emergency vehicle and directly onto another one to go to the crash scene, Piatt said. Huiras went home from the second call and, sometime between 2 and 6 a.m. Sunday, suffered a brain aneurysm. The fire department he had been a part of was called to rush him to the hospital, where he died on Wednesday.
According to his obituary, Huiras was an organ donor and his "loving and caring spirit will continue to live on."
"He was taken from us way too soon," Piatt said.

Ceph Christie, an up-and-coming baseball player and rising senior at Dunbar High School, had just been named the D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association’s high school baseball player of the year and First-Team All-League catcher. He had dreams of making it to the major leagues — he had already committed to play ball at Western Carolina University, said his father, Marlon Christie. But those plans were cut short Friday when his son’s body was pulled from the Potomac River.
Marlon Christie said his family is still trying to understand what happened, but he believes his son was out boating Friday morning. The boat may have drifted away and Ceph tried to swim back to shore but got overtaken by the current, his father said. Shortly after 5:30 a.m. Friday, D.C. fire authorities tweeted that they were conducting a rescue operation in Northwest Washington to look for a person “possibly missing” from a boat in the river. Authorities later wrote that witnesses had reported “seeing someone trying to swim to a loose skiff” and that the person was “not seen again.”
Around 7 a.m., the city’s fire department tweeted the incident had changed from a “rescue to a recovery operation.” D.C. police conducted a dive operation, according to a police report. Police have not released any additional details or answered questions about the incident.

Carey James Corkin, 71
August 11, 2022
Gilford, NH - Cary J. Corkin died suddenly August 8, 2022 after a perfect start of the day: Breakfast at home, a walk with his wife Nancy and dog Parker, a ride on his Honda Ruckus to the Governor’s Island tennis courts, and a tennis lesson on the red clay courts he loved to play on since his early teens. Quite simply, Cary was a wonderful human being…the warmest, sweetest, kindest man we have ever known.
There was nothing Cary liked more than endless activities on Lake Winnipesaukee and in Park City with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends. A typical day could include tennis, pickleball, hiking, paddle boarding, boating, riding motor bikes, jet skis or skiing, followed by Nancy’s delicious slow-cooked food back at the house. A perfect day would end with Dairy Queen; many days did. There could never be too many people around or too much fun to be had.

David Dickinson, 42
August 10, 2022
Idaho Falls, Idaho — David Dickson, a single father of eight children, died unexpectedly following brain surgery. David, 42, was caring for six of the eight kids when the family moved into a new home in Idaho Falls just three weeks ago. "He was driving home from breakfast with his kids and his vision started to go out. He got very sick and thought he had been drugged at the restaurant because he couldn't figure out what was wrong."
A trip to the doctor revealed Dickson had a brain tumor. He went to the University of Utah Hospital and had surgery on June 16 to remove the tumor. It was a success and Dickson woke up singing The Star-Spangled Banner. He had a good prognosis as the doctors removed most of the tumor and were very pleased with the surgery. He was doing great and called his kids.
The next day he got a severe infection in his brain. He lost consciousness as the infection caused swelling and irreparable brain damage. He never woke up again.

Thank you for your time and care in putting these lists together. This is such an important thing you are doing.
Mark I know people say this every week, but this is the most horrific one yet. It keeps getting longer every week, it keeps getting younger every week.
It’s unfathomable seeing how many 45 and younger, teens, young adults, children, how many have been cut down in the prime of their lives by these injections. I can’t believe this isn’t the number one story in the nation.
Truly speaks to the state of this country when our children, family and neighbors are dying in their sleep and we can’t even ask, “why”?
