Stephen S. Thompson, ‘Sitting in Limbo’ Writer, Dies at 56
June 1, 2022
Stephen S. Thompson, writer of BAFTA-winning drama “Sitting In Limbo,” died from cancer on May 26. He was 56.
An acclaimed novelist of Jamaican descent, Thompson’s first novel “Toy Soldiers” was published in 2000. Further novels include “Missing Joe” (2012) and “No More Heroes” (2016).
Thompson wrote feature-length drama “Sitting In Limbo” in response to his brother Anthony Bryan’s fight against deportation amid the Windrush scandal, a British political scandal where many people who had come to the U.K. before 1973 from Caribbean countries were detained and deported. The film, directed by Stella Corradi, produced by Left Bank Pictures and starring Patrick Robinson, was broadcast on BBC One in June 2020, and won the BAFTA for Best Single Drama.
His family said in a statement: “Stephen passed away on Thursday 26th May after a short battle with cancer. He fought hard to beat the odds after being diagnosed just a month earlier, but, ultimately, spent his last few weeks at home, as was his wish, receiving end of life care. Throughout this time, Stephen showed a characteristic determination to live. In the end, however, the rapid progression of the cancer meant his body was unable to match the power of his indomitable mind, and he passed away peacefully surrounded by love. His family, friends and partner are heartbroken at his passing but so incredibly proud of all he achieved, both personally and professionally, during his all too short life.”

Tributes after death of Yorkatt and Eric cartoonist Richard Stansfield
May 31, 2022
Former York Press cartoonist Richard Stansfield - who drew the hugely popular Yorkatt and Eric cartoon - has died at the age of 72. Mr Stansfield passed away suddenly at his home in Welburn following a heart attack on April 28. He left no children of his own. But his brother Paul said he was adored by his sister-in-law Jackie and niece Courtney.
"Jackie always said he was the kindest and very compassionate, and Courtney will always remember his eccentricity and love," Paul said. "I will miss him enormously. He wasn’t just my brother, he was my best friend”.
Press journalist Maxine Gordon added: “Waiting for Richard’s Yorkatt cartoon to arrive was always the highlight of the day. Invariably, the cartoons brought a smile – and even belly laughs. Richard didn’t hold back, and sometimes we had to run the cartoon past our editor to get approval. Yorkatt was a much-loved part of The Press – and is a treasured part of our local history.”

'She fell asleep and didn't wake up': Family's heartache after mum dies suddenly aged 26
May 31, 2022
The partner of a young mum who died suddenly aged just 26 has spoken of the moment he realised something was gravely wrong. Jon Noble, 42, had been driving Nikita Lomax back home from a trip to Wales after the mother-of-one said she wasn't feeling well. She told him she was going to get some sleep and drifted off.
But as they were around 15 miles from Manchester, Jon said he noticed something wasn't right with his girlfriend and the mother of his child, and drove them straight to Manchester Royal Infirmary. Doctors worked on Nikita, also known as Terri, for around 30 minutes before she gave Jon the devastating news that there was nothing more they could do for her.
Her family have been left in complete shock, as the cause of her death still remains unknown. They are still waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination to give them some answers.
Jon described his partner of five years as a "happy" and "great" mother who devoted her life to their 19-month-old daughter Kavana-Rose. Nikita grew up in Wythenshawe and had been living in Bacup in Lancashire with Jon at the time of her death.
He said Nikita had suffered with her mental health following the sudden death of her brother around a decade ago, but had been coping well with her grief in recent years.
She had been referred to hospital some weeks prior to her death after experiencing chest pain and was said to be awaiting some further tests for an 'abnormal blood result'.
Speaking to the M.E.N, Jon said: "She was a brilliant person. She was a very happy and great mother. She was outgoing and always wanted to do stuff."
Donations urged to support family of Llandudno woman who died after suffering stroke
May 31, 2022
A fundraiser has been set up to support the family of a woman from Llandudno who died suddenly in May. Karen Goodhall-Haines died on May 19 aged 47 after suffering a stroke two days earlier, leaving behind her husband, Dean, and her daughter, Khama.
A close friend of Karen, Johanna Valerio-Pop, who lived in the same building as her, has set up the page on the GoFundMe website in the hope that it will offer financial help to her family.
Johanna also hopes the money raised will enable Dean to return to work sooner, having been Karen’s full-time carer prior to her death. Johanna said: “It’s just so tragic, how everything’s happened. They’ve never had any money. Dean had to give up his job during COVID-19 after ‘Kaz’ was ill and in hospital for 10 days, and to look after Khama. With all of her anxieties and COVID, it was just too much for her. She had her struggles with things like cerebral palsy and anxiety.
“They’ve had food parcels sent, and my mum and I have brought them clothes and bedding, because they needed those things. Khama is starting high school in September, and things like getting her school uniform would just take a weight off Dean’s shoulders and make sure that he’s got money just to tie him down until he starts work again.”

A mysterious 50-foot fall on the Appalachian Trail:
Hiker dies after falling 50 feet off popular Appalachian Trail summit, VA officials say
May 31, 2022
A 23-year-old hiker died after he fell 50 feet from McAfee Knob — one of the most photographed places on the Appalachian Trail, Virginia officials say. The hiker, identified as Paul Classen from the Netherlands, fell from the summit early Sunday, May 29, according to a statement from the Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department.
About 30 firefighters and three police officers responded to rescue him, the statement says. Rescuers reached him and rendered aid on scene before carrying him up a steep and rocky trail to reach an all-terrain vehicle at the summit, the statement says. The rescuers got him off the trail by about 9:30 a.m. The vehicle took him to a medical helicopter, which flew him to a regional hospital, where he died later on May 29.
Classen was sitting on the cliff with his feet on a lower rock eating breakfast when he suddenly slumped forward and fell, according to Hillary Taylor, who said she was posting on Facebook on behalf of Classen’s family.
“He was our friend, and the most lively, empathetic, personable, fun and goofy guy you could ever meet,” she wrote. “If you met him on the trail I’m sure you will remember him.”
McAfee Knob is on top of Catawba Mountain, which has an elevation of 3,197 feet, in Virginia’s Blue Ridge and is considered one of the highlights of the Appalachian Trail. The knob is also one of the most popular hikes on the East Coast and offers 270-degree panoramic views of the surrounding valley and mountains, according to Visit Roanoke Virginia.
