Days before Lisa LaFlamme was fired, CTV employees mourned the loss of senior director Allan Myers
August 17, 2022
As controversy erupted this week over the termination of host Lisa LaFlamme’s contract, the CTV newsroom was already rocked by the death of a beloved colleague. On Friday night, journalists working late into the night discovered a post on Facebook that Allan Myers, the beloved 59-year-old senior director of CTV National News, had died. Staffers have been scrambling to confirm the information, and CTV executives emailed Saturday to share the news that family members had confirmed Myers’ death.
“Allan is a wonderful friend and colleague of so many, and Allan and his remarkable work will always be dear to our hearts,” read the statement to the staff of CTV Vice President Michael Melling and Editor-in-Chief David Hughes. Lis Travers, a former CTV executive, stressed that Myers’ death was a separate event from any debates surrounding LaFlamme’s sudden departure, but said it was “two shocks in one week,” which is natural for colleagues make it difficult to deal with.
Myers was found dead at his home, his family learned Wednesday, Travers confirmed. She was a close friend of Myers and kept in touch with Myers’ family. She said family members chose not to share any further information at this time.

Vehicle crashes into wedding party in West Vancouver killing two, injuring 10
August 21, 2022
Police said two people were killed and 10 were injured after a driver accelerated through the front yard of a residence where a wedding was taking place.
B.C.’s Provincial Health Services Authority said 10 people were taken to hospital, with five of them believed to be in stable condition, three in serious condition and two in critical condition. Ms. Palmer added that the male owner of the home where the wedding was taking place was among the injured.
West Vancouver police spokesperson Constable Nicole Braithwaite said the accident happened at around 6:10 p.m. local time on Saturday when the driver of the vehicle was trying to get out of their driveway, which is shared between two homes. “They accelerated, hitting several individuals who were there for a wedding,” Constable Braithwaite said. “It was a very big call and we had approximately 10 ambulances arrive, as well as air ambulance and several West Vancouver Fire and services trucks responding. … As you can imagine, it was a very large scene.”
She added it was too early to tell whether charges would be laid, although she said police would have an update on Monday. The RCMP’s collision reconstruction team has taken over the investigation. Ms. Palmer [a neighbor] said it was clear the woman driving the vehicle, whom she described as “elderly,” had no malicious intent. She said the woman was unable to move or speak when she was removed from her car, which has been described by neighbours as a white SUV.

Obituary: Karen Fullerton-O’Brien lived a life true to her values in everything she did
August 23, 2022
Toronto - Karen Fullerton-O’Brien, the beloved owner of Courage Foods on Kingston Road, is being remembered by her many friends and customers as a woman who was dedicated to serving the needs of the community. She died suddenly on July 7 of an aneurysm at the age of 66. Her death was a shock to all who knew her, and the grief was felt throughout the East Toronto community and beyond.
Her husband and business partner at Courage Foods, Jim O’Brien, said Karen was a person who lived her values in everything she did. “There was a consistency with her. She was the most genuine person you ever met and I know that to be absolutely true,” said Jim. “She lived true to her values. She would never backslide ever. I’ve seen her chase people down the street to give them their nickel change. She had that same commitment in how she loved people,” he said. “There was genius to her. She had an artistic and creative side, and a mathematical and business side together.”

Dr George C Comninel, 70
August 18, 2022
Toronto - Passed away suddenly at his Toronto home in his seventy-first year. George taught briefly at Western, but spent thirty years teaching at York where he also served as the Chair of York’s University Senate and of the Political Science Department. Loved by generations of students, his passion for teaching theory drew many to class after class. An egalitarian, he supervised many students, including those gifted with their own distinct approach to scholarship. The final conversation he had was with the Chair of Social and Political Thought regarding a student. A lively participant in Departmental and Administrative affairs, George stood for what he believed, but never carried a grudge. Perhaps to a fault, he always tipped his hand. George wrote and gave dozens of talks, in ten countries, on the work of Karl Marx and the Marxist tradition. His main achievement in this field was the book Alienation and Emancipation in the Work of Karl Marx.
Beyond his career and intellect, George was a warm person who impressed all who he knew; he held dear friendships reaching back as far as fifty years. He often drove those in need of a lift to Pearson or dropped them right to their door in the pre-subway days at York. With roots in New York City, he was formed by lessons of his blended Greek/Irish families; still, he became more Canadian in the finest sense of that word. In these past two years of retirement, a full professor at last, George loved nothing more than relaxing, reading, musing, talking and writing. We are left heart broken; but remember him thus. George, loving and loved, was a mensch of the highest order.

Gregory “Greg” Nevin Taylor, 72
August 20, 2022,
Sudbury - Suddenly, on August 20, 2022, surrounded by love, Greg passed away due to a heart attack. Greg was a very proud Sudburian who, on top of being a well-known Gemologist, turned a passion for photography into a thriving business, photographing the scenes and landscapes that make Sudbury unique, selling those images locally and internationally. Along with decorating many Sudburians with the finest jewellery, Greg was tasked with photographically documenting landmarks such as the closing of the Sudbury General Hospital and the dumping of slag from the train itself. First and foremost, Greg or GG (Grandpa Greg), as he was known to his grandchildren, loved his wife and family and was especially proud of his children and grandchildren, cheering on all accomplishments. Greg was an extremely well-read man, devouring books on all subjects. He was not often found without a book in hand…and a cup of tea and some sort of snack on the go, which we teased him about. It seems impossible to believe we will never hear “Hi, it’s Dad” again. Greg was an avid outdoorsman, loving nothing more than to be bobbing up and down on the waters of the Bad River or Georgian Bay with Denise, fishing pole in hand, reeling in pickerel. He loved spending time with his wife, enjoying all the things they were both passionate about. Greg was a true partner, father, and friend; he was a good man.

Amazing family memories were made, with children getting married there and having children of their own. Leonard retired from the oilfield in 2019. But, instead of resting on his laurels, he started up his own sawmill and began sawing and selling his custom lumber products. Leonard was always very talented and hardworking, and it wasn’t long before he became very good at sawmill operations. Unfortunately, medical issues plagued Leonard’s efforts during his last few years, making physical exertions hard on him. Leonard, true to form did not let anything get in the way of what he thought he needed to do. He got more oxygen tanks, lost some weight and carried on the heroes journey he was always on. He is survived by his wife, sisters, children and grandchildren.

Is it my imagination, or are these lists getting longer?
And still the once great Toronto Star is trying to say that the idea of deaths being related to the V is a conspiracy theory, or delusion. I guess Nordstar Capital (owner of TorStar) holds a lot of pharmaceutical stock. Now might be a good time to short the stock and let some real journalists (if there are any) investigate the story. Ha ha ha ... I know...I really am delusional.
