Jamie Reid, genius behind Sex Pistols artwork, dies aged 76

Jamie Reid, the legendary artist associated with the Sex Pistols, has passed away at the age of 76. Reid designed the group’s logo and provided the iconic punk graphics for Sex Pistols’ only studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols. Reid became associated with the emerging punk scene in the late 70s when his ransom-note style design was adopted by the Sex Pistols. Prior to this, Reid ran the ‘Suburban Press’, a radical political magazine known for appealing to the non-aligned libertarian left. In 1977, the DIY-graphic designer was tasked with creating the Sex Pistol’s second single, ‘God Save the Queen’. Reid designed the cover based on a traditional photo of the monarch but added controversial symbols which would become synonymous with the punk movement. The artwork for ‘God Save the Queen’ placed at number one in Q magazine’s list of the 100 greatest record covers of all time.

Two Doors Down co-creator Simon Carlyle has died at the age of 47. The comedy writer's passing was confirmed by the BBC, who said they were 'deeply saddened' by the news. Simon wrote Two Doors Down with pal Gregor Sharp as a one-off special in 2013, before it was commissioned for a full series. A seventh series of the Scottish comedy wrapped filming at the end of July, and the show is set to move to BBC One when it hits screens later this year. Jon Petrie, director of comedy commissioning at the BBC, said: 'We are deeply saddened by the news of the death of our friend and colleague Simon Carlyle. Simon was a wonderful comedy talent who, amongst many other credits, co-created and wrote the multi-award-winning series Two Doors Down.’

Wigan - A primary school has announced the sudden death of its headteacher, with tributes flooding in for 'a wonderful teacher and a beautiful soul'. It's understood Helen Smart, head of Worsley Mesnes Community Primary School on Clifton Street, Wigan, was 43. The school posted a statement on its Facebook page on Monday. From Alison Halliwell, chair of governors, it said: "It is with great sadness and regret that I have to announce the sudden death of our beloved headteacher, Mrs Helen Smart. Our heart-felt condolences are sent to Helen’s family at this very difficult time.

Heartbreaking news has hit London as Anthony Heard, the owner of Kupros Dairy, has sadly passed away. The sudden death has shocked the food industry, with reactions flooding in from chefs, restaurateurs and business owners alike. The Heard family have reached out in response, saying "We are overwhelmed already by the love and support we have received as a family and all the wonderful things many many people have said about Anthony." Kupros Dairy is the family run cheesemaker in North London, that was inspired by Heard's Cypriot grandmother, who made a living making bread and cheese in her town of Akanthou, in Cyprus. The dairy, which makes it's products by hand in North London, aims to responsibly turn locally sourced raw milk into British sheep cheese. The results quickly gained a reputation within the food world, with Kupros Dairy halloumi making an appearance on many restaurant menus across London.

Schoolboy, 11, suddenly dies at home sparking police probe

Police have launched an investigation into the death of an 11-year-old boy who died at home. Officers and paramedics rushed to Nelson Street in Burton, Staffordshire, on Friday, but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. Residents reportedly spotted a significant number of emergency service personnel after the alarm was first raised at around 8.40 am. Following his death, the young boy's family is now being supported by specialist officers. Staffordshire Police confirmed that enquiries into the boy's death are ongoing. In a statement, they said: "We were called to Nelson Street in Burton at 8.37am on Friday (August 4), following reports of a medical episode.”

PC Jack Reay, who has been described as a 'ray of sunshine' went into cardiac arrest while on holiday on the Spanish island. The 26-year-old from Uttoxeter had been a police constable for several years, working in the local policing department in Leek.

Golfer dies at Scots club tournament after collapsing on the course

A golfer died during a tournament at an Inverness Golf Club after falling ill on the course. Stevie McIntosh, 55, was playing at the Stewart Taylor Gents Open at Carrbridge Golf Club when he collapsed at around 12.50pm on Saturday. It's understood Stevie, who was the course manager at the Kings Golf Club in Inverness, was taking part in the competition when he took unwell. First aiders who were in attendance called in emergency services, including an air ambulance, but Stevie was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Fun-loving husband taken to his funeral on a double-decker bus after wife wanted to give him ‘one last laugh’

London - A wife organised a unique send-off for her husband after he died suddenly at the age of 69. Jackie Palladino organised her husband a final farewell by transporting him to his funeral on a double-decker bus to give him ‘one last laugh.’ The 73-year-old organised the red London bus after her husband, Simon, died suddenly at the age of 69. Jackie decided he would have to catch a bus to his own funeral and organised for his coffin to arrive at the crematorium on board a double-decker. With the help of Co-Op Funeralcare, Simon was transported to the service in a custom-made original London Transport hearse. Jackie, of Rugby in Warwickshire, said: “Simon always had a brilliant sense of humour. I knew that he would have wanted his funeral to be light-hearted and would have laughed at the thought of being taken to the service on a double-decker. It’s far from traditional and so I worried that it might not be possible.”

Mum, 31, dies suddenly after being told she had anxiety

A mum was described as the "life of the party" by her family after her sudden death. Jade Preston visited her GP when she started to experience chest pains. But being told it was anxiety, no major concerns were raised. However, on July 24, the 31-year-old from Skelmersdale had put her three children to sleep and was in bed herself with her partner James Kinsey when things took a turn. Jade suffered a major heart attack and was rushed to hospital. The 31-year-old was put on life support for seven days, just tragically, doctors told the family her brain had been starved of oxygen for too long and a decision was made to switch it off. Jade died surrounded by her loved ones on August 2. Sister Bethany told the ECHO: "She was a great big sister and a good mum. She was the first born daughter and granddaughter, she was still so young. Jade was my big sister and she was the life of the party." The family were soon told that Jade had an undiagnosed underlying heart disease, which runs in her family, that had been missed.

Stephen Stewart, also known as Bowie, died suddenly in July of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a genetic form of heart disease that can often display few, if any, symptoms and affects around just one in 500 in the UK. The dad-of-two, from Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire, leaves behind two young daughters and his heartbroken family have launched a fundraiser to pay for his headstone, so they can have somewhere to remember him. A tribute posted by Alexander Buchan & Son Funeral Directors on Facebook said Stephen would be "dearly missed and always remembered". It read: "It is with deep sadness, we announce the very sudden and unexpected passing of Stephen (Bowie), aged 38 years on Wednesday July 12, 2023 at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.”

North Sea - Tributes have been paid to a much-loved offshore worker who died on an oil platform in the North Sea. Steven Wright, 45, passed away after becoming unwell on a CNOOC-operated Scott platform, around 115 miles off the coast of Aberdeen. Emergency services rushed to the rig but the dad, from Newcastle, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Energy Voice. The rope access supervisor worked for oilfield services firm Stork, and had been working on the Scott platform in the North Sea. Cops confirmed Steven's family have been informed, and police are looking into the death. A statement from the firm said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm the passing of an employee working offshore on Friday 4th of August, 2023. The individual’s family have been informed and we are supporting them through this difficult time.”

Julian James, 43, was a "strong-willed and loving father, who would do anything for his family" and had finally settled down for family life with his wife Pepsi Monderoy-James, 36, and their children Osiris, 5, and April, 2, as well as Julian's older son Nature, 21, when he died on July 6 after suffering a bleed to the brain and a stroke.

Named on social media as Rob Cowie, the Dons fan was a proud season ticket holder. He had the same seat in the Richard Donald stand for more than 50 years. Following his sudden death, his daughter and family have published a tribute and appeal online to try and get a clap for the lifelong fan at the upcoming Celtic game on Sunday. ‘Hopefully, we get a win for dad on Sunday’. Every game day, Ms Cowie said her dad would visit the Pittodrie Bar on King Street before setting off for the game. In a post on social media, she wrote: “In the evening, he would listen to his radio while reading the red final with a Holsten Pils. His Saturday night mood would depend on whether the Dons won or lost that day.”

Family's anguish as 'amazing' Alfreton dad dies suddenly on holiday in USA

A Derbyshire family has been left heartbroken after a beloved father and grandfather died suddenly while on holiday in the USA. Jerry O'Brien, from Alfreton, was visiting his son Kane in Oklahoma when he collapsed at a water park in Missouri unexpectedly. CPR was administered by those nearby but Mr O'Brien couldn't be saved. The 60-year-old's cause of death is yet to be established following the incident on Sunday, July 30. Family friend Jo Holbrook said: "It was massively sudden. There was no explanation. He was an absolutely amazing man. He'd always have a smile on, no matter what he went through, and he went through a lot, losing his wife, brother, father and uncle in the last four years. He sorted everything out for each of them after they passed, yet he still kept going. He was always there for everybody."

East Anglia - A motorcyclist who died after a collision with a lorry on the A14 last year had a heart condition which meant he was susceptible to sudden death, a court has heard. Maurice Brame, 61, and from Tostock, died on September 21 near the Copdock Interchange after a collision with a Volvo lorry. The driver, 33-year-old Sergejs Baikovs, of Tattersall Road, Boston, denies causing death by dangerous driving at Ipswich Crown Court. Ian Bridge, speaking in defence of Baikovs, told the court that Mr Brame’s body had been examined by two pathologists. Their findings showed he had an undiagnosed cardiovascular condition, which meant that he would have been “susceptible to sudden death at any time”. Data collected from the Volvo lorry’s collision prevention system showed that Mr Brame’s motorbike had slowed from 25mph to 14mph at the moment it was struck, and was being driven in second gear. He said that both he and his fellow expert witness, police collision investigator PC Andrew Fossey, had concluded that the reason for this low speed was “either medical or mechanical”. Mr Webb told the court that no apparent fault with the motorcycle had been found, leading him to believe that reason for Mr Brame to be driving at such a low speed was “more likely a medical issue”.

Scotland - Anthony James Bundy, known as Tony, was out shopping on June 25 this year when he became unwell. He was taken to the A&E department at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and was left to wait in a corridor for five hours before suffering the massive stroke. He was then rushed to the intensive care unit at the city’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but never regained consciousness and died four days later surrounded by his family. Tony was only 53 years old. His loved ones said he had been fit and healthy until a few weeks before his death.

Talented GAA and rugby player dies at age of 15

Co. Laois - Tributes are being paid to a talented rugby and GAA player who died at the age of 15. Ronan McNamara played both GAA and rugby in Co Laois. He played GAA for Stradbally Parish Gaels and was a member of the minor squad. He also played for Portlaoise Rugby Club. Stradbally Parish Gaels, where Ronan was on the minor squad, said he was a special young man. In a Facebook post, the club said: "We lost a very special young man Ronan McNamara who was a member of our minor squad. Only last Sunday Ronan lined out with his teammates and gave his all as he has always done for the team. Ronan was a smashing young man and it was an honour and privilege to have been part of his journey. Rest in peace, Ronan."

All her life, Mary was always a lively and vibrant lady who had a great interest in all things local. She enjoyed nothing more to have a chat. Mary had a gentle nature was a great lover of all animals and in particular cats where her home was adorned with pictures and ornaments of cats. A lifelong supporter of Dublin GAA, she prided herself in flying the Dublin flag for all their games. She would have been especially delighted to have seen Dublin win this year’s All Ireland.
