Efforts to save the Dutch former professional cyclist using CPR proved ineffective in resuscitating him. During his eight-year professional cycling career, Westra competed in the Tour de France five times - finishing the gruelling three-week race on three occasions. The Dutch star had 13 race wins during his short professional career, which included the prestigious Paris-Nice stage race in 2012. Westra also played a key part in the Astana team during the 2014 Tour de France in helping team-mate Vincenzo Nibali to overall victory. His biographer and friend Thomas Sijtsma announced his death tweeting: "Lieuwe Westra (40) passed away on Saturday afternoon. The former cyclist fought with himself in recent years and lost. In the week before Christmas, Doron Hirsch passed away unexpectedly. He turned 42 years old. Hirsch started his career as an artist. On his website he describes his work as the integration of performance and spatial installation. Creating an environment in which one takes a journey to a temporary reality mixed with fantastical elements. It is important that the interaction with his work is not static, but adapts to the world in which it finds itself. In 2018, this journey of discovery led to game design. Under the name Kwa Qua, Hirsch worked on Mish Mash, a game in which players create a work of art together. They do this by embroidering on each other's drawings, without seeing the complete drawing of the others. Hirsch described the project as “a playful creative platform that brings out the values of inclusion, diversity and teamwork. It brings people closer together by making SUPER LARGE surrealistic drawings full of surprising connections.” The game is still in development, but Hirsch has already traveled to events at home and abroad to let players make art together. Last year Mish Mash could be played at Devcom, the Dutch Game Day and the Medialab of the Cinekid Festival. Hirsch worked with another team on Troglodates, a humorous dating sim where the player helps a caveman date in the modern world.

Culture journalist and author Ulrich Weinzierl died

The Viennese author and culture journalist Ulrich Weinzierl is dead. The long-standing culture correspondent for the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" and the "Welt" died yesterday at the age of 68 in his hometown, according to his publishing house Zsolnay. During the course of his career, Weinzierl wrote biographies of Austrian intellectual greats such as Arthur Schnitzler, Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Stefan Zweig. The son of the historian Erika Weinzierl and the physicist Peter Weinzierl was born on March 7, 1954 in Vienna, where he later received his doctorate from the legendary Germanist Wendelin Schmidt-Dengler. He quickly made a name for himself as a prominent commentator on cultural events and was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Literary Criticism in 1990 and the Alfred Kerr Prize in 2001. Most recently he edited a four-volume edition of the works of Hermynia Zur Mühlen.

András Gerő was born in 1952 in Budapest. He studied history and sociology at the Faculty of Humanities of Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest and later worked as an associate professor at the university. In the late 1980s, he studied at the University of Minnesota and was a visiting professor at Utrecht, Amsterdam, the University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University. He worked as a professor at the Central European University from its foundation in 1991 until 2020. He has published more than seventy books, in English and German among others. His most recent book, Liberal perspective, was published in 2022. He has often taken part in public debates and has adopted a liberal position.

The beloved sound designer and editor died suddenly at the age of 43. The film community was shaken by the news of the sudden death of Martin Semenčić, one of the most talented sound designers and editors of the younger generation, whose films were screened and won awards at the Berlinale, Cannes and Rotterdam, and he also worked for HBO. Among the countless awards he has won, even four Golden Arenas in Pula stand out, making him one of the most awarded Croatian sound designers. In Croatian film, he was one of the pioneers of modern sound design, a profession that is characterized by much greater creative freedom and responsibility compared to a classic editor, because it is a person who records, generates, edits, modulates and mixes tones himself in order to create a unique author's sound of a work, rather than relying on raw footage or previously available materials. In this sense, Martin Semenčić was one of the best and most creative authors we were lucky enough to have.

Boris Gruica, famous Dalmatian businessman and bronze medal winner dies suddenly

At the age of 55, Boris Gruica, a well-known Kastelan entrepreneur, great fan of fishing and supporter of sports in the town near Kozjak, died suddenly. In Kaštel Stari, he ran the company "Uni Rent", one of the largest in Dalmatia, which specializes in vehicle rental, tourism and trade, and was also the owner of the company "Vip Cars" through which he was involved in the sale of used vehicles. All his business entities operated in a business building next to the Jadranska magistrala in Kaštel Novi.
For lovers of the sea and hunting for big fish, Gruica is primarily remembered as the captain of the ship "Capo", which won bronze at the World Championship in big game fishing in Costa Rica and thus achieved a historic result for Croatia.

Shocking – 20-year-old footballer from Karditsa suddenly dies after collapsing on the pitch

A 20-year-old football player from Karditsa, central Greece who plays for a local team was rushed to the Karditsa hospital when he collapsed on the football pitch on Sunday noon. According to the report of karditsalive.net, the incident occurred in the first half (started at 12.00) in the village of Mavrommati with the young footballer suddenly collapsing without any contact with another footballer. The bystanders immediately provided him with first aid to revive him, while an ambulance was called to the scene and initially transported him to the hospital Mouzakiou before it was decided to take him to the Karditsa hospital, where the doctors, despite their efforts, were unable to keep him alive.
