CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Notably, Muriel served as a Production Assistant on Danishka Esterhazy's Gothic film, Black Field. Her accomplishments were many and her wisdom and generosity benefited all of us who had the good fortune to know her. For many of her 30-years plus career as a realtor she was a top-selling agent. She retired from real estate to live on her farm in Wheatley and care for our ailing, dear mother. For the last nine years Tina used her impressive business savvy to open Birdy's Fine Casual Dining in Bellville. Birdy’s is now a hugely successful restaurant.

Eastern Passage - It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Joseph Leo Daly, age 72, beloved husband and father. He was a man described by anyone who met him as having the gentlest, kindest soul. He made an impact and touched the lives of everyone he met with his music and friendship. After a brief, but courageous battle with cancer, Gary departed this world on June 13, 2023, with his loving wife of twenty-five years by his side. Gary started his music career when he was a teenager. He was a gifted guitarist and vocalist. His voice would leave you breathless and anyone who played with him knew that it was all about harmony! Over the years he travelled around the country playing in many different bands including Vehicle, Songsmith and Buddy and the Squires. He loved telling stories about his adventures on the road and there were many to tell! Gary’s passing has left a huge void in so many lives that will never be filled. A coach in Nova Scotia “died suddenly”:
Reported on May 23:
Patrick Pazo Rutayisire, 36
May 23, 2023
Patrick Pazo Rutayisire went with his angels on Sunday May 21st 2023 surrounded by beloved community in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. He narrowly survived the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda in which he lost almost the entirety of both paternal and maternal sides of his family. As a boy he dreamt his way from barefoot kicking plastic bag soccer balls to playing for the Rwandan National team, travelling to Europe, and all sides of Africa playing the sport he lived and breathed. Patrick eventually made his way to Antigonish where he became a goalkeeper coach for St. Francis Xavier University’s varsity soccer team. Described as legendary, he will always be remembered for his unique warmups with African flair, his energy, optimism, and great work ethic. Patrick also coached many young goal keepers in northern Nova Scotia, producing numerous talented keepers who excelled in the game. Family of Patrick would like to thank the always supportive VON nurses and staff of Palliative Care, inpatient and outpatient services, nurses in Oncology and Dr. Saliba whom Patrick enjoyed interacting with despite the nightmare of cancer. "We tried/We are trying," Pazo would say. There were so many families and friends that helped, especially with Mike throughout these last 19 months of ups and downs and there isn’t room for all of your names but you know who you are.

May 19, 2023
Winnipeg - We are heartbroken to announce we lost our family member Brent Leask on May 6, 2023. In Brent, we lost a father, son, spouse, beloved family member and friend. In his life, Brent experienced much adversity but faced everything like the O.G he was. When it came to his children, however, there was no softer soul. He had nothing but pure love for his family. He would disappear for a while when his demons were getting the better of him, so his kids would not see him that way. He never wanted to hurt the ones he loved. In contrast to his street cred, if you really knew him you would know his beautiful heart and hear his big jolly laugh; usually when he was sharing a story about one of his own crazy antics. We will miss those stories and boisterous laugh so much.

River Boulanger, 28
May 17, 2023
It is with sadness that we are announcing the passing of our son, River Boulanger. He was 28 years old. He was also a brother, an uncle and had numerous cousins. River was currently attending the Aboriginal Community Campus for academic upgrading. He was tentatively accepted to the Industrial Welding Program for September 2023. He was very happy to be at the Campus and was looking forward to the Program in the fall. River had previously graduated from a Culinary Arts program and had been employed at various restaurants, including Cora’s Restaurant, Famous Dave’s and The Don Restaurant, to name a few. After certain shifts at work, he would come home all greasy and say, “I made over a hundred dishes”. As so many of our young Indigenous people, River struggled with the effects of intergenerational trauma, and the everyday challenges of life that youth face. But we as his parents recall him saying to us numerous times that he was struggling, but he would say, “But I’m praying”. And I would say, “Keep on praying and God will help you”.

And he was loved by many for his willingness to help and most importantly his good work. Nestor had a remarkable character of kindness, tolerance, and generosity. Loving numbers, he began his career as an accountant. His zeal for real estate investment led to the formation of Lavro Properties which he nurtured and grew for decades. He also loved music, particularly playing the accordion. Having a great ear and a facility with the instrument that was uncanny, he would play with ease and enrich all our lives in concerts and for family and friends. Nestor was always ready to help and a ray of light in the Ukrainian community. He generously supported everything Ukrainian; most recently a founding member of CFHU, an organization whose mission it is to develop hockey and youth hockey programs in Ukraine.

Our Mom loved fiercely and unselfishly from her youth in Kenaston and Laird, to summers and winters at Candle Lake, to her recent retirement, and diagnosis. Lori was a natural born caretaker who thought of herself last. Lori took pride in her long and varied nursing career. Lori was everything from an ICU nurse to a nursing educator that went back to school for her Master of Nursing at the age of 50. With each role that she occupied, she lived by the thesis: if you are going to do it, do it right the first time. Lori was simply the best and our family is incomplete without her, but we are blessed that her soul chose ours to share her life with. Our time with you was not enough, Mom, but our love for you is infinite.

John Gibson, 71
May 15, 2023
Moose Jaw - Our much beloved husband, father, papa, and brother, John Gibson passed away on Thursday, May 11th, 2023, at the age of 71 years. John was a prominent small business owner in the city and was known for two local businesses in particular: Western Electric Motor and Challenger Graphics Trophy World. John’s pre-retirement job, which was also his favourite, was with Moose Jaw Express. By virtue of his personality, he excelled in this role because he was able to connect with his beloved community members. Anyone who interacted with John or visited his businesses knew that they would be treated well and with a laugh. John was known for having terrible jokes and whether you got his humour or not, he could always make you laugh. Another community connection that John was so proud of was watching the Warriors play. John has been a season ticket holder for as long as anyone can remember. John was dependable, caring, accountable, and always present. His reliability and kind nature made him such a strength and offered peace of mind to everyone that was around him. May honor John’s memory by donating to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Aileen "Rusty" Garda Dixson, 68
May 15, 2023
Aileen (Rusty) Garda Dixson passed away suddenly on May 11, 2023, in her hometown of Saskatoon. She would have been 69 on May 15. Rusty’s interest in health and fitness bordered on obsession (in the opinion of some!). She became a fitness instructor in 2007. The next phase was becoming certified in Nia dance fitness. She then combined her love of dance and her interest in wellness into a healthy living program she called “Live Well – Dance Well with Rusty”. She became a life coach in 2017 and added that to her repertoire. She led in-person and on-line fitness, coaching and dance classes. During COVID lock-down, her classes created an on-line community of women, a place to dance and share. Rusty was also an avid reader and was a member of the “The Sassy Tomes” book club for over 20 years. She made many close friends there. Rusty was devoted to her family and friends and loved and supported them unconditionally.

Hailey "Bee" Lawson
May 15, 2023
Yorkton - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and untimely passing of Hailey "Bee" Mackenzie Lawson on the afternoon of May 2, 2023. Bee has many friends and family that will miss them deeply. Bee was a unique personality that people couldn’t help but be drawn to. Bee was quirky, funny, a little outrageous, and never hesitated to speak exactly what was on their mind. They were blunt and vulgar, but the most fun to be around in so many ways. It is often those who seem the happiest who are the saddest inside; Bee struggled with depression and mental health for several years and tried to keep going, but Bee just could not handle the pain they felt inside anymore. This world was too harsh a place for a soul so full of life and love.

You should cover the amount of young indigenous people dying in alberta at an alarming rate
Today I helped clean a house where the couple both recently passed...a few months apart. ALS and a stroke.
On the way we drove by a house where man just died at home.. unexpectedly, last night.
The friend I worked with today just had a friend die in NZ. He is getting shellshocked...but no connections to the jabs. Deaths are up 65% in Halifax...apparently. No one seems to know why. I suppose most never will.
