Cleveland, Ohio — An inmate has died after having a medical emergency at the Cuyahoga County Jail. Officials with the city of Cleveland tell 3News that on Tuesday, Sept. 12, corrections and in-house medical staff provided aid to the man while he experienced a medical emergency. After being transported by EMS to MetroHealth Medical Center, the man was admitted to the hospital. As a result of the man's need for medical aid, members of the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department arranged through Cleveland Municipal Court and Cuyahoga County Common Pleas for the man to be released from custody. Officials say that later that day, the inmate, who has since been identified as 53-year-old Elving Lopez of Cleveland, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Lopez's cause of death will be determined by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office.

An asylum-seeker died in immigration custody. His family wants answers
September 8, 2023
More than 2½ months after an asylum-seeker from Nicaragua died in immigration custody, his family say they have more questions than answers about the circumstances surrounding his death. Ernesto Rocha-Cuadra, 42, died June 23 after having spent over a year in the Central Louisiana ICE Processing Center in Jena, Louisiana, as he waited for his immigration case to be reviewed. Notes from ICE’s medical records the family provided to NBC News indicate Rocha-Cuadra was found unresponsive, sitting in a chair. He was placed on oxygen and given naloxone, a medication used to reverse the effects of opioids. The drug is commonly administered in emergency situations when people are unresponsive, regardless of whether they have used drugs. His brother said the coroner told him that an initial drug test was negative. Once Rocha-Cuadra became responsive, he was taken to the emergency room at LaSalle General Hospital and arrived in “stable condition.” Shortly after, he lost consciousness, went into respiratory arrest and then cardiac arrest, which ICE listed as the preliminary cause of death. Resuscitation attempts failed and he was declared dead at 2:59 p.m., according to the notes.
No cause of death reported.

Family speaks after inmate becomes 10th death in custody this year at Fulton County, Georgia
September 7, 2023
Atlanta, GA - The family of a Fulton County Jail inmate who died Sunday is speaking out for the first time — demanding transparency and accountability within Fulton County’s correctional facilities. Shawndre Delmore, 24, was found unresponsive in his cell during a routine check on Aug. 31, according to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. They said staff tried to revive him and when that was unsuccessful, he was taken to the hospital for treatment. Delmore died on Sunday, making him the 10th inmate to die while in custody at the Fulton County Jail this year. In August, the jail reported one inmate death each week. Delmore was booked at the jail on April 1 after he was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary and willful obstruction of law enforcement charges, according to records. He was being held on a $2,500 bond. The family said Fulton County officials told them Delmore died from cardiac arrest, but attorneys claimed he “had no known prior medical conditions. This young man was not convicted of a crime. He was simply being held,” attorneys said. “And even if he were convicted, he would not be convicted to a death sentence.”

Sam Armanino, a former Times-Standard reporter and photographer, dies
September 16, 2023
Sam Armanino, a videographer and former reporter for the Times-Standard, reportedly died Aug. 31 in an incident while mountain biking near Lake Tahoe. He was 28. Armanino worked for the Times-Standard for only about 6 months after graduating from Humboldt State University, from May to November 2017. Armanino took his photography to the “next level,” at the ski resorts, said Houston, an overlap in his passion of outdoor activities and visual arts. Armanino spent his free time playing outdoors, biking and rock climbing, bringing others along. Houston said Armanino took him out climbing for the first time — forcing him to face his fear of heights — and went hiking and river rafting together in Humboldt. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has not confirmed the circumstances of his death because the coroner’s investigation has not been concluded. Armanino reportedly died near the Strawberry area.

Atlantic Beach officials believe man who drowned Saturday in ocean had a medical emergency
September 13, 2023
Atlantic Beach, NC — A 49-year-old non-local man drowned Saturday morning west of the Oceanana Pier in Atlantic Beach. Town Fire Chief Mike Simpson said officials do not believe a rip current was responsible, and believe the man had some kind of medical emergency while trying to retrieve a crab pot. The 911 caller said a man was floating face down in the water. “We arrived on the scene and saw him floating about 50 yards offshore. We deployed two rescue swimmers who brought him in,” Simpson said. “He was not breathing and was pulseless. We began CPR, moved him to an ambulance and transported him to Carteret Health Care.” The man was pronounced dead at the hospital. Simpson said the man was at the beach with his wife, and both were Hispanic, so there was a bit of a language barrier with the wife, who was obviously distraught. In addition, there were very few witnesses, so it was difficult to get good information. But, the chief said, “We believe he went into the water, had some kind of medical emergency, fell down and disappeared under the water.”

An autopsy determined that Schreck died of drowning and heart failure due to atherosclerotic coronary artery disease.

September 16, 2023
Arkansas - A person in Arkansas has died from a rare brain-eating amoeba infection after visiting a splash pad. The Arkansas Department of Health confirmed that the individual died from Naegleria fowleri, which destroys brain tissue and can cause brain swelling and death. An investigation was conducted, which included sending samples from the pool and splash pad to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC confirmed that one splash pad sample sent by the Arkansas Department of Health had viable Naegleria fowleri, and the remaining samples are still pending. I CANNOT stand reading about the deaths of children and young adults. How on God's green earth are people able to ignore this?
This is like a bad dream I can't wake up from. On several levels--the tragic deaths and the denial in the culture. Even if Mark weren't compiling these (and thank you for that, Mark, it is SO important), Everyone knows people who are injured or dying from the shots. A friend recently said that summer used to be the time of weddings, and this past summer was the time of funerals.
