The bowel cancer symptom George Alagiah wished he’d caught earlier
July 23, 2023
BBC presenter George Alagiah has died at the age of 67, after nearly a decade of living with bowel cancer. The newsreader was first diagnosed in 2014. He underwent several rounds of treatment after the cancer returned and spread over the last few years. In a statement, his agent Mary Greenham said: “George fought until the bitter end but sadly that battle ended earlier today. George was deeply loved by everybody who knew him, whether it was a friend, a colleague or a member of the public. He simply was a wonderful human being. My thoughts are with Fran, the boys and his wider family.” Earlier this year, Alagiah opened up about a symptom he wished he had caught earlier: blood in his stools. He was taking part in an NHS campaign to encourage the wider public to take up its bowel cancer screening program. He urged people who have received a free test kit from the health service “not to ignore it” because it “could save your life”. “Had I been screened, I could have been picked up. I would have been screened at least three times and possibly four by the time I was 58 and this would have been caught at the stage of a little polyp: snip, snip,” he said at the time.

July 18, 2023
A 19-month-old girl died from cancer weeks after a doctor misdiagnosed a tumour in her bowel as constipation. The toddler, who has not been named, was seen at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, twice by Dr Abdul Bhutto. On both occasions he prescribed constipation medication, despite the youngster’s mother finding a blood clot in the child’s nappy. The girl was actually suffering from neuroblastoma, a rare cancer that affects babies and children. Nine days after her second visit, she collapsed and was taken to Glasgow for specialist treatment but later died.
Family pays tribute to 'funny, caring, superstar' little girl who died after being diagnosed with a brain tumour
July 21, 2023
The family of a little girl who died after being diagnosed with a serious brain tumour last year have described her as a "funny, caring, sassy superstar." 12-year-old Tiarna Mitchell from Cardiff died on May 27 this year days before her 13th birthday. Last year Tiarna's family told WalesOnline how she had been taken to the doctor after complaining of headaches in early 2022. Her family initially thought her headaches might mean she needed a change in her prescription glasses but after spending weeks in University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff undergoing tests and scans, Tiarna was diagnosed with a brain tumour and was given around 18 months to live. In a heartbreaking tribute this week Tiarna's family said she died on May 27 after battling a diffuse midline glioma, the second most common type of primary high grade brain tumour in children, for 14 months. She had been receiving full-time care at Ty Hafan since October and earlier this year received a visit from staff from notorious 'rude service' restaurant chain Karen's Diner thanks to charity Dreams & Wishes after Tiarna was too ill to travel to their restaurant in Newport.

46-Year-Old Nigerian Dies Suddenly In Scotland
July 22, 2023
Security and health Experts in Glasgow, Scotland, are battling to unravel the mystery surrounding the sudden death of a young Nigerian businessman, John Oguchukwu. John, owner of JP Stores Glasgow, whose 46th birthday anniversary was billed to take place on August 28 this year died in his sleep some hours after he returned from work. Effort by his heart-broken wife, Paulene Oguchukwu, to wake him failed after the deceased did not respond to his usual telephone alarm. She subsequently discovered that her chubby husband was breathless. Amidst the confusion, Paulene alerted John's elder Brother, Uchenna when effort by the Emergency Medical Team in Glasgow yielded no result, having failed to revive him. The wife disclosed that though her husband had appointment to see his medical doctor at day break, he never had any sign of failing health. According to her, John had executed his normal daily activities before he returned early in the morning on that fateful day. An autopsy was conducted on the deceased at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital May 23 2023 but surprisingly, the cause of John's death was uncertain. Certifying this position, Doctor Ming Han Lim, ordered further investigation on John's body fluid, the result of which sources say could be release in six months time.

Three dads “died suddenly”:
Loved dad died suddenly despite 'extremely successful' operation as pneumonia took hold
July 20, 2023
A dad who was rushed to hospital by his family after experiencing a severe headache died five days later after seeming to improve following an operation. Andrew Marr's son Richard became concerned on the morning of Saturday, October 30 in 2021 when his dad went into the downstairs toilet at their home in Morecambe and hadn't come out 20 minutes later. Andrew, who retired the previous year after working at Heysham nuclear power station, said he was feeling sick and had a severe headache. A head CT scan showed a severe subarachnoid haemorrhage; a life-threatening condition of bleeding in the space that surrounds the brain. Doctors at Lancaster contacted the neurosurgical team at the Royal Preston Hospital who said Andrew needed to be transferred there and he was taken in the early hours of the following morning. Neurosurgeons discovered Andrew had an aneurysm which needed to be repaired in order to prevent further bleeding. Two days after Nicholas Park carried out a successful operation to insert coils in the aneurysm - a weakness in a blood vessel which causes bulging. The operation isn't typically carried out at weekends due to the availability of medical teams and in Andrew's case Mr Park felt it was safer to wait until the Monday. A common complication of an aneurysm is vasospasm where the arteries narrow and after Andrew began to show signs of this he underwent a second operation to insert a balloon into the artery to maintain its stability. After this Andrew was transferred to the Critical Care Unit where his condition began to show signs of improvement. Andrew, who was born in Manchester and later moved to Blackpool, had been managing to eat and drink but his family say they noticed he had a swollen abdomen and at times they said they could hear a gurgling coming from his chest. Five days after first going to hospital Andrew was being fed some shepherd's pie when he began to cough violently and vomited a large amount of fluid. His family were called and told to come immediately after doctors were forced to intubate Andrew and suctioned out vomit from his lungs which had caused significant inflammation. Just two hours after being sick Andrew's family were told he was dying. Doctors also told them that "few patients leave critical care alive" and given that there were signs of brain damage it would be kinder to switch off the machines and medications keeping Andrew alive and he passed away.

Dave’s family have been left devastated by his passing. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for his funeral. With the Gulf War veteran’s death being so sudden, not enough funds were set aside – with him being a fit and healthy man before his death.

A bagpiper “died suddenly”:
Donegal bagpiper dies suddenly minutes after competing at a pipe band contest in Co Down
July 23, 2023
Co. Donegal - A leading bagpiper died suddenly on Saturday just minutes after competing at a pipe band contest in Newtownards. Alec Brown, who was in his early 60s, was an instructor at the Raphoe Ulster-Scots pipe band in Donegal, and had been competing with the Colmcille band from Derry at the North Down Championships The band had just finished its competition set and was marching off the main arena to another part of the contest area at Newtownards airfield when he collapsed. He was treated initially by members of the St John Ambulance and soon after by paramedics from the NI Air Ambulance, but passed away at the scene. Mr Brown had travelled to Newtownards on Saturday morning from his home at Árainn Mhór island in Donegal. He is survived by his wife Maria, daughter Teresa and son Callum. The pipe band competition was suspended for a time and the grand finale was cancelled. Alec was a National Executive member of the Irish Pipe Band Association (IPBA) and instructor with Raphoe Ulster Scots.
