In memory of those who “died suddenly” in Canada, September 11-September 18, 2023
In Quebec, ship’s engineer and novelist Marie-Andree Mongeau; in British Columbia, TV/radio broadcaster Kuljeet Kaila (46, C); and 171 more across Canada
CANADA
Note: Obituaries from Ontario will appear in next week’s compilation.
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

An engineer and novelist “died suddenly” in Quebec:
Marie-Andree Mongeau, 64
September 13, 2023
On August 29, 2023, in Rimouski, Marie-Andrée Mongeau died at the age of 64. She was the daughter of the late Jean-Guy Mongeau and the late Denise Bouvet of Repentigny. Suffering from a devastating brain cancer, Marie-Andrée left us after a few weeks of a fight waged with the courage and determination that we always knew she had. Like her grandfather, Captain Marcellin Mongeau, and her father Jean-Guy, she was passionate about the maritime world. Following her studies at the IMQ (Maritime Institute of Quebec), she obtained a certificate as a combined diesel and steam chief engineer. This title made her the first woman in Canada to be awarded such a patent. After spending a few years at sea, notably as chief engineer on large merchant ships, she subsequently shared her time between teaching at the IMQ and navigation until her retirement.
Alongside all her commitments, she has always nurtured a passion for writing. She leaves behind several novels, most of them autobiographical, which will perpetuate her memory over time.

Kaila has been a fixture on local radio and TV for the past two decades, working at News 1130, Shush Datt’s Sp!ce Radio, CTV Vancouver and, most recently, at CBC Vancouver. She died Sunday. In a statement provided to Kaila’s friend and former CTV Vancouver colleague Keri Adams, her family shared the news of the death of their beloved sister, daughter and aunt. “She valiantly battled brain cancer with astonishing strength, grace, and resilience until her very last moments, leaving us all deeply shaken by the abruptness of her departure,” it said.

Note: Kaila was especially anxious to get the “vaccine” in March…so much that she indicated if they would just send it to her she would inject herself with it in March 2021. Just over two years later she has died of cancer.
Asked vaccine booking agent for more info, got put on hold and eventually call dropped 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ just send the vaccine - we will inject ourselves!

August 30, 2023
Medicine Hat - With love and admiration, we celebrate the incredible Lyndell Brekko (nee Kurtz). Her sudden passing at home on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at the age of 74 years, marked the end of her physical life, but her memory continues to inspire and lead us. Suffering many challenges over the years, battling the countless symptoms of MS and re-occurring cancer, she proved herself a warrior. Lyndell’s strength carried us through and her contagious laughter could make us forget her enormous obstacles. She had a love for life and those around her which kept her travelling, seeking adventure, and enjoying each day as it came. She was an astonishing figure; a bright light, providing warmth and happiness to all those around her. She had a fierce joy and a wicked sense of humor.

John Miller Stewart, 75
August 30, 2023
Westlock - It is with deep sadness that the family of John Miller Stewart announces his passing on August 29, 2023, peacefully at home, with his beloved wife and his children at his side. His cancer diagnosis in 2021 tested their strength and shortened their time together, but their love never faltered. John was a remarkable man, funny, kind, quick-witted and fastidious. His garage is a monument to organization and order. He was Scottish through and through, with all the stubbornness, tenacity, and loyalty you would expect from a Highland lad. He will be especially missed by his puppy Scottie, who stayed by his side through his darkest days and nuzzled him in his final hours. He fought to stay as long as he could, and our lives will never be the same without him. Donations in his memory can be made to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Canada or the Canadian Cancer Association.

Thankfully he did leave this world with a wonderful son, Jerome, who was the biggest love of his life and his greatest accomplishment. Such a successful genocide, I must regrettably admit. When I say the words, most peoples eyes go a bit blank....like part of their mind knows it's accurate, and another part of their mind cannot fathom it....
I anticipate the numbers of people dying "suddenly" will jump significantly as we enter "party and stress" season - with Christmas and New Years fast approaching. There will be the annual rise in illnesses in youth and adults immediately after Halloween (the intake of excess sugar can be directly linked to the sickness that follows in November) and then we hit the over-indulgence / over-imbibing season for adults. The added stress of rising interest rates impacting mortgages, food & fuel prices, means that people will experience much greater stress - leading to illness and suicides.
