In memory of those who “died suddenly” in Canada, February 13 - February 20, 2023
Manitoba physicist Peter Wilson Zetner; B.C. rock drummer Lyle Andrew Shepard; firefighter James Spencer Evans; and 96 more across Canada
CANADA
Note: Reports from Ontario and Quebec will be in next week’s compilation.
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A physicist “died suddenly”:
Dr. Peter Wilfred Zetner, 66
February 10, 2023
Winnipeg, Manitoba - With profound sorrow, we announce the death of our beloved husband, father and brother, Peter Zetner. Surrounded by love, Peter left the earth far too soon after a valiant battle with sepsis. Following a lifelong passion for physics, he pursued his B.Sc. and M.Sc. at the University of Windsor while working as a janitor at N & D Supermarket of which he had such fond memories. After a brief stint at the Ford Motor Company in the engineering office, he returned to the university to attain his Ph.D. in the field of atomic physics. He completed a three-year post-doctoral term at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, earning him the moniker of “rocket scientist”. In 1989, he returned to Canada for a tenure-track position in the Department of Physics at the University of Manitoba. Peter was a well-respected figure at scientific conferences, presenting finely crafted and enthusiastically delivered research talks. He served as chair of the Division of Atomic and Molecular Physics for the Canadian Association of Physicists. Far from a one-dimensional physicist, Peter was not only brilliant but outrageously funny and creative, with an artist’s soul. He had a passion for photography and won awards for his images. Peter also loved cooking, exercising, reading, and music. After his retirement from the U of M in 2016, he returned to another of his childhood passions, astronomy. He built several spectrohelioscopes and joined the online community of amateur solar astronomers. His posts were expertly written and led to him contributing chapters to a book on solar astronomy. So many projects are left unfinished…
A rock drummer “died suddenly”:
Lyle Andrew Shepard, 68
February 16, 2023
Kamloops, B.C. - The family of Lyle Andrew Shepard sadly regret to announce his passing on February 11, 2023, at the age of 68 years, surrounded by loved ones. Lyle, our dearly beloved brother, brother-in-law, and uncle, passed away after a very brief but courageous battle with ALS. Lyle was the most generous, considerate, loving son, brother and uncle anyone could ever wish for. He wouldn’t hesitate to drop everything to help a friend or family member. He lived for music, from the time he picked up a cornet at 8 years old, and then his first set of drumsticks as a young teen. He never looked back after acquiring his first set of drums. He played in England, the US, and Canada. His first serious gig was with the Great Canadian River Race in Naramata, starting when he was only 15 years old. Over the years he played with well-known bands like Paul Revere and the Raiders, the Jerry Doucette band, many other groups in the Vancouver area, as well as numerous Kamloops bands like Paisley Groove, of which he was a founding member. He also played with locals such as Henry Small, The Intruders, and The Promise, to name a few. Lyle had so many friends, especially within the music scene. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at Ridgeview Lodge, Vernon Jubilee Hospital and Kelowna General Hospital for their kindness and care during Lyle’s brief illness. Donations to ALS Society of BC, in Lyle’s name.

He was community minded and was a volunteer firefighter with the Vavenby Fire Department. He also volunteered at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store. February 17, 2023
Quesnel - He loved science fiction and outer space. He could chat it up with anyone, and he loved helping people. We lost him far too young, at age 60. Tim had many interests, hobbies, and skills. He was truly a jack of all trades - and a master of quite a few! He was a mechanic, a pilot, and a motorcycle racer, and could fix pretty much anything. He loved anything to do with machinery and heavy equipment - he was a self-proclaimed “tractor addict.” He also had an amazing partner, who became an angel for both him and the family when he was diagnosed with cancer. He will be deeply missed and always loved.

Keltie Anne Louise Donnellan, 66
February 14, 2023
Kentville - Keltie Donnellan, 66, of Port Williams, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2023 after a valiant battle with cancer. The most important thing in Keltie's life was her faith and relationship with God. She was a licensed minister with the United Pentecostal Church. In 2004, Bishop Glen Donnellan and Keltie started New Life Ministries, which is still active today. She was also very active in the Nova Scotia district with supporting ladies Ministries. Keltie's spirit transcended all areas of her life. Her long and steadied nursing career was a true passion. For her, nursing was a calling, an artform that allowed the individual she cared for to maintain their sense of self, dignity and their own uniqueness - she was the nurse you wanted. Yet, she was much more than a good nurse, she was an educator, a leader and a mentor for all. She was humble, she did not speak about the awards or accolades that were showered upon her and hence we will not mention them here. She quietly and with dignity carried herself in such a professional manner that sometimes you never realized what you just learned until after she left your side. Perhaps her greatest legacy, other than her family, is the mark she has left on her second home and love, Inpatient Psychiatry at Valley Regional Hospital. From her improvements to patient care, through best practices for treatment and policy making, or setting up safety and educational programs that took place over the years. But, beyond all this Keltie's greatest accomplishment is the league of better nurses she has left behind to carry on her teachings. She was dedicated beyond belief, and we are forever touched by our angel on earth, and now in heaven.

You could always find him in a field somewhere picking blueberries, deer hunting, and clamming was definitely a favourite of his. He sure loved his fishing and lobstering as well. When a new duck hunting season came along he would always be found with friends.
