CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Family wonders if a quicker cancer diagnosis could have saved Thunder Bay, Ont., woman's life. It took 15 months and 6 biopsies before Heidi Smith was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma
September 25, 2023
A nurse in Thunder Bay, Ont., is seeking answers about why her mother — who died last year — couldn't get an appointment with a blood-disease specialist until she received a cancer diagnosis, and is pushing for changes that would let some patients see one sooner. Heidi Smith died in August 2022 at age 63 of Stage 4 peripheral T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer, said her daughter, Mariah Mrakic-TenHave. Smith, who was already a breast cancer survivor, received a number of diagnostic tests over 15 months at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). They included blood tests, MRIs, needle nose aspirations and other biopsies — but the results kept coming back inconclusive. Despite her declining health, Smith was not allowed to see a hematologist in Thunder Bay without a cancer diagnosis. Mrakic-TenHave said her mother underwent testing for more than a year in Thunder Bay. After that, Mrakic-TenHave contacted a surgeon in Toronto who had treated her mother's breast cancer 10 years earlier. Three weeks later, Smith had a sixth biopsy, which finally resulted in a cancer diagnosis, followed by chemotherapy in Toronto over the next five months. She returned to Thunder Bay to complete her treatment closer to home, but died during a COVID-19 outbreak at the hospital. Her autopsy lists the cause of death as refractory lymphoma — meaning the lymphoma did not properly respond to treatment. "They say an early diagnosis is key for fighting cancer or fighting any illness," Mrakic-TenHave said. "There needs to be a limit. You can't just keep testing somebody. My mom told me at the end, she didn't feel human anymore." Before getting sick, Smith was always outdoors, walking her dog, Bear, nearly 10 kilometres a day. While her mother was receiving cancer treatment in Toronto, Mrakic-TenHave visited whenever she could, which meant leaving behind her two children, both under four years old. "It was heartbreaking, it really was. I'm not going to sugarcoat it," she said. She now wonders whether the outcome would have been different if her mother had seen a hematologist in Thunder Bay and received a quicker diagnosis. Smith's first brush with cancer was in early 2012. She had bilateral mastectomies and reconstructive surgery, and was given a clean bill of health. Smith's diagnosis was less common.

However, his family would like to clarify that he passed peacefully, albeit unexpectedly, with his favorite girls, family, and best friend by his side. The real twist in his tale began when he met the love of his life who helped him to channel his unrelenting work ethic into achieving his dreams of establishing the family business "Vikings With Manners," and acquiring a treasured property in Riondel, British Columbia, where he created lasting memories with his loved ones. Evelyn Lucille Adam, 7 months
September 14, 2023
Camrose - Evelyn’s life was little in time but big in wonder. And while she was small in form (she was less than first percentile in weight until she was six months old!), her massive joy more than compensated. She was cooing and smiling at the seahorse hanging from her hospital mobile at a mere five weeks old. To everyone’s joy, she achieved all her milestones on time despite having DiGeorge Syndrome and spending the first six weeks of her life recovering from heart surgery. Concerns of a weak immunity were eased after regular checkups with the doctor showed, outside of a heart defect, a perfectly healthy baby. As her spirit waxed, the effects of her first heart surgery waned, and the time came for a total repair of her heart defect. The surgery was a success and the doctors expected a full recovery. But people do not know what God knows: Evelyn’s time here was complete; He had loaned her to us as a gift for a time, and that time was now at an end. Three days after her second surgery, Evelyn was free to express the fullness of her joy in the loving arms of her heavenly Father.

His favorite thing to do was playing hockey with his buddies. He also enjoyed playing baseball and being part of a team. Connor loved to play the accordion with his accordion group and we will always cherish those memories. Sharing his father’s love of airplanes, he had aspired to be a helicopter pilot and, eventually, an astronaut. Although only 14 at the time of his death, Connor positively impacted many people in his short lifetime. Those who had the privilege of knowing Connor, even just a little, have lost a shining light in their lives.
