Albert Woodfox, Angola 3 member, ‘Solitary’ author, dies at 75
August 4, 2022
Albert Woodfox, the prison activist and member of the Angola 3 whose memoir “Solitary” was a finalist for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, died Thursday (Aug. 4) at Ochsner Baptist Hospital after contracting the COVID-19 virus. He was 75. The death was confirmed by his brother.
Woodfox, who was released six years ago, spent nearly 44 years in solitary confinement at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, much of it based on a dubious conviction in the death of a prison guard. Woodfox’s time in solitary is said to be the longest span endured by anyone on Earth.
For years, even while he lived in his 6-foot-by-9-foot cell, under lockdown 23 hours a day, Woodfox worked to ensure that no one else would suffer the same fate. . . .
As coronavirus lockdowns began, Norris Henderson [founder of the group VOTE, Vote Of The Experienced] and Woodfox shared a laugh about people’s complaints about stay-at-home orders. “That’s all we knew,” said Henderson. “Solitude breeds thinkers. Because you’re always reading. I probably read over 1,000 books.”
A dog named Hobo showed up at their door and wouldn’t leave. So, all through the pandemic, he and George and Hobo regularly walked along the levee near their home, getting fresh air and exercise while always staying socially distanced, because he knew he was at risk. Then, in recent weeks, despite being vaccinated and boosted, Woodfox contracted COVID. As he knew it might, the virus hit him hard.
He got fluid in his lungs. It cleared up with medicine, but that aggravated his heart. Once his heart seemed better, his kidney function dwindled. Scans showed that he had developed blood clots and had begun suffering strokes. “All of that Angola-imposed abuse to his body, it came back,” Kendall said [George Kendall, director of the public service initiative for the New York law firm Squire Patton Boggs].
[Woodfox’s sister Violetta] Mable, 65, sat next to him for his final weeks. “I told him that I was here, I was present, that I know you’re feeling my spirit, that I would love to see you open your eyes,” said Mable, who said that Woodfox, 10 years his elder, had acted as both his father figure and his brother, even as they were raised in a two-room apartment on North Villere Street in Tremé with an outhouse in the back.
Rideau wondered aloud about what conclusions we should reach about Woodfox’s life. “The story ends how?” he asked. When people suffer that much, is it a happy ending? He did triumph over the conditions he faced in life. And he did it in style. In a positive way that impacted the use of solitary confinement.”
For Rideau, the final verdict must be positive, because Woodfox also “transformed from a street criminal to a person of stature.” Through his struggles, Rideau said, he became an agent of change, a reformer and someone who made you look differently at someone who had made mistakes.
“Ultimately, Albert Woodfox’s life makes you realize that you shouldn’t be too fast to judge somebody. He represents hope, the power of human potential,” Rideau said.

Police Radically Change Official Account of Crash Killing Rep. Walorski After New Evidence Surfaces
August 4, 2022
Police have changed their description of the crash that killed Indiana Republican U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski, saying Thursday that it was the SUV in which she was a passenger that crossed a state highway’s centerline and caused the head-on collision. Walorski and two members of her congressional staff died in the Wednesday afternoon crash in northern Indiana, along with the woman driving the other vehicle, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office said.
The department’s initial account was that the car driven by Edith Schmucker, 56, Nappanee, Indiana, crossed into the SUV’s path. However, the office released a statement Thursday saying investigators had talked with witnesses and viewed video evidence that their preliminary determination of which direction the vehicles were traveling was incorrect.
Investigators determined that the SUV driven by Zachery Potts, 27, of Mishawaka, Indiana, crossed the centerline for unknown reasons in a rural area near the town of Wakarusa. Potts was Walorski’s district director and the Republican chairman for northern Indiana’s St. Joseph County.

Cops identify the nurse who allegedly blew through intersection at 100 MPH, killing 6 in fiery crash
August 6, 2022
California Highway Patrol (CHP) has identified the driver of the Mercedes-Benz that blew through a red light in West Los Angeles on Thursday and caused a multi-vehicle crash that left six people dead as a nurse who was speeding through the 35 mph zone at 100 miles per hour. Nicole Lorraine Linton, 37, suffered moderate injuries [later updated to “serous” injuries] in the collision that sparked an explosive fireball and killed, among others, a pregnant woman and her unborn baby.
As American Wire reported, Linton’s Mercedes flew through an intersection in the area of Windsor Hills and slammed into an SUV which burst into flames just feet away from a string of gas station fuel pumps. The mass of fiery wreckage hit several other vehicles before finally coming to a stop. The entire horrific incident was captured on a surveillance camera.
Linton was taken into custody on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. Speaking with the Associated Press, Officer Franco Pepi said detectives are in the process of determining whether Linton was under the influence of drugs or alcohol or if she was suffering from a medical episode at the time of the accident. Prosecutors may receive the case as early as Monday. They will then decide whether criminal charges against Linton, a traveling nurse at Kaiser Permanente’s West Los Angeles Medical Center, are warranted.

Glendale family remembers football player who unexpectedly passed away in his sleep
August 7, 2022
Glendale, AZ - A West Valley football community is reeling after losing one of their own just days before the start of the school year. However, he unexpectedly passed away in his sleep earlier this week.
But earlier this week, when Vazquez went to bed, he never woke up. “We started moving him, and shaking him. We saw he was purple so we called the ambulance,” Gil said. “And when they came they said he was dead, and that they couldn’t do anything else.”
Vazquez had no history of any serious health issues. He didn’t do drugs. As a result, his death has left his family with plenty of questions. “We just have no clue what happened.” Gil said.

Remembering Artist Alberto Gaitán, 67
August 5, 2022
Washington, D.C. - In late July, as word began spreading across the internet that well-known D.C. artist, electronic composer, and art-community superconductor, Alberto Gaitán, had suddenly died, the emotional floodgates quickly opened. Touching tributes, personal reminiscences, and praise for his diverse and impressive body of work began flowing across the data nodes of the global network that he both embraced in his work and cautioned against. Much of the outpouring came from the D.C.-area arts community where, for some 40 years, Gaitán had been a leading light, contributing solo and collaborative work to countless galleries, museums, and public arts projects. His work also appeared internationally, in France, Germany, and elsewhere.
For several years, Gaitán’s Facebook page has listed him as a retired artist. He came out of that retirement in 2021, to be part of the Union collaborative art show at Otis Street Arts Project in Mount Rainier. Alberto Gaitán died of natural causes in his Arlington condo. Date and time of passing are so far unknown.

A judge and a lawyer “died suddenly”:
Body of Arkansas judge recovered from bottom of lake during family trip
August 8, 2022
The body of Arkansas County Northern District Judge Jeremiah T. Bueker was recovered early Sunday from the bottom of Mud Lake in Jefferson County, sheriff officials said in a statement. He was 48. The judge was spending time with several relatives and friends during a “recreational” outing over the weekend when he ventured off alone, authorities said. “After time had passed and no one had seen or heard from Bueker, worry began to set in,” sheriff officials said Sunday.
Bueker was last seen near Mud Lake, which dumps into the Arkansas River just north of Reydell. The judge’s family then called 911 after they couldn’t find him on Saturday. Jefferson County deputies launched extensive ground and water searches for Bueker that were later suspended due to low visibility. Mud Lake was then scoured just after sunrise Sunday and a sonar detected the judge’s body at the bottom, authorities said.
“Deputies utilized subsurface body recovery drag/rescue hooks to recover Bueker’s body,” authorities said. “Upon recovery of the body, deputies and investigators with the assistance of family positively identified the body as that of Bueker.” Bueker’s death is being probed as an accidental drowning, but his body is being sent to a state medical examiner for an autopsy, authorities said.
Sheriff Lafayette Woods said he hoped the recovery of Bueker’s body provides “some sense of closure” to his family and loved ones. “The scour of emotions they must feel right now is devastating,” Woods said.
Stuttgart Mayor Norma Strabala, meanwhile, said she was “shocked and heartbroken” by Bueker’s sudden death. “Jeremy was an important and special person in this community, serving as a good friend, fierce attorney, and as Arkansas County Northern District Court Judge for nearly a decade,” Strabala wrote on Facebook. “I am praying for Sunny, his family and this community as we mourn this tragic loss.”
Bueker, who was elected as a district judge in 2012, was an “avid outdoorsman” and a “very proud father,” a Stuttgart city official told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. He was last seen alive late Saturday, authorities told the outlet.

‘Sending drivers out to die’: UPS workers demand heat safety amid record temps
July 31, 2022
Matthew Moczygemba knew something was wrong when he lost his thirst. It was midafternoon on a 103-degree day in Fort Worth, Texas, and the UPS driver had been delivering packages for several hours. Soon he felt dizzy, then he pulled his truck over and vomited onto the curb. “I stopped sweating and was starting to get cold,” said Moczygemba, 35, who has worked for UPS for five years. “It was a bad feeling.”
Moczygemba wound up at a hospital emergency room, where doctors diagnosed him with dehydration and heat exhaustion, and gave him several bags of IV fluid, according to medical records. He was released a few hours later, but he has not returned to work in the nearly three weeks since. “I’m nervous about going back,” Moczygemba said.
With heat waves rolling out across the country, and states like Texas and Oklahoma experiencing record hot summers, workers exposed to the elements are increasingly struggling under the heat. More than a dozen UPS employees and union leaders say this year more workers seem to be getting sick and have been hospitalized because of the heat than ever before. In response, they are demanding that the company put more safety measures in place.
“Left and right people are falling out,” said Jeff Schenfeld, a union steward in Dallas and UPS veteran of 25 years. “Something is different this year. It’s a lot more people."

Athens, Ga. — Lars Tate, part of a long line of Georgia running back greats who went on to play three seasons in the NFL with Tampa Bay and Chicago, has died, the school announced Tuesday. He was 56. Tate died late Monday in St. Petersburg, Florida, about a month after being diagnosed with throat cancer, his son, Donavan Tate, told the Athens Benner-Herald.
Tate led the Bulldogs in rushing in 1986 and '87, finishing his college career with 3,107 yards — the sixth-most in school history. Herschel Walker and Nick Chubb were the only Georgia backs with more carries than Tate’s 615 from 1984-87.
Donavan Tate said his father was set to begin chemotherapy this week. “It was kind of sudden,” Tate told the Banner-Herald. “You just thought cancer was the next thing that he was going to overcome. Even in conversations with him, he was in good spirits.”
