Gambia’s vice president Badara Alieu Joof dies in India

Gambia’s Vice-President Badara Alieu Joof has died of illness in India, President Adama Barrow said on Tuesday. Barrow said on Twitter that Joof had died “after a short illness” without providing further detail. Joof, 65, was appointed vice president of the West African country in 2022. He had previously served as education minister. The vice president had left the Gambia about three weeks ago to seek medical treatment. Mr Barrow picked him as vice president after being re-elected in December 2021 for a second term. In June, Mr Joof expressed dissatisfaction about the conduct of public affairs, saying Gambians had great expectations and "business as usual" would not lead to decisive change, our reporter adds.

Tributes flooded social media on Friday, January 20 after Gabon’s foreign minister Michael Moussa Adamo died suddenly after suffering a reported heart attack during a cabinet meeting. The 62-year-old reportedly “down at the start of the cabinet meeting and began to feel unwell,” the source revealed. He was rushed to a military hospital around midday. However, “despite efforts by specialists”, the minister died while unconscious. Moussa Adamo served as Gabon’s ambassador to the United States for a decade and also served as special advisor to Gabon President Ali Bongo Ondimba.
