Barbara Ehrenreich, 'Nickel and Dimed' author and activist, dies at 81
September 2, 2022
Barbara Ehrenreich, the muckraking author, activist and journalist who in such notable works as “Nickel and Dimed” and “Bait and Switch” challenged conventional thinking about class, religion and the very idea of an American dream, has died at age 81. Ehrenreich died Thursday morning in Alexandria, Virginia, according to her son, the author and journalist Ben Ehrenreich. She had recently suffered a stroke. “She was, she made clear, ready to go,” Ben Ehrenreich tweeted Friday. “She was never much for thoughts and prayers, but you can honor her memory by loving one another, and by fighting like hell.”
Barbara Ehrenreich was a Montana native, raised in a union household where family rules included “never cross a picket line and never vote Republican.”
A prolific author who regularly turned out books and newspaper and magazine articles, she was a longtime proponent of liberal causes from economic equality to abortion rights. For “Nickel and Dimed,” one of her best known books, she worked in minimum wage jobs so she could learn firsthand the struggles of the working poor, whom she called “the major philanthropists of our society.”
“They neglect their own children so that the children of others will be cared for; they live in substandard housing so that other homes will be shiny and perfect; they endure privation so that inflation will be low and stock prices high,” she wrote. “To be a member of the working poor is to be an anonymous donor, a nameless benefactor, to everyone.”

25 people have drowned in New York State this summer (an article that doesn’t mention “vaccination”):
'Wake-up call': Drownings surge in New York
September 11, 2022
Stillwater — A helicopter hung low over Saratoga Lake on Sept. 1 as onlookers strained their eyes toward dark, choppy water. Yet the hope at Brown’s Beach dissolved into despair after the aircraft lifted up, twirled around and landed as rescue boats appeared to locate their target. The grief rippled through the group.
It’s a scene that has repeated itself across New York during an unseasonably hot and dry summer that has seen people flock to rivers, lakes and pools to seek relief from record temperatures. The number of drownings in the state is at the highest level in decades.
State Police have investigated 25 fatal drownings statewide this summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day, a 67 percent increase over the same time period last year when 15 people drowned (the tally, which was provided to the Times Union, does not include the investigations in which county sheriff’s departments have taken the lead, which drives fatalities even higher). Troopers handled 16 investigations in 2020 and nine the previous year.
Zooming out, there is a degree of clarity when examining federal statistics. Drownings statewide in 2020 — the most recent year for which federal data is available — increased 32 percent over the year before, jumping to 242 from 184, which is the median average dating back over two decades. The fatalities, which include all fatal water deaths, are the highest since at least 1999 when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention database began.
“This is really a (nationwide) trend that has turned around the continued slow decrease of fatal drownings in this country since 2019,” said Dr. Linda Quan, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Drownings nationwide had dipped 32 percent over the past decade before the reversal. Quan attributed the surge to a confluence of factors, including people seeking to beat back pandemic boredom, rising temperatures, increasingly affordable amateur watercraft and a lack of universal water safety programs.
Two more mysterious drownings:

Reported on August 30:
Deadly car crashes continue to rise
August 30, 2022
Springfield, Mass. – The number of deadly car crashes has already hit record highs for the year, and the sharp increase is puzzling safety experts.
What might be the most confusing for experts is that there are fewer people on the roads than there were before the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite lower traffic volumes, accidents keep happening at a greater frequency.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, deadly crashes hit their highest quarterly total in the first three months of this year- seven percent higher than the first quarter of 2021 and 22 percent higher than in 2019.
That reverses a pre-pandemic trend, which saw traffic deaths drop for three consecutive years going into 2020.
22News spoke with Mark Schieldrop of AAA Northeast, who said the uptick in dangerous driving behaviors can be attributed to several factors, “It is likely that when the pandemic began and lockdowns happened, the roads were empty and people found that they could drive upwards of 100 mph. The other issue is that the number of citations overall seems to be going down at the same time.”
There is also a trend of decreased traffic enforcement. A 2021 study of 1,000 police officers found that 60 percent of them were less likely to stop a vehicle during the pandemic than they were before 2020.
Records indicate that people are driving without a seat belt, above the speed limit, and while impaired at higher rates than before the pandemic began. Experts say it is also possible that more people are texting and using their cell phones while driving, possibly contributing to more deadly crashes.
Mark said that reversing this trend starts with drivers slowing down, maintaining a safe following distance and simply being courteous to others sharing the road.

September 11, 2022
Yorkshire, New York - A fatal one-car crash in Cattaraugus County is under investigation. Emergency responders were called to State Route 16 (NY-16) near Worden Road in Yorkshire, New York at approximately 10:30 pm on Friday, September 9, 2022 for a report of a crash involving a single vehicle. When New York State Police arrived on the scene they found a 2008 Pontiac G5 had crashed into a utility pole.
According to a written release from the New York State Police, the car was being driven north and "was observed by multiple witnesses operating erratically before it exited the eastern shoulder of the road causing it to go airborne and strike a utility pole. The driver, Jarrett D. Kile, 30 of Arcade, NY and front seat passenger, Willie J. Boyles, 33 of Delevan, NY were ejected from the vehicle." Another passenger, identified as 31-year-old Amber L. Boyle, the front seat passenger, was brought to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville, New York. He later succumbed to his injuries. Cosentino, the rear seat passenger, was brought to Erie County Medical Center with multiple injuries and was listed in critical condition according to police.

Woman fatally injured in I-15 crash near Tremonton, three-year-old seriously injured
September 8, 2022
A minivan passenger died on Tuesday after being ejected from the vehicle on I-15 near Tremonton, Utah. Around 5:30 p.m., according to a news release from the Utah Department of Public Safety, a Ford Freestar minivan with six occupants was headed northbound at a speed purportedly far below the posted speed limit. Traveling in the right lane, the minivan “was rear-ended by a Freightliner semi,” the news release states. The minivan spun off the right side of the road and rolled, authorities wrote, ejecting a 27-year-old woman and a three-year-old child who were not wearing safety restraints. All occupants were transported to a local hospital, according to the release, where the woman died from injures sustained during the crash. The three-year-old was airlifted to another hospital, authorities wrote, while the remaining four did not sustain significant injuries.
Sgt. Cameron Roden, the public information officer with the Utah Highway Patrol, said the driver was 29 years old and the remaining uninjured occupants were all under the age of 11. The most recent updates given to Roden indicated the three-year-old was in the hospital in serious condition.
Roden said the minivan was “half-on, half-off the road” when the collision occurred, and the truck driver told troopers the minivan appeared suddenly prior to crash. Roden said there were no immediate indicators of intoxication for either party.
Roden said the incident involved some “unique twists,” and was still under investigation. According to the release, the minivan was reported to authorities prior to the accident for having been parked in the emergency lane, though troopers could not find the minivan on the roadway. The minivan was later located at a gas station, authorities wrote, where the driver was contacted and the incident was cleared. “Shortly after the Trooper cleared the incident is when the crash occurred,” the news release states. “There’s still a lot to look into,” Roden said, encouraging the public to report reckless drivers by calling 9-1-1 or a local dispatch.

A flight instructor from Santa Monica [CA] Flyers, a flight school located at the airport, and a student were killed while trying to land following an introductory flight lesson at about 4:25 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Accident Investigator Eliott Simpson said the flight took off at about 3:30 p.m., flew along the coast for about an hour and everything appeared normal during the landing approach before the plane suddenly climbed and crashed. “We have witness statements and video at the airport indicating that airplane, shortly after or possibly just before touch down, pitched into the air aggressively nose up, climbed to about a hundred feet and rolled back to the ground,” he said. Firefighters were assisted by the Santa Monica Police, Santa Monica Airport Operations, and NTSB. There were no impacts to Santa Monica neighborhoods.

Support the family of Dolores Michelle Krabec
September 10, 2022
Indiantown, FL - Sadly and suddenly, Dolores Michelle Krabec passed away on Friday, September 9th. She was a wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandma, wonderful person, and dear friend. Dorrie was always the first to arrive when help was needed, and I am now asking for help to support her family in this great time of loss. Any support you can provide would be helpful. Services are in the planning stages, as this is an unexpected and tragic loss.
Dorrie was an active member of her community of Indiantown, 4-H programs, Pony Club and horse rescue. Writing this is not something I have ever expected I would have to do, so I have no words, and there are just no words that describe the kind of friend she was. Dorrie was family first as she spent countless hours driving to horse shows, homeschooling, and just all-around super mom. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her. She left behind a husband, two daughters, three sons, a daughter n law, a grandson, a mother, a father, a sister, an extended family and countless friends.
Twitter: Krabec reportedly died of a heart attack and was in her 50s:

Stephen J. Glatfelter, 73
September 10, 2022
Stephen J. Glatfelter, 73, died suddenly Wednesday August 10, 2022, at his home in Rio Nido, California, where he lived for the past 35 years. Steve began piano at an early age and played French horn in the high school band. He taught himself scores from Broadway shows he attended - Mame and Hello Dolly were favorites - serenading the neighbors through the open windows. For his college thesis he played his own composition before a panel of judges at the Philadelphia Symphony, receiving a standing ovation from conductor Eugene Ormandy. In the last twenty years Steve taught himself the banjo, spending many hours honing his skill and playing with others. Following college Steve worked on a farm in Hawaii, then as a waiter and cab driver in San Francisco. In the mid '70s he became an architectural illustrator working on the Trans-Alaska pipeline at Prudhoe Bay, and later for Bay Area Rapid Transit and California prisons. In the last thirty years Steve created drawings for commercial and residential buildings, including the Rio Nido Lodge.
Every day since the '80s Steve jogged or walked the roads of Rio Nido, stopping to talk and joke with neighbors along the way. His penchant for finding humor everywhere - he once said he thoroughly enjoyed being stuck in traffic - and his love of asking questions allowed Steve to easily converse with anyone and endeared him to his family and friends.
