A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.

Died suddenly on Monday October 2, 2023, at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, Barrie at the age of 16, Jadyn, of Barrie, cherished and loved daughter. Jadyn was a kind, loving, determined, and disciplined young lady. Beautiful inside and out, she could instantly light up a room with her sense of humour, vibrant smile, and infectious laughter. She was an accomplished athlete and an incredible cook. Rugby was the center of her life. She starred with the Aurora Barbarians, Barrie Rugby, and Nantyr Shores S.S. Tritons, and was recently invited to play at the provincial level with the Toronto Reds. She was a fierce competitor who challenged and supported her teammates. She will be deeply missed by so many.

Smoke's Poutinerie founder and CEO, Ryan Smolkin, has died at the age of 50. Smolkin, who was born in Ottawa, was considered a pioneer and a trailblazer in the culinary industry, thanks to his ever-growing quick-serve poutine restaurant chain. The Ajax-based company opened its first location in Toronto in 2008 at 218 Adelaide St. W., and went on to open more than 150 outlets in Canada and the U.S. over the next several years. The company attributed Smolkin's death to unexpected complications from a recent surgery.

Nancy Joan Sherwin passed away unexpectedly at the Meaford Hospital on October 5, 2023, at the age of 57. A job at Bethune House in Gravenhurst led to a teaching job at the Bethune Medical College in Shijiazhaung, China. She retired from teaching in June 2023. Nancy loved to sing and act -she performed in several choirs and amateur theatricals. Her family was most important to her, and some of her fondest memories were of spending time at the family cottage on Moira Lake. Donations to the MS Society.

Rashied died peacefully with his loving family by his side, on Thursday September 28th, 2023, after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. Rashied began his career in 2009 with 22 Division, where he worked in Uniform Patrol, the Neighbourhood Policing Unit, and the Criminal Investigations Unit. He later transferred to Intelligence, where he worked in the Commercial Auto Crimes Unit. Rashied was a valued member of the Peel Regional Police family and a diehard Tampa Bay Buccaneers Fan.
