A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):
Youth suicide attempts, ideation rose globally during pandemic, new Calgary study finds
March 10, 2023
After analyzing 11 million pediatric emergency department visits and comparing pre-pandemic numbers to numbers during the pandemic, a group of researchers found visits from suicide attempts and ideation increased globally during the pandemic. A new study led by the University of Calgary found that emergency department visits for suicide attempts among youth under 18 increased by 22 per cent during the pandemic. Visits from young people experiencing suicidal ideation also rose globally by eight per cent. The study analyzed more than 11 million pediatric emergency department visits across 18 countries. Researchers in Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and Dublin compared pre-pandemic visits to visits during the pandemic, up to July 2021.
Lead author Sheri Madigan, a professor of clinical psychology at the University of Calgary, says before the pandemic, an average pediatric emergency department would see about 102 visits per month for suicide attempts by youth. During the pandemic, that increased to an average of 125 visits. "As a researcher and as a parent, these findings were really distressing," said Madigan. She says it's important to recognize that despite an overall decrease in pediatric emergency room visits for physical ailments — likely due to fear of catching COVID-19 — hospitals still saw an increase in visits from suicide attempts. Of those children and teens, the study found that girls were considerably more likely than boys to end up in the emergency department for severe mental distress.

Earlier this month, Nevaeh came down with a fever. Her other siblings had colds around the same time, so her parents weren’t surprised. “All of our kids were sick. They got better. So we just thought 'OK, Nevaeh you're next,’” Eric explains. Her mother, Donna Johnson, was able to bring her temperature down within hours of symptoms showing up. She put the toddler to bed, but by the next morning, her symptoms worsened. “She changed her diaper and noticed she had blotches. The first sign of anything was the blotches [while] changing her diaper. And she's like ,'We just have to go to the hospital,”' Eric said, adding Nevaeh seemed disoriented. The girl was rushed to hospital and went into cardiac arrest. She was revived, but it happened a second time and she didn’t survive. All of it happened suddenly.
