CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
Two Mounties “died suddenly”:
Bruce Franklin Holliday, 52
February 3, 2023
Wetaskiwin, Alberta - With extreme heartbreak, we announce the sudden passing of Staff Sergeant Bruce Holliday, after having served 18 years with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He started his career in security at the Trizec Building in Winnipeg before moving to Edmonton, Alberta as Security Manager at Canada Place. In 2004, his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer like his father and grandfather finally came true when he was accepted to the RCMP. Bruce loved doing jobs outside and playing with his German Shepherd, Ringo. He was a champion cheerleader for his girls at all they did. He loved watching them grow into the fine young ladies that they are becoming. His love for his wife was never-ending and he loved spending time with her and brightening her day any way he could. He had a desire to serve his community which was evident by the time, effort, and passion he put into everything he did. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to any friends and neighbours. He was an incredible man, friend, officer, and especially husband and father and will be forever missed. Donations are greatly accepted to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Bruce’s memory.

Aaron David Zimmerman, 41
February 2, 2023
It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Aaron David Zimmerman, who we lost unexpectedly and tragically on a family vacation in Cancun, Mexico on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at the young age of 41 years. His laugh, smile, jokes, calming spirit, and love of family will be so deeply missed. He was an amazing father, son, brother, stepbrother, uncle, friend and a stand up RCMP Officer. He served for six years in the Central Alberta area and loved his RCMP family. Aaron watched his dad work in Corrections, and from a young age wanted to become an RCMP Officer. After years of working in Corrections, his hard work, commitment, patience, and dedication to his dream was realized on June 19, 2017, when he officially became a member of the RCMP. Aaron lit up every room he walked into, and he knew how to make people smile no matter what. In recent years, he had taken up skiing and riding his Harley. These activities made him feel alive and brought him so much joy. He told the best jokes, loved the people closest to him deeply, and only ever wanted the best for people. His life was way too short, but he lived his forty-one years to the fullest.

David Desjardins, 66
January 18, 2023
It is with many broken hearts that we announce the passing of David Desjardins of Aylmer, Québec at age 66. David Desjardins passed away on January 12th, 2023, at 3:25 PM from complications that arose due to a rare autoimmune disease he had developed in early December 2022. David, at his heart, was both an author and an adventurer in equal measure, as happy on his hikes and trips as he was working on his poems and stories. Any passion David had, he pursued wholeheartedly and without compromise, doing nothing in half measures. He loved teaching his students Karate, in conjunction with his fellow Sensei and he cherished every class he participated in. The house in which he and his wife lived and raised their children for over thirty years is filled with the amateur paintings, statuettes and other collections that he accumulated over the course of his life. But more than that, David had a kindness in his soul that never tarnished, and a massive heart that remained strong until the very end. Even when he thought the end might come, he remained unfalteringly polite and courteous to the doctors and nurses who tended to him during his time in hospital.

Her husband and children were beside her wrapping her up in a circle of love right until the end. Janice had a sharp eye and whip-smart sense of humour. She was kind and generous and full of fun. She loved holidays and was always looking forward to and making plans for the next celebration with her friends and family. She was a devoted daughter, a loving sister, and a passionate mom and early childhood educator who cultivated in her children, and in all of the children whose lives she touched, an enduring sense of imagination. She loved music. She loved to dance. She loved being around people, going out to community events, talking, singing, reading, painting, gardening, and playing cards and games. She approached new community members with an open heart and a genuine desire to make a new friend. She was humble and diplomatic but unafraid to meet injustice with courage and integrity. Janice volunteered her time to many organizations over the years. Shane Albert Nordell, 56
January 30, 2023
Edson - With much sorrow, our family is announcing the sudden death of our Shane. He was many things to many people and his life was filled with anxiousness and turbulence. Love conquers all things, and we who loved him are filled with a painful void. Shane loved his family. He loved his home on the farm where he was raised, and where he felt safe and supported. He loved operating heavy equipment, farm machinery, vehicles of any kind. He quite often could be found repairing ailing equipment he used to maintain the farm yard, and contribute to field work. Shane never turned anyone away who needed something to eat or a place to lay their heads. Serving up pancakes at any hour of the day was his go-to comfort and that of his friends and acquaintances. When he was very young, a neighbours home burned, and a little boy in that house lost all his toys. Shane gathered the four pennies he had and wanted to be taken over so he could give them to the little boy to buy new toys.

Kristopher Douglas Yip, 47
January 27, 2023
Prince George - On the evening of January 18th, our beloved Kris enjoyed one last ride before his precious loving heart gave out. At only 47 years old, Kris leaves behind his mother, father sons and sister. From the time he was born, he was the light of our family. His beautiful smile, gentle demeanor and kind heart was apparent from the start and only grew from there, right up until the end. Growing up in the 80s, Kris enjoyed free range of our little Millar Addition neighbourhood with his lifelong friends, getting into all sorts of shenanigans and always having fun. Kris's passion for sports was spawned at a very young age, excelling at everything he tried (from skating to skiing to climbing and beyond). Eventually though, cycling became his focus and his path was set for greatness. Kris may have started with road cycling but by age 47, he had pretty much rode or raced in all disciplines and enjoyed every single one. His achievements in cycling are many, too many to list, but include more than just wins and medals. In 1993, Kris became the Junior National Criterium Champion and National Junior Road Champion which were highlights for his family and friends. In 2022, Kris qualified to represent Canada at the UCI Esports World Championships and helped get his teammate to a top ten finish. Always the sportsman and gentleman, Kris never talked of his own accomplishments, only those of others. Kris did, however, shout from the rooftops about his boys. They were his pride and joy and relished in all they did and accomplished in their own pursuits. Kris's kindness, gentle manner and endless patience live on in his boys.

January 25, 2023
Penticton - We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Glen Adams on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at 66 years young. Glen loved life and was full of gratitude. He woke up every day happy, whistling and singing a tune. Glen was very intelligent and truly was a man of many talents and accomplishments – the most astonishing one was that he literally knew the first line of every song that was ever written. He was a natural crooner and loved almost all genres of music. Glen loved the outdoors and athletics. Over the course of his life he played hockey, soccer, ran marathons, completed two Ironman competitions, skied Grouse, Cypress, Whistler/Blackcomb, Sun Peaks and of course many runs at Apex. He cycled, hiked and walked too may trails to count. He snorkelled, kayaked, sailed and scuba-dived. And, much to the chagrin of his father-in-law, he even went sky diving one year. He also loved to fish – he treasured several trips with his buddy, Terry, off the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Glen had multiple careers over the course of his life from working in factories and sawmills, to waiter/barkeeper, to hotel manager, to insulation salesman, to industrial radiographer, and then a big career transition in his late 20’s into a successful marketing career in the food service industry ending with The Lamb Company until his retirement in 2018. And, as it was with Glen with everything – his poured his whole heart and soul into going above and beyond to make sure the job got done right. Glen was a very loving, warm, and oh so loyal partner. They enjoyed many good times and travelled to some of the world’s most beautiful places together. They were and always will be Glancy to those who knew them well. Donation, in Glen’s honour, to Scleroderma Canada.

Lori's caring and positive attitude made everyone around her feel comfortable. She knew how to make tough situations bearable and ordinary ones fun and memorable. Quite simply, she was a joy to be around. She was our light. Lori attended school in West Vancouver, where she made many lifelong friends spanning from pre-school to high school, maintaining strong ties over the decades. Lori attended SFU and went on to establish a long career at ICBC, again cultivating many dear friends along the way. Drew Maxwell Atkinson, 53
January 25, 2023
Abbotsford - At a young 54 years of age, it deeply pains us to have to say good-bye to our beloved Drew who passed away on December 29, 2022, after battling a resistant respiratory infection. Family mattered most to Drew and his family wanted him to thrive, which meant enlisting the support of social and community services to have that independent life the rest of us take for granted. With the support in place, it proved to be a challenging but good path because Drew was surrounded by caring and dedicated family and service teams. When Drew was younger he embraced his disabilities and would not let them get him down by using special expertise and tools so he could enjoy the likes of swimming, water polo, downhill skiing. He loved participating in sports as much as watching them with friends and family. Drew also spent countless years volunteering at various charitable organizations and shelters and made fast friends there, sharing common interests. We will miss and forever love Drew.

Charles Axmoth "Charlie" Davison, 60
February 1, 2023
Charles Axmoth "Charlie" Davison - age 60, of Black River Lake, passed away suddenly January 28, 2023, after a day of working on his dream home by the lake with the love of his life. He was a loving husband and wanted nothing more than to ensure his wife happiness. They were blessed with grandchildren who he loved dearly; spending time with them brought him great joy. They were also parents to several exchange students over the years from Brazil, Mexico, Whales, Colombia, Japan and Korea. Leaving lasting impressions on them, they found great pleasure in creating memorable experiences with them, trying new food and learning language. Charlie was a doer, a creator, and master of his craft. He spent many years as a builder and home inspector, operating his company Home Sweet Home Inspections. Known for his strong work ethic and professionalism, you could depend on Charlie. He was a visionary, with an imagination capable of bringing dreams to reality. He was well respected for his dedication of many years to the Nova Scotia soccer community. Involved at all levels, whether it was playing himself, coaching his kids, or coaching his wife’s team, refereeing, or mentoring and training new referees. He was a referee’s referee! In 2013, his dream to watch a live match in Brazil came true. Charlie truly left lasting impacts on his soccer family. Known for his sense of humour (aka sarcasm), Charlie was full of character. He always had a smart tongue and loved laughing and joking with everyone. Charlie was supportive and caring. He was always helping others, and there when you needed him most. When he loved, he loved. On the outside he was rough and tough, but on the inside, he was so kindhearted, a big teddy bear. For anyone who knows Charlie, pants were never an option; no matter the temperature or time of year, he was in shorts. True to his Scottish heritage, he would wear his kilt at any chance.

Paul J. Mullin, 63
January 30, 2023
Antigonish - It is with deeply broken hearts that his love of his life and daughter share the sad news of the passing of their beloved husband and father, Paul on Jan 28, 2023, with them both at his side. Paul loved the simple things in life and thought the best way to look at life was through the lens of a camera. Always too humble to take credit for his work, he was an excellent photographer, and anyone who saw his work was quick to praise it. He was an avid Ham radio operator, using his dad’s call sign (VE1VEC) and looked forward to being able to spend more time chatting with his friends around the world. Paul was blessed with the sarcastic Mullin humour and brought every room to laughter. We looked at an item and saw it, Paul looked at it and saw an opportunity for a picture. The intellect of his father with the social graces of his mother made for great conversation with Paul. His brothers and sisters were always left wondering if his stories were true and kept them all guessing. Paul worked for 25 years at Construction Aggregate, Auld’s Cove, and the last 17 years with Wood Environmental and Infrastructure in Dartmouth. He took great pride in his job and had the respect of his coworkers for his excellent work ethic. Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Mark, I don't always read these postings, but when I do, I feel that I should light a candle for each human whom the world has suddenly lost, at least for a time. People used to talk about "unnecessary deaths," or "premature deaths," and though I always thought those terms were awfully theoretical back then, the phrases come to my mind all the time now. Are we supposed to become resigned to these shocking "mysteries," even comfortable with them? God forbid.
I should have written you many times before, to thank you for unflaggingly remembering these victims, week after week, when the pressure is constant to forget them and "move on." It is an important service that you do, to my mind a holy one, on behalf of all of us.
I wonder if even the most indoctrinated will ponder a connection between the infants and their vaccinated parents.
