A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

A film student “died suddenly” in Quebec:
Jane Orion Bau, 21
July 23, 2023
Jane was born six weeks early – on International Women’s Day, 2002. By age four she was an avid reader and prolific artist. Not one to pay attention to the crowd, she would rather marvel over a clover field than watch a competitive soccer pitch. Jane was down for all kinds of family activities with Sandy, Fred and Sabine – cooking, forest walks with Rontu, outdoor adventures, road trips, and international travel. She found joy in gathering and collecting – berries, rocks, moss, clams, mushrooms, and vintage wear. In her teen years Jane became an accomplished filmmaker. At the age of 17, she wrote, directed, and scored her first film, The Sunday Cycle, which earned recognition at acclaimed festivals, including the All American High School Film Festival, the Whistler Film Festival, and the Vancouver Short Film Festival. She directed several short films, including From Earth to Heaven, an experimental documentary featuring her grandfather Paul, with whom she shared a passion for photography. This summer, she was art-directing and collaborating on a multi-media installation of her film The Pulse, based on Montreal’s metro. Proud to be financially independent, Jane worked summer jobs to supplement grants. At the time of her passing she was in her fourth year in Film Production at Concordia University in Montreal, where she shared an apartment with two roommates and dear friends from high school. She spent her free time playing music, going out with friends, and cooking. She had just returned from a trip to France in June and was looking forward to her first summer in Montreal.

Louie Thomas "Lou" Ristov, 25

Fergus - Louie Thomas Ristov, at 25 years of age, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on June 26, 2023. Louie lived his life in "BIG LOU" style. He was an outdoorsman, intellectual, athlete and inquisitive individual. His yearning for knowledge was an integral part of his personality. Louie's charisma and beautiful blue eyes caught your attention, and after that, he immersed you on a journey of discovery. He challenged theories, busted myths, and shared his love of movies, music and history. While studying at Western University, he fostered strong bonds of friendship through shared beliefs and experiences, which contributed to his becoming the young man we admired and loved. We admired Louie for being unapologetically himself. Donations can be directed to C.M.H.A.

It is with great sadness and shock that the Crowe family puts to rest a very beloved father, brother, husband and "solid as a stone" friend, Floyd Crowe (of Kirkland Lake/New Liskeard area). Floyd left his physical body at the young age of 56 years. He departed this world immediately without enduring any extensive physical pain. His passing was due to congestive heart failure unknown to Floyd and family. Floyd has been a cherished husband and most trusted individual to myself and all his family and friends. Even during periods of being a single parent, he made sure his children knew how much he loved them, playing the exceptional role of warm and nurturing mother and father. JR lived life to the fullest. He had been battling cancer for almost two and half years and although he is not here with us anymore, we know he is at peace. The past years had been hard for him and yet he still managed to stay positive through all the ups and downs in his journey. This is a true testament of his character and he was an inspiration through his strength and bravery during this time. His laugh was contagious and one of a kind that was impossible from being spread to others. He had a goofiness about him and he loved to bug others and make it his goal to bring a smile to your face.

(Not asking you to do this but...) I want to see a graph of deaths, starting let's say starting back in 2017, by age and cause. I especially want to see this graph for 2019 and 2020, and compare each to 2021, 2022, and 2023. It can't be that young people like this usually die at this rate. It just can't be.
Also, living in your 60s and 70s used to be this kind of golden age! Now more and more are dying during that time. I'm sure average life expectancy has gone down.
