CANADA
Note: Last week’s obits from Ontario, as well as recent obits from Quebec and other provinces, will be included in next week’s compilation as our research team catches up with the deluge.
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
Nova Scotia tight-lipped about spike in deaths: 'Unexpectedly high numbers of people are dying in an untimely fashion,' expert says
March 7, 2023
Combing through Nova Scotia's death data, infectious diseases researcher Tara Moriarty offers up a simple but chilling conclusion about what's happening in the province. "Unexpectedly high numbers of people are dying in an untimely fashion before they would normally," said Moriarty, who is an associate professor at the University of Toronto. Statistics Canada tracks excess mortality, which is the actual number of deaths above what is expected. For the first 10 months of 2022, there were 848 more deaths than expected in Nova Scotia. The province said 546 of those were due to COVID-19. That means almost 36 per cent of the deaths are attributable to other causes. But it's unclear what those other causes are. The province declined interview requests with Health Department officials and the chief medical examiner.
Statistics Canada's excess mortality tracker was recently updated with data from Nova Scotia covering September and October 2022. During those two months, it said there were 304 more deaths than expected. Health Department spokesperson Khalehla Perrault said there were 97 COVID-19 deaths during that time — up from 41 in the province's September and October epidemiology reports. "There is sometimes a lag in reporting a COVID-19 death as it does not always appear immediately in the data system due to reviews and investigations, as appropriate," Perrault wrote in an email. In Nova Scotia, deaths attributed to COVID-19 capture both cases in which coronavirus infection was the main cause and those in which it was believed to be a contributing factor. In cases where the cause of death is unknown or a person is suspected to have had COVID-19, tests are carried out to find evidence of the disease.
Statistics Canada tracks excess mortality in weekly blocks. The last time the estimate was negative for Nova Scotia was on May 21, 2022. Moriarty is the lead for the COVID-19 Resources Canada project, which does modelling to help members of the public better understand the COVID-19 situation. It receives funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada for its work. Moriarty is calling on the province to explain what is behind the persistent, positive excess mortality numbers. She worries that without an explanation, purveyors of COVID-19 misinformation will argue that COVID-19 vaccines are to blame.

Heartbreaking news from Canada on Friday, February 24, after it was revealed a young Canadian boy had died suddenly while on holiday with his family in Mexico
February 24, 2023
The mother of a ‘healthy’ young Canadian boy shared the heartbreaking news that her son had died suddenly while the family were on holiday in Mexico. Kelly Chaput, a former Toronto Sun staffer, and her husband were with their two sons on holiday in Mexico last week when Dylan, 13, suddenly became unwell. According to reports, he was playing at the beach with his little brother on Valentine’s Day when he complained of a headache and other symptoms that suggested sunstroke. Last year, a routine eye exam for Dylan revealed hydrocephalus and he had emergency brain surgery in June 2022 at Halifax paediatric hospital. He was given the all-clear from an MRI and follow-up appointment in October. But the condition returned. Mexican doctors tried to drain the fluid in his brain but Dylan’s condition was too advanced and he died of organ failure. “He was a fine, healthy boy, playing in the ocean with his brother, going to restaurants, shopping for a gift for his girlfriend,” said his devastated mother. “He was perfect! It happened so fast. There was no indication anything was wrong.”

Vincenzo Rizzo, 74
February 17, 2023
Thunder-Bay - It is with profound sadness that the family of Vincenzo Rizzo announces his passing on February 15, 2023 at the age of 74. Born in Borboruso, Cosenza, Calabria, Italy. Vincenzo loved his family. Though family was spread across the world, that did not impact the bond he had with each of them. Vincenzo could be found socializing with friends at the Italian Cultural Centre where he was a long-time member. Mostly, he spent his time with family. Daily visits with his brothers, who were his truest of friends, or at home with his family and his two granddaughters. Becoming a Nonno kept Vincenzo young and made him soft over the years. He continued to surround himself with the people who mattered most to him, especially during his times of illness. The family of Vincenzo would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the TGH Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. Donations can be made to St. Anthony's Parish or TBRHSC Cardiovascular Surgery Unit.

In Canada the press and the health authorities are already actively attempting to distract the public by announcing, for instance, that 15,000 people have died waiting for treatment or proper diagnosis during the period of the pandemic. While that may be true, the result is that the public automatically assumes that all the excess deaths is explained by that. It appears that ignorance is bliss as far as the public is concerned.
These all make me so sad, but it gives me consolation that you’re honoring them in this way. Your work is priceless.
