Mallemolen singer Heddy Lester died at the age of 72

Heddy Lester passed away in her home in Amsterdam on Sunday evening. The singer and actress, who participated in the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of the Netherlands in 1977 with the song De Mallemolen, was 72 years old. Lester passed away from bladder cancer. Her brother, singer Frank Affolter, announced her death on Tuesday on the Private page in De Telegraaf. “She fought the disease tremendously,” he says. "At first it seemed to be going in the right direction, until a few weeks ago it turned out that the cancer had also affected her liver. Then it suddenly went very quickly." With the song De Mallemolen, written by Affolter and Wim Hogenkamp, Lester reached twelfth place at the Eurovision Song Contest in London. The song didn't become a big hit, but it did grow into a classic over the years. Lester performed extensively in theater throughout her career, working alongside her brother. In 2020 she played in the film Greetings from Gerri with Frank Lammers in the lead role.

The grief over the loss of her husband remained great, but she was still able to enjoy, especially her granddaughter as you can read in 'Passion of love' with the photo above. In 2022 Wil was doing better. With humor she wrote the article 'OMANIDO' about how seniors can have fun with each other. When we received the shocking message this week that Wil had passed away completely unexpectedly, we couldn't believe it. Wil still had many plans for 2023. She took great pleasure in looking after her granddaughter, was an enthusiastic employee behind the bar at the Stadsgehoorzaal and was sometimes a jury member there. And of course she would continue to write for Fief. Her last article will be on Fief on February 13.
