Dire Straits guitarist Jack Sonni has died at the age of 68. The legendary guitarist’s death was announced by the rock’n’roll band in a post online on Thursday. Alongside a black and white photo of Sonni on X, formerly known as Twitter, they wrote: “#JackSonni Rest In Peace #DireStraits“. Sonni was known as “the other guitarist” during the London band’s Brothers in Arms era. Brothers in Arms was the fifth album that was released by Dire Straits in 1985. On Tuesday, Dire Straits Legacy, an official group of musicians who formerly toured with the band, announced the guitarist had been suffering from ill health in a social media post.

Faye Fantarrow, a rising British singer and songwriter whose debut EP was produced by Eurythmics star Dave Stewart, has died. She was 21. Fantarrow died at home Saturday after being diagnosed with a rare glioma brain tumor in September 2022, her mother, Pam Fantarrow, announced. She had twice beaten leukemia since learning she had cancer at ages 8 and 13.

Lord Alan Haworth had contracted bacterial pneumonia while on a tour of Iceland and Greenland with his wife Maggie Rae last week. The 75-year-old was airlifted to hospital in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik but sadly passed away on Monday, August 28, following a heart attack. Tribute have been paid to the politician by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who called him a 'wonderful, warm and witty companion'. Lord Haworth had been secretary of the parliamentary Labour Party from 1992 to 2004, then became a member of the House of Lords.

A wonderful colleague, Dens served for two decades as the magazine’s production editor, where she interacted with countless readers and authors. For the last seven years, she was lead product and content manager, helping to rebuild the Physics World website, spearheading Physics World Jobs, and – most recently – overseeing the creation of a new digital version of the magazine.

Yorkshire - Michael Gilbertson, of High Catton near York, passed away in August and his funeral will take place at East Riding Crematorium on September 19. Mr Gilbertson was the principal veterinary surgeon and owner of the Birchwood practice in Gate Helmsley, having previously worked at two other surgeries in East Yorkshire and at a specialist equine hospital. The Birchwood Vets posted a tribute on Facebook: “It is with great shock and sadness that we have to announce the death of our principal veterinary surgeon, Mike. Sadly, Mike’s cancer was incredibly advanced and aggressive and therefore his deterioration and death were at a pace none of us could have ever imagined. All the Birchwood team is devastated by the news, but would like to reassure clients that the usual high levels of care will continue to be provided.”

Corfu, Greece - A British police officer has died suddenly while on holiday in Greece. The woman, who worked for Surrey Police, died on the island of Corfu. The officer, who has not yet been named, was staying in popular seaside village Kavos with friends, reports the Mirror. Surrey Police confirmed Greek authorities are conducting an investigation into the circumstances of her death. According to local Greek reports the woman was found unconscious on a street by a member of the public in the early hours of Friday September 1 and police have cordoned off the street where she was found. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said it was supporting the woman's family and was also in contact with the local authorities.

A child who died after falling ill at Camp Bestival at the weekend was a three-week-old baby girl. The youngster sadly passed away after attending the popular event near the Staffordshire border, on Saturday. Police officers were called to the family festival around 12.37 am to reports a child was ill. Paramedics administered medical treatment to the newborn but she unfortunately remained in a critical condition. Her suspected cause of death is yet to be established with an inquest date yet still to be set. But a notice of the death - which confirmed the child's age - has been received by the coroner.
Fundraiser in memory of Southend teen who died in the sea

The family of a Southend teenager who died after suffering a cardiac arrest on holiday have revealed they hope to set up a foundation in his name. Jude Harvey died after suffering a “heart episode” when swimming in the sea in Ibiza on July 23. Now his family are hoping to set up the Jude Harvey Foundation to run carry out heart screenings and secure his legacy. A fundraiser has also been set up for charity Cardiac Risk in the Young - and they have raised £6,000 already.

A cancer sufferer who received a £5,000 donation from football star Jack Grealish to help fund treatment has died before the clinical trial he'd hoped to join was made possible. Dylan Lamb, 20, from Staffordshire, was battling blood cell cancer when his family organised a £1 million appeal on GoFundMe to raise funds for the clinical trial treatment in America. After more than 10,000 donations, the total raised currently stands at £172,00 - and £5,000 of that seemingly down to Manchester City and England winger Grealish. Dylan was diagnosed with Precursor T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in April last year after becoming unwell with back pain. The student, who lived in Wavertree while he was studying international business at the University of Liverpool, had returned home for the Easter break when he first experienced symptoms. Phoebe Cole, Dylan's girlfriend, shared the tragic passing of her partner on Facebook last week.

A member of the public is trying to get more public defibrillators in Swindon town centre after being refused the use of one during a medical emergency. Amy Biggs, 25, from West Swindon, was in the Brunel North multi-storey car park when she found herself called upon to perform first-aid on a woman who had collapsed. Amy sought out the Brunel Shopping Centre as the closest place to her that was likely to have a potentially life-saving defibrillator, but when she asked to use it - she was told 'no'. Amy was then left to perform CPR manually until Wiltshire Air Ambulance and paramedics arrived with their own kit, but despite almost 90 minutes worth of first-aid, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Amy said it was found the woman had died after a 'massive' heart attack. The family of the woman who died - a teacher from Swindon - have asked for her not to be identified. But they did offer the following tribute to her: "She was an exceptional person, an inspirational teacher, a talented musician, and a devoted mother.”

Rebecca Marsden went into cardiac arrest on July 19 and died peacefully with her loved ones by her side in Blackpool Victoria Hospital two weeks later. The 37-year-old, known as Becki to family and friends, was mum to two daughters – Millie, 7, and Penny, 3 – and a loving wife to her husband Mike. The couple celebrated 10 happy years as husband and wife last year. Becki, from Kirkham, was a senior nurse on Blackpool Vic’s critical care ward where she brought comfort to thousands of patients and their families over the years. This year was her 15th working at the hospital, her second home, where Becki regarded her colleagues as one big family. In a tragic twist of fate, Becki found herself in the caring hands of her friends and colleagues on the same ward, though she sadly never regained consciousness. She passed away peacefully on Friday, August 4. She had complained of dizziness a week before but had played Netball earlier in the week and had no reason to worry for her health. “There were no telltale signs”, said Mike, who administered CPR when Becki went into cardiac arrest on the morning of July 19. Her cause of death was found to be cardiomyopathy, a heart disorder which can be genetic and go undetected with virtually no symptoms.

A fleet of lorries took to the streets of Nottinghamshire in a procession to honour a driver and dad-of-four who suddenly died earlier this year. Ryan Street, from Kirkby-in-Ashfield, sadly died after falling ill at work on Monday, July 17. Mr Street, 33, was a lorry driver for Pinxton-based Pink Parrot and had no known pre-existing medical condition. Now his memory has been honoured by his family and workplace at his funeral. A convoy of Pink Parrot lorries travelled from Mr Street's home in Mary Street, Kirkby to Sherwood Forest Crematorium between 9am and 10 am on Saturday, August 26. Mr Street had come to work like any other day and had no known pre-existing medical conditions, his boss said. Chloe Scholey, transport manager at the firm, said his death had left his family in shock. “We still don't have any answers, all we know is his heart gave up and he stopped breathing," she said. "There was nothing wrong with him at all, that's the big shock." Ms Scholey and Mr Street's partner, Brooke, both received a distressed call from him whilst he was carrying out a delivery in Sutton-in-Ashfield. "I got a phone call, he was crying and saying he'd been sick and didn't feel well," recalled Ms Scholey. After they both arrived, Mr Street started to "turn blue" before his boss carried out CPR on him. Paramedics soon arrived, including via ambulance. "They were working on him for about an hour then they took him to King's Mill Hospital," continued Ms Scholey. "They worked on him for another 25 minutes before his family were there was nothing they could do, his heart had stopped an hour ago.

Darren Fitzpatrick, from Huddersfield, passed away in hospital on Saturday, August, 19 after suffering a sudden heart attack and subsequently a lack of oxygen to his brain. The dad-of-five was described by his daughter Sophie as "fit and healthy with no obvious health complications", although she said he was "a typical bloke and hadn't been to the doctors in ages!" Darren's death has come as a huge shock to the family, Sophie said: "It was a massive shock, he was here one day and then gone the next. There was nothing more the doctors could do. We all spent as much time at the hospital with him as we could and thankfully had a chance to say our final words to him. We are all absolutely heartbroken and just in shock, it was so unexpected."

Tony Bundy died from a stroke in June after his condition was not picked up using routine tests. The most-known symptoms such as a drooping face, arm weakness and difficulty speaking were not there. Now the Bundys, from Tullibody, Clackmannanshire, want to make more people aware of other signs to stop their tragedy happening to others. Father-of-four Tony was just 53 when he died. His widow, Selena said he was active and healthy, but had started to feel unwell over a period of several weeks. The symptoms got worse until one day, he collapsed. "He just felt different - he had cold sweats and really bad colour. Those were the main things that were happening. Tony collapsed while out shopping and was taken to hospital. He died after having a Basilar Artery Ischaemic Stroke - which has different symptoms to more common types of stroke.”

Angela Gillies, 51, was admitted to hospital for the procedure on August 18 but the following day was transferred to intensive care after suffering complications. The mum-of-two tragically passed away just two days later on August 20. Angela, from Inverness, suffered from fibromyalgia syndrome - a long-term condition which causes pain all over the body. As the Record reports, Angela was also due to celebrate her 52nd birthday this week and was set to marry the 'love of her life' Kevin Pratt on September 23. Angela's family, including her two sons, have been absolutely devastated by her death and have since paid tribute online. One of her sons, Alan, wrote: "I'm just so lost for words. Mum was my everything, my mentor, my best friend.”

A man who was on a walk close to Coniston Water yesterday (August 22) suddenly collapsed and died. Three Community First Responders attended the emergency after a member of the public administered CPR with the support of NWAS (North West Ambulance Service) over the phone. A spokesperson for Coniston Community First Responders said: "We immediately attached an AED and were able to deliver one shock. We then took over the CPR and administered Oxygen. "HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Service) and NWAS (North West Ambulance Service) paramedics arrived and we assisted with the continuing care of the gentleman, and supported his friend as best we could, who was with him at the time. Unfortunately, the man sadly did not make it. Our thoughts are with his family and friends." The incident happened behind Yewdale Cottage in Coniston village.

Scunthorpe postman's horn restored on BBC's Repair Shop after sudden cancer death

The family of a late Scunthorpe man were overwhelmed to have a horn he loved using for "practical jokes" restored on the BBC's Repair Shop. Peter Summers [63] was a postman in the area for 40 years, but was tragically taken ill in late 2022. He was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and sadly died just six weeks later. His brother and sister, Mark and Jenny Hatfield, appeared on the show to explain the story behind the interesting item. Speaking to host Jay Blades, Jenny told the team about how Peter was born deaf in one ear and often used the horn as a practical joke. Jenny said: "Peter was taken ill at the back end of last year very suddenly. He was diagnosed with cancer and it was very aggressive, he passed away very quickly. It was six weeks between us finding out and him passing away."

Bryan McSharry, chief executive of Moneycorp Europe, died suddenly last week, aged 55. Mr McSharry, son of former Fianna Fáil tánaiste and European Commissioner Ray MacSharry and brother of independent, formerly Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim Marc MacSharry, died at his home in Sandymount in Dublin on August 25th. The businessman, who began his career at Investec before taking up roles as head of treasury sales at Anglo Irish Bank and its successor, Irish Banking Resolution Corporation, helped to bring foreign exchange services company Moneycorp to Ireland in 2013 along with his former Anglo colleague Tiarnan O’Mahoney.

Tributes flow for doting young Cork dad after tragic incident in Cobh. Paying tribute to a "gentleman," family and friends said they will remember Sean as a "lovely man" who "always had a smile." On social media, friends and neighbours have been paying their condolences to his family, who have lost 'an absolute gentleman, he had a friendly smile for everyone' and a 'hard-working, devoted father'. Sean is believed to have suffered a possible, sudden medical emergency. However, Gardai are keeping an open mind until the result of a post-mortem, due to take place at Cork University Hospital. A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances following the death of a man in his 20s in the Ballyvoloon area of Cobh, Co. Cork on Sunday, 3rd September 2023. The incident occurred at around 8.30 pm.”

Man dies after sudden medical emergency in Cork city nightclub

A man died over the weekend after suffering a sudden medical emergency at a popular nightclub in Cork city centre. The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, when the man - believed to be aged in his 40s - collapsed while out with his friends in the Oliver Plunkett Street area of Cork. Gardai and emergency services personnel from the National Ambulance Service (NAS) rushed to attend the scene but could not revive the man, who was rushed to the nearby Mercy Hospital. Cork Beo quotes eyewitnesses as saying that paramedics made strenuous and prolonged efforts to resuscitate the man at the scene. The man was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. It's understood that the incident is being treated as a tragic, sudden health incident, foul play is not suspected and there will be a post-mortem to fully establish the cause of death.

I get the sense that the ages of these poor souls are getting younger and younger. Of course not all ages are given but reading these heartbreaking posts regularly I see a pattern emerging.
