A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.

Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot dead at 84

Gordon Lightfoot, Canada's answer to U.S. singer-songwriters who provided the soundtrack for baby boomers coming of age amid a countercultural revolution, died Monday, his publicist said. He was 84. Lightfoot died at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto of natural causes, publicist Victoria Lord said. On April 11, he announced the cancellation of his 2023 performance schedule in North America. A statement cited unspecified "health related issues," and it said he expected to recover.

Tim Bachman, the guitarist and vocalist of Canadian rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive, has died at 71. The musician's death was confirmed by his son, Paxton Bachman, via a Facebook post on Friday. Paxton shared that Tim — who played in BTO from 1973 until 1974, and reunited with the group a decade later — passed following complications with cancer 'throughout his brain.'

Salvatore in Montreal on March 28, 2023, following a valiant battle with cancer. Born in Guglionesi (Italy). He obtained a doctorate from Harvard University in 1980. He then began a career in teaching, at the Université de Montréal, at Champlain College and, until his retirement, at Concordia University, as a professor of Italian Studies; he left a body of work comprising 14 books and numerous articles in Italian, French and English, numerous conferences around the world and teaching that will have touched thousands of students. Champion and passionate researcher of the Italian community in Canada, he was one of its most eloquent voices for half a century. Donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

It is surrounded by his family that he cherished so much, that died in Montreal [Quebec], on April 18, 2023, at the age of 66, Dr. Francis Engel. From the obstetrics-gynecology department of LaSalle Hospital where he was appreciated and practiced since 1988. The family would like to wholeheartedly thank Dr. Claude Cyr and his palliative care team at the MUHC who helped us along, and more particularly Dr. John Storring and his hematology-oncology team for their encouragement and great professionalism throughout. long of these difficult treatments for Francis. And of course, all our friends and colleagues who over the past few months have accompanied, supported, nourished, consoled and replaced us at the last minute so that we can be at his side to fight this difficult battle.

Our dear Anne passed away into the loving arms of her Lord and Saviour on April 10, 2023. She leaves to mourn a wealth of wonderful friends and neighbours for whom she will always be remembered as a person who portrayed all the qualities of what a true friend really is. Anne was a dedicated teacher for thirty-five years with the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board. During that time, she touched the lives of many of her students and encouraged them to achieve to their full potential. Also, her example inspired many students to become educators. After she retired from teaching, Anne answered her second calling by joining The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a group that supports people in need. Her generosity and kindness shone through as she assisted regularly at the soup kitchen and behind the scenes contributed in multiple other ways to assist clients with their daily needs. She was a strong advocate for many. Anne's faith remained strong throughout her life and especially as she so courageously battled her fight against cancer. A special thank you is extended to the health care workers on 2C of Marianhill for their kind and gentle care of Anne. Also, Kelsey Graveline was instrumental in keeping Anne comfortable and bringing so much happiness and joy throughout Anne's final days. With heavy hearts we announce the untimely passing of our head of household Jim Gordon at Headwaters Health Care Centre Friday April 7, 2023, surrounded by love. He put up a short but determined battle of Cancer. He leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Lori Gordon and loving children and spouses Jennifer and Jason Bourne, Mary and Robb Buchanan and John and Katie Gordon. Greatly missed by many other family and friends. Jim was a pillar to the community for much of his life. Served proudly as a Dufferin County Paramedic for almost 30 years. He enjoyed his work and loved the community. Motorcycles were his passion and loved the open road. Jim and Lori would come together with friends and become Orangeville Valley Riders. He always enjoyed helping others, and the club put together a yearly ride to raise funds for Hospice Dufferin. The ridepoker run was a success and became a yearly fundraiser. The club managed to raise funds for 10 years.

Fred loved to be on the move, whether it was outdoors golfing, watching his favourite Boston Bruins, listening to his favourite tunes, he was always ready for a good time and lighting up the lives of everyone around him. Kathy and Fred met as young children and she knew from the very beginning that she was going to be his wife and in 1985 it became official that Kathy was the love of his life. Fred appreciated the things he had in life and loved to share those with the people he cared for most. Going without was not an option when you were in his presence. Fred was a man who did not shy away from hard work; after working in carpentry for 25 years, he retired to enjoy the fruits of his labour and spend his time making funny memories with his family and friends. Oak’s family was blessed with 88 hours and 45 minutes, before he went to his heavenly home on March 29th at 11:11am. Oak experienced holding hands with his mommy and daddy, hugs and kisses from his family, listening as his daddy sang him My Little Sunshine and being told “I love you” an uncountable amount of times. Oak is deeply loved by his mommy and daddy, his grandparents, his great-grandparents, his aunts and uncles, his cousins and many others. Oak will always remain his parents precious baby and they will hold him again in heaven one day.

Kevin was passionate about many sports and was a longtime curling member at the S.G.C.C. He golfed for years at both St. Clair Parkway (Mooretown) and Greenwood. He was a die-hard fan of the Mighty Chicago Bears, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Detroit Tigers. He was an avid guitar player and was well known for his strengths as a trivia buff. His friendship circle was strong and loyal. He will leave a huge void in many of the lives that he touched. RIP K. hello. the death of "charlie lacroix", the 19 year old girl in quebec (april 13) was the result of a fire. it was actually a pretty high profile accident in montreal, as a bunch of people died due to a fire in some sketchy air bnb building.. so yeah, best to remove her from the list, as it's not super fair to the family. obviously the majority of these youths dying suddenly are due to the vax, but this one was not!
