More Than a Million Americans "Missing" as US Endures a Crisis of Early Death
July 20, 2023
If the United States of America had the same mortality rates as other wealthy countries, more than 1 million people would have avoided death in 2021, a new study found. Researchers have termed these excess deaths the Missing Americans. "The number of Missing Americans in recent years is unprecedented in modern times," says Boston University epidemiologist Jacob Bor. "Think of people you know who have passed away before reaching age 65. Statistically, half of them would still be alive if the US had the mortality rates of our peers. The US is experiencing a crisis of early death that is unique among wealthy nations." While the COVID-19 pandemic created a global spike in mortality, the US's increase was even more severe when compared to other wealthy nations, including Canada, Australia, and the UK. It's also failing to recover in the same way as other Western countries. The new study reveals this mortality trend had already been increasing during the preceding four decades. This problem is significantly worse for minority groups, with mortality rates up to eight times higher on average for Native Americans. But it's not confined to minorities, with two-thirds of the Missing being White Americans. "By using an international benchmark, we show that Americans of all races and ethnicities are adversely affected by the US policy environment, which places a low priority on public health and social protections, particularly for low-income people," explains Bor. Bor and colleagues compared mortality data from the US to 21 other wealthy countries from 1933 to 2021. During World War II and its aftermath, the US had the lowest mortality rates in its wealthy country peer group, but from the 1980s, the number of Missing Americans steadily increased. By 2019 it reached 622,534 people. It then exceeded a million in the years since, "reflecting the catastrophic loss of life the United States experienced during the pandemic, far in excess of other wealthy nations."

Obamas' family chef found dead in pond on Martha's Vineyard, police say
July 24, 2023
The body of a missing paddleboarder recovered from a pond in Martha's Vineyard on Monday morning was an employee of former President Barack Obama, the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) said. Divers for the MSP Underwater Recovery Unit retrieved the body of 45-year-old Tafari Campbell at Edgartown Great Pond. “Tafari was a beloved part of our family. When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House --creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together," President Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama said in a statement. "In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter." The Obamas asked Campbell to continue working with them after they left the White House and he "generously agreed," they said in a statement.
Campbell was visiting Martha's Vineyard at the time of his death, police said. The Obamas were not at the home when the incident occurred, according to MSP. The victim's body was located by Massachusetts Environmental Police Officers, according to MSP. The underwater recovery unit retrieved the victim's body about 100 feet from the shore and 8 feet underwater, according to state police. The paddleboarder went missing in the pond on Sunday, but authorities suspended the search after several hours to "allow dive teams, flight crews, and other responders to re-equip and assess next steps" after they could not find the man, MSP said. The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit is investigating the incident for the Cape and Islands District and Edgartown Police.

Waking up this morning grateful to have received my first COVID vaccination last night. I didn’t want to get one for the longest time as I struggled with the guilt that others w/o antibodies or who are high risk may not have received one yet. But thanks to Momma DarHalli, a couple doctors and someone else I decided to do it. Two docs explained to me I was an idiot not to get it, lol that’s the tough medicine I needed to get it done!

The news came as a complete shock. According to two-year-old Panache's examination prior to entering the facility he had "no ongoing medical issues" and was reported to be "healthy" and "developing appropriately" "There's something wrong when a government can come into a person's home and drag their children out based on an anonymous phone call when they're healthy children, no broken bones, no marks on their body," Joseph's lawyer Vic Feazell said. “They are taken away for months until one of them dies and they suddenly just close an investigation and drop it."

Brevard County, Florida – It is with great sadness and a very heavy heart that I share with you this morning, the loss of one of our Brevard County Sheriff’s Office family members, Lieutenant Todd Maddox, who late yesterday afternoon lost his battle with cancer as he passed away at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. Todd was not only an incredible member of our team, but he was also an amazing family man, great cop, and a great friend to so many of us. Throughout his courageous battle, Todd never let on that he was hurting, but instead came to work each and every day with a smile on his face, doing the job he loved so much and serving with his BCSO family to protect our community. Todd began his career with our agency in 1990 and climbed through the ranks to the position of Lieutenant where he proudly served our agency until his brief retirement in 2020. I say brief retirement because Todd rejoined the Sheriff’s Office the very next day as a School Resource Deputy doing what he loved so much…wearing the badge and protecting others. Todd would eventually rotate back out to Patrol Services as a Deputy Sheriff in our Canaveral Precinct where he remained until his passing.
