Senate sergeant-at-arms during Capitol riot dies
June 27, 2022
Michael Stenger, 71, the Senate sergeant-at-arms who oversaw security in the upper chamber during the Capitol riot, died Monday morning, according to multiple reports. The cause of his death was not immediately clear, but reporters from Fox News and Politico shared news of his passing. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) also tweeted about it. Stenger held the post from 2018 to 2021 and stepped down the day after the Jan. 6 attack.
"There is an opportunity to learn lessons from the events of January 6th. Investigations should be considered as to funding and travel of what appears to be professional agitators. First Amendment rights should always be considered in conjunction with professional investigations," he said in an opening statement before a Senate committee last year.
Stenger had joined the team for the Senate sergeant-at-arms in 2011 following a multidecade career with the Secret Service. Then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) nominated him as Senate sergeant-at-arms, and he was confirmed unanimously.
McConnell "requested and received" his resignation the day after a mob of violent rioters stormed the Capitol, Axios reported. Stenger received fierce criticism from members of Congress over his handling of security on the day of the riot.
Ultimately, it took over four hours for the National Guard to arrive on the scene that day, and some have questioned whether Stenger and his onetime House counterpart, Paul Irving, could have called for backup sooner, WUSA9 reported.
In response to the security breach on Jan. 6, Congress passed a raft of procedural reforms to quash any confusion in the rules about what authority Congress's security team had to call for reinforcements. President Joe Biden signed that legislation into law.

Dad-to-Be Dies of 'Extraordinarily Rare' Cancer 3 Weeks After First ER Visit
June 22, 2022
When New York couple Matthew and Graziella "Gracie" Robertson found out that they were pregnant with their first child, a baby girl, shortly after getting married in September 2021, they were overjoyed.
"The second I got the positive test, Matthew was out there looking at little baby shoes and baby clothes," Gracie tells PEOPLE. "He was so, so excited to be a dad."
But as the baby's due date drew closer, Matthew started to feel like something was off. In May, he started complaining that he felt tired all the time and that his back was hurting, but Gracie says it "was all easily explained away."
"We would go on trips, and he was building things for the baby," she says. "So of course you're going to be tired, and of course your back's going to hurt."
At the time, the couple couldn't have predicted that what Matthew was actually dealing with was epithelioid angiosarcoma, a rare cancer affecting the blood vessels. It eventually caused his death at age 30 on June 6, just three weeks after his first emergency room visit and five weeks before his baby girl's due date.
"I feel sad that she won't get to have her dad the way that she deserves," says Gracie, 29. "I'm sad that he doesn't get to be the girl dad that he was so excited about being. I know she'll bring so much joy and happiness into our family during this time of heartache, but it's bittersweet because he should be here."

Newlywed dies of rare blood vessel cancer 3 weeks after he started noticing symptoms
June 23, 2022
Matthew Robertson was "so, so excited to be a dad," especially to a baby girl, his wife Gracie told People. The New York couple learned they were pregnant with their first child shortly after their wedding in September 2021, Graziella "Gracie" Robertson told the magazine. Amid the excitement, her husband started to feel tired all the time, but the couple chalked it up to travel and baby prep, she said.
But his fatigue worsened, his back ached, and at an annual doctor's appointment in May, his blood work showed signs of illness. Less than a month later, the 30-year-old newlywed was dead. Roberston had epithelioid angiosarcoma, a rare cancer that affects the blood vessels. He died three weeks after his first visit to the emergency room, where doctors found lesions on his liver, spleen, and back.

Elizabeth City, N.C. — A 24-year-old man who was in the Albemarle District Jail died suddenly last Friday, the Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office said. A spokeswoman for the sheriff's office said William Adam Seagle was found laying on the ground on June 24 at 10:11 p.m. He wasn't breathing, she said. By 10:12 p.m., detention officers and other inmates had moved him to a common area of the jail and the officers had started trying to save his life.
Medics and the fire department were the next groups who made it to the jail to try and help Seagle. Medics took over where the detention officers left off. They took him to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead about an hour later. The sheriff's office spokeswoman said they're still investigating what caused the man's death, but at this point, they don't suspect foul play. Seagle was in jail on charges of failure to appear in court for traffic offenses.
Questions remain over sudden death of Tampa attorney
June 21, 2022
Tampa, Fla. - LeesaAnn Dodds is still in shock over the sudden death of her best friend and law partner, Lisa Westberry, 38. "She was a good friend, she was a wonderful attorney, she was a fabulous mom," Dodds said tearfully.
"Everybody that finds out about Lisa’s passing says two things: one, 'I’m sorry for your loss,' and two, 'What happened?'" Dodds said. "I wish I can tell people what happened. I want to know what happened."
On the evening of June 4, Westberry was found dead in her bedroom of her Ruskin home. Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office reports show her that her lifeless body was discovered by her 13-year-old son. Records reveal there was a bloody wound near her mouth – one deputy describe it as "a gunshot wound on Lisa Westberry’s mouth" while another responding deputy called it a "possible gunshot wound." But no gun was found near the body.
However, a detective on the scene had a much different take. He believed it looked more like the gash could have come from "one of the family guard dogs and potentially passed from natural causes or a drug possible overdose," the report indicated.
The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner says the case is under criminal investigation and cause and manner of death is still pending. "It’s not normal for a 38-year-old woman who is in normal health and has no reason to pass away to just be gone," Dodds told FOX 13. "It was like she was there and then she was gone."

Dr. Michael D. Calabrese, 73, provided health care with a spectrum of services
June 26, 2022
When a two-alarm fire ripped through Elmwood Parish Commons in November 2007, causing more than $5 million damage, Dr. Michael D. Calabrese, who bought the office building a year earlier and had a passion for architectural design, saw the disaster as an opportunity.
“I’m going to stick with it and turn it around again,” he promised Buffalo News reporter Gene Warner.
Bringing the former English Evangelical Church of the Redeemer at Elmwood Avenue and West Ferry Street, back as an Elmwood Village landmark took longer than he expected.
It was nearly two years before he could bring his medical practice, Medical Care of Western New York at Buffalo, back into the building.
“A different owner could have looked at it and said, ‘That’s a total loss, let’s (demolish) it,” Justin Azzarella, then executive director of the Elmwood Village Association, told News business reporter Matt Glynn in 2009. “We’re thrilled that it’s coming back online.”
Dr. Calabrese explained to Glynn that he rebuilt the office space in an unconventional way to provide a feeling of tranquility.
“The object here is the serenity,” he said, “when they’re in pain and injured, to let the patient breathe.”
Dr. Calabrese, who took a holistic approach to treatment, died unexpectedly June 21. He was 73.
