CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Note: Quebec will be included in next week’s compilation as our research team plays catch-up.

He loved to teach students and residents. Scott was always pushing the boundaries of how things 'have always been done’ and enjoyed challenging his students to look for new approaches. He embraced new technology and was a strong advocate for ensuring that the Department of Anesthesia was always cutting edge. Scott had a strong interest in regional anesthesia and was always looking for ways to improve post-operative analgesia for our surgical patients. Scott was also a caring father and raised 3 brilliant children. Scott’s loss will be deeply felt by his husband. Even though their time was short, it will last forever. April 23, 2023
London - Anyone who knew Trevor Alexander Marshall (aka Marshall Alexander) would not be surprised to hear that he passed away in his sleep on 4/20. Marshall rolled a “nat one” on his nap and never woke up – he should have really learned to set an alarm. It was his wry sense of humour you see and his “too soon” timing, a couple of the many things he was infamous for. Marshall (he hated the name Trevor) had a number of health problems the last few years but survived them (up till now anyway) with the help of his family named above along with his cousins. He had a huge heart and welcoming presence, always inviting everyone into share his home. He was a genuinely caring friend and he will be deeply, deeply missed. Thunder-Bay - It is with the saddest of hearts that we share the passing of our loving husband and father, Peter Michael Grant on April 4th, 2023. Peter left this world surrounded by the love of his family after a year-long battle with cancer. The only thing that beat fishing and hunting was his family. He relished his role as a dad and every moment spent with his children on the phone or in person made him happy and he was so proud of all they had achieved. Being their dad was the best thing in his life and nothing filled him with more pride. He loved all his kids; the two he was given and the two his children gifted him with. Donations in Peter’s memory can be made to the Northern Cancer Fund.

We, the family of William Bruce Florian, regretfully announce the passing of our beloved brother on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by family and close friends. He thoroughly enjoyed his career in diagnostic imaging at the VG Hospital and I was fortunate, as his brother, to have met many individuals he both worked with and on, who always spoke well of his work and amicable demeanor. Children were especially comfortable with his assistance during their medical procedures with the large machinery of the magical X-ray. No matter what conversation we had, Bruce always ended it with, “Love you Brother”. I did and will always forever and ever.

My son’s barely 60 year old teacher died suddenly over the weekend here in BC. She was having a minor nasal surgery and apparently developed an infection. It is a total shock and so suspicious. She was an avid skier and cyclist and a beautiful human being. Her nearly 100 year old father died recently in her home and she is survived by her mother (nearly 100 as well and she also cared for her in her home) and 4 children. She should’ve lived to nearly 100 as well.
This school has lost two teachers since the vax roll out. The other was 40 and died home alone from a migraine brain blood clot--never showed up for work!!!
