A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Lidka Maria Schuch Blazej, 65
June 16, 2023
On June 14, 2023, Lidka Schuch, 65, of Beaverton, Ontario, passed away peacefully after a short illness. A native of Poland, she immigrated to Canada in 1982, and quickly became a part of the art scene in Toronto and later in Halifax, creating inspired, one-of-a-kind wearable art for enthusiastic fashionistas. In the early 1990's, after her return to Toronto, she went back to school and mastered digital art. She became a recognized computer graphics educator and launched her own school, Studio L. This led to a long career at George Brown College, where she taught and mentored young and upcoming graphic designers. Her breadth of knowledge, energy and humour were loved and appreciated by all of her students, many of whom became life-long friends and colleagues. In 2007 she moved to Beaverton with her partner Honza, where she designed a “garden of delights” where admiring friends enjoyed many exciting soirees, filled with music and laughter. It was also here where she opened the online company FABartonstuff, which offered a huge collection of colourful leisurewear. She touched many with her indomitable spirit and left us way too soon.

From GoFundMe:
Over the past months, Joy endured countless sophisticated and cutting-edge treatments. By her own admission, none were more healing than the tender and vigilant care from the nurses at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Joy's wishes were that any donations in her memory be made to support these underpaid "unsung heroes" who are members of the Ontario Nurses Association's Local 097.

God’s plan was to have him as an angel all along, and in the short amount of time that Alonzo was here on earth, he touched the hearts of many, most of whom he was not able to meet in person, but now will be able to meet in spirit. He will always be in our hearts, he will always be our baby boy, and he will be deeply missed and loved forever.

Forever loving, and forgiving. Gave the sweetest hugs. Understood the depth and realm of humanity, unlike anyone else. An elegant old soul, that left us too soon.

June 6, 2023
Peacefully and surrounded by loved ones, Patrick Joseph Kelly passed away suddenly but on his terms at Bluewater Health Sarnia, on Monday, June 5, 2023 at the age of 67. Dad gave his family 15 amazing ‘bonus years’ after defying the odds in 2008 and achieving his goal of walking all of his daughters down the aisle and meeting his grandkids, typical of his fighting Irish nature. Pat was a gentle, patient, humble and kind man who was so grateful for his amazing group of friends and family who were always a great support to him and his family. Pat took great joy in sports - watching and coaching his daughters in hockey and baseball and playing hockey and baseball for the Hahns, the Sparrows and the Stingers were highlights for him. Pat was the life of the party and though he could light up a dance floor and play air guitar like no one else, he was also a deeply wise and philosophical man who enjoyed discussing the deeper meaning of life with his loved ones. Donations in Pat’s memory may be made to the Epilepsy Southwestern Ontario.

Mike Caslin, 51
June 5, 2023
Burlington – The sudden death of Paul Richard Caslin (Mike/Cazzy) left a giant void in everyone’s universe, because when you had his love and loyalty, you had it for life. He had the biggest heart for those lucky enough to be a part of his inner circle. Born in Bury, England and a master of sarcastic one-liners, he was honest, blunt, kind and loving with a killer sense of humour. The last 10 years were purely devoted to his boys. Mike would always give in to their pleas to go to the park “just for a little while daddy.” Because he was a big kid at heart, he made every weekend an adventure, playing video games, soccer, baseball, water guns, nerf guns, hover boarding, go-karting, golfing or swimming. He was taken so suddenly, and the world feels flatter without him.

She put on an extremely brave front and protected her family to the end. Betty Ann’s door was always open for a coffee and visit from her siblings, sisters in law, nieces, cousins, aunts and uncles, children and grandchildren. She loved to play sports, making many friends through Ladies Volleyball in the winter months and Ladies Slow Pitch in the summer, playing for 25 years, during which she got the nickname “BA”.
