A note from our lead Canada researcher:

As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.

There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher—perhaps five times higher—than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.

Ontario hockey player Sean Hartman, 17, died on Sept. 27, 2021 -- 33 days after receiving the Pfizer vaccine -- but the cause of his death was listed as “unascertained."

Canada now has 400 reported deaths and more than 10,000 serious injuries following people receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, but Health Canada indicates it has confidence in vaccinations to battle coronavirus variants. However, for families behind those numbers, it’s not about statistics. “Evidence indicates that the benefits of COVID-19 vaccines continue to outweigh the risks of the disease,” Health Canada states in its new adverse reaction update. “Health Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), the provinces and territories, and manufacturers continue to closely monitor the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. We’ll respond to any safety issues right away and will inform Canadians about any risks that arise in Canada.” But Dan Hartman, father of 17-year-old Ontario hockey player Sean Hartman who died 33 days after receiving the Pfizer vaccine after being assessed in hospital for a rash, sore shoulder and rings around his eyes, said he’s hopeful the new numbers encourage governments to drill down on ensuring vaccine safety.

Ottawa - It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of James (Jamie) Stephen Kissick, at his home, surrounded by love, on January 26, 2023. Jamie did not want to characterize his cancer illness as a battle but, there is no question that, in the words of Tom Petty, he “went down swingin’.” He took every opportunity to embrace each aspect of a life well lived. After receiving his medical degree from Queen’s University, Jamie began his career in London, Ontario where he had a mixed practice of Emergency and Family Medicine. While providing medical coverage for a local soccer team, his interest turned to sport medicine which led to further training and a shift to practice in this area. Perhaps his deepest passion was Paralympic Sport. This began with a role as team doctor for the Canadian Para-Ice Hockey team and an amazing seven years travelling the world with them to Paralympic and World Championship competitions.

Michael as he is best known to his friends and family had a soft spoken voice and calm demeanour that put everyone he knew and met at ease, but lurking behind that devilish grin was a profound mind and a witty sense of humor. He kept his athletic sleek physique throughout his life, eating well, exercising, hiking, cycling, sailing, waterskiing to name a few of his regular activities. Michael has been blessed with a lot of incredible people in his life and together they all made his last days a beautiful experience.

Felix Taylor, 74

Napanee, Ont. - Passed away on Tuesday, January 24th, 2023. He passed at home in his bed beside his wife peacefully in his sleep, exactly as he wished he would. He succumbed to heart failure. He was recruited by the world-renowned Byron Lee and became one of his Dragonaires. Felix embarked upon a great adventure and left Kingston, Jamaica and joined his long life friend in Canada in 1967. He played with many bands over the years, too many to list here and in some circles was considered one of the best trombone players in the world. He collaborated with local artists and performed at many community events, always supporting the love of music whenever he was able. In addition to the trombone and flugel horn, Felix played the steel pan, the piano, the guitar, various hand drums and just about anything else that he could make a joyful sound with. His passion for music and his family never waned and was as strong at his passing as it was during the rest of his blessed time on earth.

David Charles Onley, 72

Toronto - It is with profound sadness, but with rejoicing hope, that the family of David Charles Onley, C.M., O.Ont, announce his sudden passing at Sunnybrook Hospital on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at the age of 72. After a brief illness, David passed peacefully surrounded by his wife and three sons, and entered his Eternal Home to meet his Lord and Saviour. David contracted polio at the age of 3, resulting in partial paralysis of his limbs, and years of childhood surgeries. David’s family moved to Scarborough in order to find the necessary expert medical care required to treat his battle with polio. Using leg braces and a cane, David studied political science at the University of Toronto Scarborough (B.A., 1975), choosing the campus because it was accessible. At UTSC, he served as student council president and started the first campus radio station. David’s career began with many closed doors, as businesses were wary of hiring someone with a physical disability. Never one to give up, he forged his own path with the writing of his book, Shuttle: A Shattering Novel of Disaster in Space, in 1981, launching David into a 25-year career in radio and television. In 2007, David was appointed as the 28th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, serving as the Queen’s representative until 2014, and was the first with a visible disability. He established accessibility as the overarching theme of his mandate, which he defined as “that which enables people to achieve their full potential.” In 2019, he led the Ontario government’s review of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act (AODA), making strong recommendations towards an accessible Ontario. In 2014, David joined the University of Toronto Scarborough as a Senior Lecturer, teaching the history of the Vice Regal Office and the politics of disability. He found much joy in seeing the inclusivity and social consciousness of the young adults he taught, and continued teaching and advocating until his death. David’s quick wit, dry sense of humour, and deep faith in God will be missed by his family and friends.

Elaine Margaret Bennett, 75

Elaine Margaret Bennett passed away the morning of Saturday, January 21st, 2023, at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in North York, Ontario. She was 75 years old. Mom was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumor in the spring of 2021, right in the middle of COVID lockdowns, isolations, and strict travel requirements. She had her first surgery in St. John’s, Newfoundland, followed up with radiation and chemotherapy. She came through the surgery and treatments with amazing strength and healed quickly. In October 2022 her glioblastoma tumor had grown, and it was recommended that it be removed. Mom made the difficult decision to undergo brain surgery in hopes of prolonging her time with us. Mom made it through the surgery and with the support of Aunt. She slowly recuperated at home. She travelled to Ontario to continue her healing to stay with Aunt in late November. Mom found the recuperation from this surgery to be difficult and she experienced more side effects that were hard for her to cope with. Between November 27th and December 11, 2022, Mom’s mobility and speech deteriorated rapidly. She had a serious fall on December 11th, breaking her hip. She was admitted to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center and underwent hip replacement surgery. Mom’s condition had deteriorated to the point that she was unable to leave the hospital. With the support of the Oncologist, who assessed Mom’s cancer prognosis we made the decision to have her moved to palliative care. Sunnybrook has an exceptional palliative care unit. Mom was made comfortable and carefully monitored. She continued to decline until it was her time to go. None of us wanted her to linger in the state she was in. Being unable to walk, move around or talk was very hard for her and hard for us to watch. We are sad she is gone, but find comfort in her being free from the confines of this disease.

Passed away on January 26th, 2023, at the Hinton Hospital after a valiant battle with heart failure. After a brief time in the Army, he worked in various mines in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and British Columbia before settling at Cardinal River/Teck Coal Ltd in Hinton. He held many heavy equipment positions over 30+ years there but enjoyed the blasting position most as he shared countless laughs with his best friends. His health forced him into early retirement, but he had no intentions on sitting around idle. He found great pleasure in his skate sharpening shop at the local Rec Centre for many years as it gave him the opportunity to converse with anyone who came to his window, including the children at the daycare.

Miranda gifted her family with 28 wonderful years before having to experience her last year bravely fighting a disease that eventually took her to the next step in her journey. Miranda’s passions were baking, gardening, golfing, camping & she treasured the family fishing trips … until she had to hold what she caught near her face for a picture. Even in her sickness, Miranda took charge of organizing the whole family to enjoy what would unknowingly be her last Summer at Uncle & Aunts’ cabin. She couldn’t enjoy it like every other year, but she did her best to partake in some fishing, fires & cards. Never far from Miranda’s side was her dog Airabelle. They shared an unconditional love that warmed our hearts. Miranda & her twin sister grew up very shy, always having the comfort of one another. Holding hands during their first soccer games certainly handicapped their talents. Miranda graduated in 2011 with a Business scholarship. She got her Bachelor of Commerce at Grant MacEwan University. After a short stint living in Grande Prairie, she was lucky enough to accept a surprise job opening in Hardisty, becoming GCS Energy Services’ very young Payroll Administrator. She later took on more responsibility doing full accounting tasks for related companies Home Hardware and 3 Hotels. She was a smart cookie, finding ways to put her earnings to work as a very young Landlord. Miranda’s need for structure & organization was wonderful for the family.

Born in Caprafico, Abruzzo, Italy she later emigrated with her parents and sister and they settled in Calgary to form roots. Getting her first taste of the entrepreneurial spirit, she joined her sister in helping their father with odd-jobs surrounding his real estate business. Lillian received her certification from the Alberta Apprenticeship board in June 1977, when she officially began her career as a celebrated Beautician. Lillian was also so proud to have worked with the Calgary Board of Education since 2006. There she actively shared the career and passion she loved so dearly, all while bringing her knowledge and experiences to the next generation of students interested in Cosmetology. Hearing stories of how “Mrs. Niro inspires me,” was exactly why she was so proud of the work she did. Each semester, she would often share the poem “The Girl in the Glass” with her students, encouraging them to be true to themselves. Bob also worked off the farm as a Brand Inspector and at various other jobs including oil patch careers, eventually working his way up to becoming Frac Manager at Sangel. Dennis McMillan, 74

Dennis passed suddenly while on vacation in Daytona Beach Florida on January 13, 2023 with family at his bed side. He had spent his last week golfing with friends, walking on the beach and enjoying dining out at their favorite spots. He studied pharmacy at the University of Manitoba and graduated in 1970. He worked for Orville Wagner in Portage for ten years. His main wish was that he would own and operate a pharmacy in a small prairie town. This wish came true when he and Marilyn purchased the pharmacy in Carberry and successfully ran it from 1979 until 2007 as McMillan Pharmacy. Dennis and his wife enjoyed travelling on holidays. Some of the places they enjoyed were Cozumel (10 years), New Zealand, Ireland, Germany and Florida. Dennis liked the cottage at Delta Beach that his parents purchased in 1957. Dennis’ memory to Central Plains Cancer Services.

Reinhard Dueck, age 71, died suddenly at his residence in Winnipeg, MB, on Sunday, December 11, 2022. Reinhard grew up on a dairy farm in Kleefeld, Manitoba. He left home early and lived in several different places in western Canada. He had various careers including lifeguard, denturist, owned a delivery service, a car detailing business and worked in the oilfields. Reinhard loved swimming and stayed physically fit all his life, making good use of the YMCA facilities. He spent his final years back in Winnipeg keeping up with current affairs and spending time with close friends and family.

Barbara Aletta 'Lettie' Martens (Kriebel) of Winnipeg passed away, January 4th, 2023 at Riverview Medical Centre with her sister Sandra and close friend her side. She attended Kildonan East for High School, where she also pursued and passed her hairstyling course. Hairstyling became a passion, working in the field for 45 years. Being known as the chatty one, she truly loved her work and her clients, many of them becoming close friends. Her true passion however, was her family. Her most precious time, however, would have been spent with family, watching her grandchildren grow, being a supportive sister, mother, aunt and friend; she leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories. Her light will be forever missed. Black-Point - It is with broken hearts that the family announces the passing of Kathy (Petersen) Spence, with her family by her side, at the West Parry Sound Health Centre, on Thursday, January 12, 2023. Age 65 years. Kathy was born to be an educator. Her favourite toy was her chalkboard - teaching her older sister and younger brother their letters and numbers. She continued in Fredericton where she received a Bachelor of Education from Saint Thomas University. She then took summer courses to complete her Master’s in Education from UNB. Her teaching career started in Spanish Harlem, NYC, and then took her to Brampton Ontario, teaching in several Peel Board schools, progressing from teacher to vice principal through to principal. She retired in December 2020 from the Near North District School Board after a 34-year career where she loved her job and mentoring many younger educators looking to move forward in their career paths. Myrna loved going to bingo especially at St. Mary’s Entertainment Centre and in recent months playing online and radio bingo with Cheryl. She was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Team Canada Juniors and especially her beloved Toronto Blue Jays. She especially enjoyed going to watch games in person in both Toronto and Montreal . Myrna and her daughter loved to travel together and visited New York , Toronto , Niagara Falls , Montreal , Nova Scotia and had many shopping trips to New Hampshire , Maine and Massachusetts. Myrna’s favourite place to visit was her mother’s birthplace on Prince Edward Island, where she would visit yearly.

Surrounded by the family she loved with all of her heart, Monica Julie Park passed away peacefully at Western Memorial Hospital’s ICU on January 19th. Julie lived her life with so much love for her family, especially her four boys and their precious children. She will be missed so much in all their lives. Unfortunately her health issues meant she couldn’t spend as much time with them as she would have liked in the last year, but Max was always there and constantly by her side to provide her with everything she could possibly need or want. Blaine Henry Bezanson, 70, of Kingston, sadly passed away suddenly on January 24, 2023. Blaine worked in the Mess Hall at CFB Greenwood when the Cadets were in camp. He later worked in the Pavement and Grounds section, from laborer to foreman before retiring in 2007. Either listening to music or performing in several dance bands all over the province, Blaine absolutely loved music. He started playing when he was 19 years old and continued up to recent years.

He was a charitable man who would often help others in need whether it was donating his time, talent, or treasure. He never backed down from a challenge or obstacle and was always able to find a solution to any problem he faced. His favorite past-times were experimental cooking (no recipe required), touring around the backroads in his truck with Sheila by his side, hunting, fishing, driving his ATV out on the trails, going for coffee with his dear friend, Mark and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Robert worked at Harley Cox & Sons for 12 years and The Town of Shelburne Public Works until his retirement. He had fond memories of playing sports especially his number one sport of baseball. He played on the Yarmouth Dairy Queen and Clyde River Ball Teams for a number of years. Robert had a kind and very outgoing personality. He was always willing to lend a hand and enjoyed his time volunteering at the Sandy Point Light House. He loved to talk and tell stories, going for drives, adventures and eating out at restaurants. He enjoyed wood working, making lighthouses and bird feeders.

Dale was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, who will be deeply missed. He worked in construction his entire life. He loved the woods. Having cut the majority of the trails in Falmouth, he loved being out on the ATV but most of all he loved spending time in his garage. That was his happy place and where he spent his final moments. Doug began his trucking career at the age of 16 years when he began driving for G.W. Holmes Trucking until 2003 when he joined A.W. Leil Cranes where he was employed until 2009 when he retired due to ill health. Doug was most appreciative of his many friends and family, who on any day of the week, would stop by and pick him up for an adventure. Doug looked forward to the summer, where keeping his lawn immaculate and his pool in top condition was a priority.

Mervyn Szuba died peacefully on January 23, 2023 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon of cancer, surrounded by his loving family. He obtained his barber diploma in Regina and opened his first shop in the basement of the Ritz Hotel in 1969. He continued to groom the heads of men and women in several downtown Saskatoon locations until 2021. Mervyn and his partner were original board members of SOMA (Saskatchewan Original Music Association) and they were proud that their bands played original music to their many fans.

Andy, a long-time acquaintance of mine died in his sleep nine days ago. I still haven't found a death notice. All I've found is some condolences on his Facebook account. Makes me wonder how many sudden deaths are going unreported.
