CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
In Alberta, two musicians and an artist “died suddenly”:
Reported on January 11:
Dave Alcock, 47
January 11, 2023
Today would have been Dave Alcock's 48th birthday. He passed away unexpectedly on January 1 - and his passing has been felt deeply by those of us that knew him and were lucky enough to play and/or record with him during his time at Sundae Sound. Dave's probably best known as a drummer for his tenure with Chixdiggit; he engineered their first LP and joined the band for their next two records, touring extensively with them. Even after his time as their drummer, Dave continued to work closely with the band on their recordings. From when he started at Sundae Sound to the time when he closed up shop and went back to school in 2011 (this time to pursue a Diploma of Broadcasting Systems Tech), Dave worked with an amazing range of artists - his Discogs credits include Ian Tyson, Jann Arden, the Primrods, Mico, National Dust, Corb Lund, James Keelaghan and Oscar Lopez, the Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir, the Corta Vita... it's hard to pick up a CD that came out of this city in the 2000's that doesn't have his name on it. Donations in Dave's memory can be made directly to www.buddyup.ca with the Centre for Suicide Prevention.

Jack Jamieson
December 31, 2022
Thousands of musicians might not have personally known Calgary's Jack Jamieson, who passed away earlier this week, but they revered his work. For organists from around the world, Calgary was the home of the Carthy Organ, an instrument housed inside Jack Singer Concert Hall that transformed it into a kind of musical shrine for a certain group of musicians - organists - who would travel from around North America to perform at the Calgary Organ Festival finals inside the concert hall. This week, Calgary's performing arts community mourned the passing of a man who made so many of them sound so much better.

October 1, 2022
Smart, beautiful, immensely talented and so very kind to every being she encountered, Laura Ashton Saik, our “Lola”, passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2022 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 32 years. An artist of many genres, a fashion maven and a spell-binding storyteller, “Lola” was a force of nature! She found beauty in the most obscure places, and she had the power to convince you of the same. She travelled near and far spontaneously and she sought and found adventure everywhere she went. She could not be contained. We were all so privileged to be her family for the brief ‘moment’ we had with her.

March 2, 2023
Master Warrant Officer (Ret’d) Blair Randell Hart - It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and brother at his home in Embrun, On. on 20 February 2023. In his youth, Blair was well known throughout the Scouting community, achieving both the Queen Scout Award and a Silver Duke of Edinburgh award. Blair later joined The Lincoln and Welland Regiment before transferring to the Military Police Branch of the regular Canadian Army, thereby combining his two great ambitions, that of being a professional soldier and becoming a Police Officer. During his 40 years of dedicated service to Canada, Blair served in numerous locations including with the Canadian Embassy in New Delhi, India as well as tours in both Bosnia and Afghanistan before retiring in 2021 as a Master Warrant Officer to take on a position with Service Canada. Not being one to sit around twiddling his thumbs, when not working or spending time with his family, Blair maintained his dedication to Scouting by becoming first a leader of Scout Troops then later more senior positions. Having realized that he had achieved all he could with Scouting, Blair went onto become a Mason with Seven Star Lodge in Alliston, On. and then a Shriner. Blair’s dedication to his community, country and family are well known to anyone who was fortunate enough to meet him.

Frank Thomson of Black Diamond, Alberta, was born on March 12, 1955, in Turner Valley, Alberta passed away suddenly on the evening of February 23, 2023, at the age of 67, at his ranch near Black Diamond, Alberta. Frank was fortunate to have had many incredible adventures. A favourite few that he often reminisced about are: hunting with his brother Lorne and many close friends throughout his life, guiding hunters in British Columbia, competing in the bulldogging events in the FCA and Chinook Rodeo Associations and finally, the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association, until a leg injury forced him to quit. During his rodeo career with the CPRA, Frank qualified for the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton, Alberta, competed in the Calgary Stampede, and earned a spot on the Team Wrangler Rodeo competition in Scottsdale, Arizona. After quitting bulldogging, he fell in love with team roping, which allowed him to train horses and help teach roping to anyone who cared to learn. Frank enjoyed helping and mentoring people and the many kids who wanted to learn to ride or rope. He especially loved helping the younger Thomson boys and a few other kids learn to bulldog. He was so proud of their achievements in the rodeo world, as his dad and uncles were proud of him when he ventured out into the world of rodeo himself.
