Tributes to ‘pioneer’ gynaecologist who died during BA flight on birthday trip to Nice

Tributes have been paid to a top gynaecologist who died on a British Airways flight to the south of France with her husband. Professor Linda Cardozo, a professor of urogynaecology and consultant gynaecologist at King's College Hospital, London, has been described by her employer as a 'true pioneer'. Her family said that after having health issues in previous months, Prof Cardozo was getting better, and had been heading to Nice for a week's break on Thursday, September 21. She had been alongside her husband Stuart Hutcheson when they both fell asleep, but when the plane landed Prof Cardozo did not wake up. The emergency services were called to the plane, which had landed under the call sign BA 348, but despite the best efforts of medics nothing could be done to save her. In a statement given to the Times her family said that most other passengers had already left the plane by the time it was discovered she had passed away. Prof Cardozo was awarded an OBE in 2014 for services to urogynaecology and women's health, and has also received lifetime achievement awards from International Continence Society and the British Society of Urogynaecology. She also served as president of the International Urogynaecological Association, European Urogynaecological Association, Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Women's Health and Section of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Influential ‘Garry’s Mod’ modder Dave “Dav0r” Hunt has died aged 35

Garry’s Mod modder Dave Hunt, also known as “Dav0r”, has passed away at the age of 35. The news was shared on social media and in Facepunch Studios‘ Discord server by his friends. Hunt was the designer and developer of the Tool Gun, an item that let Garry’s Mod players wield different functions in the sandbox Source engine mod with one tool. In essence, it is a revolver with an LCD screen strapped to the top of the barrel with ribbon cable. Former Facepunch Studios community manager Hezzy broke the news to players with “the heaviest of hearts” and praised Hunt’s “unique brand of humour”. A memorial service will be held for the community in October.

Tributes have been paid to racing driver and team owner Dan Kirby who was a regular on the touring car circuit. Father-of-two Mr Kirby, who founded the Trade Price Cars Racing team in Chelmsford, died on Tuesday. His team competed in the 2019 and 2020 British Touring Car Championships (BTCC) seasons before he focused on a career behind the wheel. Friend and fellow driver Michael Crees described him as a "good pal and a great dad". A spokesperson for the BTCC posted on social media platform X and said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of former BTCC driver and team owner, Dan Kirby.”

The Bishop of Argyll & The Isles, Dr Keith Riglin, has died after a short illness, the Scottish Episcopal Church has announced. Dr Riglin, who was 66, died on Sunday, with his family beside him, at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley. In 2012, he was appointed Chaplain of King’s College, London, a post he held until 2021, during which time he also served as Assistant Dean (2017-20) and Vice-Dean (2020-21). From 2016 to 2019, he was a visiting lecturer in the university’s department of theology and religious studies; he remained a visiting Research Fellow until his death.

Singer had worked at Heidelberg for more than 24 years, and had forged deep connections with colleagues and customers during his time at the manufacturer. Heidelberg UK managing director Ryan Miles expressed the firm’s profound shock and sadness at his unexpected passing, and paid tribute to Singer’s many qualities. He said: “We are deeply saddened by the sudden and unexpected death of Mark. He passed away after suffering a heart attack whilst on holiday in Portugal, sadly way too young being only 57.”

A nine-year-old girl died just days after being sent home from hospital with what doctors believed was tonsillitis. Little Riya Hirani was actually battling a Strep A infection amid a national outbreak and suffered a cardiac arrest the following evening. She passed away five days later, MyLondon reports. A coroner yesterday concluded her life could have been saved. A court heard how Riya, from Stanmore, North West London, had a fever, red throat, and difficulty getting her words out for three days in December 2022. After advice from NHS 111, her parents took her to Northwick Park Hospital (NPH), in Harrow, where the senior house officer decided she was "not very sick". The youngster was discharged with a diagnosis of viral tonsillitis and instructions to use over-the-counter painkillers - despite her mum Geeta and dad Mukesh's pleas for a course of antibiotics after reading about Strep A in the news. The next evening, Geeta spotted white pus in the back of her daughter's throat and wanted to rush her back to A&E. As they were heading out the door, Mukesh thought the schoolgirl was choking so patted her on the back. She collapsed and went into cardiac arrest, suffering severe brain damage that ended her life in Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) five days later.

Ellie Kempley passed away in September 2022 "without warning or reason" following a typical Friday evening with her family. Ellie's brother, James, went to check on his sister after getting a "funny feeling" and found her unresponsive, reports Yorkshire Live. It was later revealed, following a postmortem, that Ellie, from Harrogate, died from SADS (Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome) - a sudden heart attack. The family were left shocked, angry and heartbroken by Ellie's sudden passing. Now, one year on from Ellie's death, the family, along with Ellie's boyfriend Ryan and her friends, are determined to commemorate her by establishing a scholarship in her memory at the Maria Montessori Institute, for aspiring teachers just like Ellie.
Law graduate, 25, dies after suffering complications during cosmetic surgery

A healthy 25-year-old law graduate has died from a cardiac arrest while getting cosmetic surgery. Dayana Loy de Oliveira Freire went for a pre-operative assessment on Tuesday September 12. A day later, during the surgery under anaesthetic, she experienced complications. According to her surgeon at Hospital Jacob Facuri in Goiânia, Brazil, her heart rate slowed as her liposuction incisions were being closed. She then had a cardiac arrest and passed away. Plastic surgeon Bruno Granieri said he and his medical team tried to resuscitate her for three hours but to no avail. Her devastated father, Duilio Alves Freire, said: “She was 25 years old, with no illness, was in perfect shape before going into surgery and came out dead.” Police in Goiás state are now investigating the case after Dayana’s family reported the incident. They are treating her death as “accidental” pending receipt of the forensic report.

A Dunston mum who was "soul of the party" has tragically died at the young age of 39 after suffering a cardiac arrest. Tamara Cooper spent a week in the critical care unit at Northampton General Hospital before the equipment keeping her alive was withdrawn. Her sister Shona Naylor, 41, has now setup a GoFundMe page to go towards the Swan Room end-of-life care facility at the hospital. Shona describes how she received a call on July 31 that Tamara had suffered a cardiac arrest. She said: "They had managed to revive her as they had used the defibrillator. When we got there they had put her into an induced coma to give her body a chance to rest and then they transferred to critical care. The doctors explained to my mum they had to do tests and because her heart had stopped beating for such a long time she had a lack of oxygen to the brain. Unfortunately, on the following Monday (August 7) they sat us down and there was no brain activity.”

Jakub Rutecki was found dead inside a caravan at Black River Drove off Meare Road in Glastonbury before 6 am on Friday, August 18. The ambulance service attended the scene along with police officers, who have since confirmed the death was non-suspicious. Investigations into the 21-year-old's death are still ongoing on behalf of the coroner's court.

Its with a shattered heart I have to write this post to let you all know that my best friend, my partner, my special girl Joanne passed away just after 10 am today. Those who know her well will be aware she has had a very rare blood disorder all her life but lived with it well until 2 years ago when she had what they called a catastrophic event, her blood disorder caused her blood to clot and cause all sorts of issues, and caused all her internal organs to suffer some damage. Skip forward 12 months and the same again, but again she proved all the doctors wrong and pulled through. I have never in my life met anyone with such a will to live, but sadly with every attack came further internal damage. Joanne suffered over the last few days with gallstones , but also an infection in her stomach that grew and led to her getting sepsis. I love you Joanne Stones, i always have and always will. Until we meet again, sleep well my love.

Family's heartache over unexplained death of eight-week-old baby [2021]

The Devon parents of an eight-week-old baby who was tragically found lifeless in his cot have been told it has not been possible to find a medical reason to explain his sudden and unexpected death. The baby, who DevonLive has chosen not to name out of respect to his grieving parents, was born at Torbay Hospital in September 2021, in good health. The inquest heard the baby was taken to hospital on November 15 and again on November 18. On both occasions, he was deemed medically fit to be discharged after tests and observations were carried out. Evidence was also heard from forensic pathologist Dr Russell Delaney who carried out a post-mortem to determine the baby's cause of death. He explained there was no evidence of bronchiolitis which could have caused or contributed to his death. Despite extensive testing, none identified a cause of death resulting in a conclusion of sudden unexpected death in infancy. Dr Delaney said: "We do not fully understand the causes of why these children die suddenly. Possibly they can have some underlying cardiological or heart abnormality we are unaware of or are metabolically vulnerable so they may be vulnerable to death in that very early stage." Recording a conclusion of sudden unexpected death in infancy at eight weeks, assistant coroner Nicholas Lane said: "There is nothing obvious from the medical perspective eternally or internally that can explain his death."

The death has been announced of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta broadcaster Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí. He died at his home in Cois Cláidigh in Gaoth Dobhair, Co. Donegal on Tuesday at the age of 53. Mr Mac Aodha Bhuí started working with RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta in the early nineties, and his name became synonymous with the station. In a statement issued on Tuesday night, RnaG said, "He was one of the best-known Irish-language broadcasters in the country, and over the years was instrumental in introducing people from all walks of life to the language and culture, and to making them feel welcome within its community." President Michael D Higgins also paid tribute to the late broadcaster following his death.

It's a mystery how so many people can drop dead and seemingly no one in a position to do so mentions the vaccine, at least in earshot of the obit. I suppose it's not polite to speculate on the cause of someone's dying. We defer to medical professionals for that sort of thing. The cause of the sudden deaths is turning out to be as hard to pin down as JonBenét Ramsey's killer.
