CANADA
Note: Obituaries from Ontario will be in next week’s compilation.
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

A philosopher “died suddenly” in Ontario:
Catherine Hundleby, 57
August 28, 2023
Catherine Hundleby, professor of philosophy at the University of Windsor [Ontario], has died unexpectedly of a pulmonary infection on Saturday, August 26. Professor Hundelby, 57, worked in epistemology, the philosophy of argumentation, and feminist philosophy, combining these interests in recent works such as “Feminist Approaches to Argumentation,” for the Stanford Enyclopedia of Philosophy and “Thinking Outside-In: Feminist Standpoint Theory as Epistemology, Methodology, and Philosophy of Science” in the Routledge Handbook of Feminist Philosophy of Science. Professor Hundleby joined the philosophy faculty at Windsor in 2003. Her primary appointment was in the Department of Philosophy, and she was cross-appointed to the department of Women’s and Gender Studies. Prior to her time at Windsor, she was an assistant professor at Eastern Oregon University. She earned her PhD from Western University, her MA from the University of Guelph, and attended the University of Toronto for her undergraduate degree.
A gastroenterologist “died suddenly” in Quebec:
Gervais Tougas, 65
August 31, 2023
Passed away suddenly on August 24, 2023, near Parry Sound (Ontario), at the age of 65, Gervais Tougas. Though his roots were in Bedford, his curiosity and thirst for knowledge led him to pursue medical studies at McGill University and McMaster University, followed by studies at John Hopkins Medical Centre in Baltimore to pursue his subspecialty interest in bowel motility. Dr. Tougas was a gastroenterologist, clinical scientist, and Professor of Medicine at McMaster University for 23 years before pursuing his career in Switzerland with Novartis Pharma, where he held multiple leadership roles over nearly 20 years. Everywhere he worked, Gervais was recognized for his integrity, his curiosity, his determination, and his sound judgment. It was also in Switzerland that Gervais discovered his passion for hiking, a hobby that allowed him to remain active, explore, travel, reflect and relax. He regularly walked the trails near his residence in Macolin, taking in breathtaking landscapes and the view of the Alps he held so dear. Since retiring, he had begun to undertake longer hikes, including the Way of St. James, the Via Alpina and the West Coast of Ireland, often accompanied by his daughters.

Vancouver police announce police corporal’s death
August 25, 2023
The Vancouver Police Department said Thursday a corporal died unexpectedly over the weekend while off duty. The department thanked the community for its thoughts and prayers following the death of Zachary “Zac” Merrill. The agency did not release how Merrill died and said it is respecting his family’s privacy. The Vancouver Police Officers’ Guild created a fundraiser for his family. The fundraiser states Merrill was the unit leader of the crisis negotiation team and a captain and explosives ordinance disposal specialist with the U.S. Army. It says he was 43 years old. “We all know how life can change in an instant. The unexpected loss of a loved one has left the Merrill family facing not only the emotional toll of grief but also the practical challenges that come with such a profound loss,” the fundraiser states.

A personal trainer “died suddenly” in Nova Scotia:
Robert Joseph "Bobby" Chisholm, 62
September 4, 2023
Surrounded and supported by family and the amazing staff at Saint Martha’s Regional Hospital, Bobby’s earthly journey ended on September 1st, 2023, after a courageous encounter with multiple myeloma. As an accomplished young athlete, Bobby was part of the 1975 Nova Scotia Canada Games Speed Skating Team and the 1976 Wrigley National Midget Hockey Championships. While attending StFX he was a member of the varsity and junior varsity hockey teams and the varsity wrestling team. Upon graduation, Bobby moved to Saskatchewan to begin his first career as a teacher. A few years later, he stepped into his second career, spanning 20 years with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Following his retirement from policing in 2005, Bobby remained focused on service, sharing openly with peers and community about his journey with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He also became a certified personal trainer and mentor for elite athletes and first responders. In August 2021, Bobby discovered Rally Point Retreat, a nature-based respite center for essential service members and their families in Sable River, Nova Scotia. Rally Point and its founders Bob and Johan Grundy (along with their puppies Maggie and Sarah) welcomed Bobby with open arms and hearts, fulfilling Bobby’s long-stated goal to find community and healing in nature. Rally Point’s extended welcome, acceptance, and care for our family granted us the gift of safe and comforting quality time, especially significant given Bobby’s eventual diagnosis with multiple myeloma in May 2022.

September 1, 2023
In Montreal, on Wednesday August 30, 2023 passed away, at the age of 47, Sandra Grappin. It is with great sadness that I write these words to you today. I was ready to do anything to fight the disease, because for me it was inconceivable not to stay with my family. I have reached a stage where I have undergone several chemotherapy treatments, but it seems that the doctors have exhausted all options to cure my illness. My diagnosis is histiocytosis, a rare virus that has attacked the brain and spinal cord. I have always helped my children in their studies and I have done my best as a single mother. I was the happiest grandmother in the world. Unfortunately, the chemo is not working as expected and my condition is deteriorating (I can't walk anymore, I hardly hear anymore). I am very grateful for all the love and support I have received so far. I always did my best to help my children and was a happy grandmother. But now I can't work anymore and I can't support myself anymore. I just want to be able to spend my last days with my family without having to worry about money.

Shavonne sent many text messages a day, which warmed our hearts. Shavonne loved Disney and enjoyed a surprise 30th birthday trip to Disneyland, along with a cruise. Her favourite band was the Imagination Movers. Shavonne had a smile that could light up a room and an enormous sense of humour. Thank you to the staff at the Aberdeen Hospital and her VON team. Shavonne always made it clear that she wanted to be home. Thank you for the amazing care from her doctors, especially Dr. Jeans.
