Many factors may be driving the increase in early-onset colorectal cancer.
It’s not easy to take a magnifying glass to people’s lives and deduce what may be causing their disease. Sifting through a person’s diet history and past environmental exposures is complicated, Lieu says. “People have difficulty remembering what they ate yesterday, let alone their entire lives.”
That’s one reason the early-onset colorectal cancer picture is still so cloudy. Today, scientists are investigating an assortment of potential disease drivers, including obesity, antibiotics, the gut microbiome, alcohol intake, delivery by cesarean section and a diet rich in red meat and sugar.

“excessive heat”:
Mailman collapses and dies in front yard while on delivery as sweltering 115F heatwave grips Texas
June 23, 2023
A Texas mailman collapsed and died in the front yard of a home while he was out on a delivery during the excessive heatwave which continues to grip the state. United States Postal Service worker Eugene Gates Jr, 66, was on his usual route delivering post door to door in Lakewood, Dallas on Tuesday. But he suddenly collapsed in a front yard and the homeowner ran outside to perform CPR. His wife Carla received a call after 4 pm which said he was rushed to hospital but he later died. He went down his usual route before he collapsed and died during one of the hottest afternoons of the year with temperatures at the highest since 1980 and near record humidity. The USPS has not confirmed if Gates died from a heat-related illness. 'The postal service is deeply saddened by the loss of life… our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this time,' a spokesman said.

Guardsman Dies After Fitness Test, age 19
March 15, 2023
A junior enlisted National Guard soldier died earlier this month after a physical fitness test during a drill weekend, according to the service. Spc. Jaykob Pruitt, 19, of Bennington, Oklahoma, served as a cavalry scout with 1st Squadron, 180th Cavalry Regiment, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. He collapsed after completing the two-mile run portion of the Army Combat Fitness Test, or ACFT, on March 4. CPR was administered, but he was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital. A senior National Guard official with knowledge of the circumstances surrounding Pruitt's death said there are indications that pre-workout supplements and caffeine may have been complicating factors; the official discussed details of the incident with Military.com on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to the press on the matter. The use of caffeine supplements is a growing concern in the service. A 2019 report published by the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute found that pre-workout supplements and other sources of high caffeine doses can lead to side effects, including heart abnormalities and nausea.

MEXICO
Note this headline’s suggestion that the nine fatal heart attacks on the streets of Tabasco were due to the “infernal heat.”
While that may well have been a factor, the rate of fatal heart attacks in Mexico (that is, those that made headlines) had been unusually high throughout the cooler month of March:
17 died of heart attacks the week of March 1;
11 died the week of March 8;
11 died the week of March 15;
13 died the week of March 22.
There are 9 deaths due to heart attacks on the street, and the infernal heat
April 12, 2023
In recent days, there has been an increase in the number of cases of heart attacks on public roads in the population of Tabasco, Mexico. From March 8 to yesterday, April 11, nine cases of deaths due to myocardial infarction have been reported, which has generated alarm among the population, especially in this season of high temperatures. On Tuesday, April 11, three new cases of deaths due to heart attack were reported. The first of them occurred when 36-year-old José Carlos was walking along Quintín Arauz Street in the city of Villahermosa with his wife. A sudden cardiac arrest surprised him and took his life. Later, in the municipality of Macuspana, a 45-year-old man also lost his life due to a heart attack. On the same day, one more death was reported in the Plaza Villahermosa subdivision, this time it was a 66-year-old man who also suffered a heart attack. These deaths highlight the seriousness of the situation. These are in addition to those that have occurred since March 8, when a man died while driving his car on Nueva Imagen Avenue in the Oil colony, in the city of Villahermosa. On March 22, four people between the ages of 47 and 62 lost their lives due to heart problems, heat stroke and high blood pressure, all related to the high temperatures that were being recorded. That day at dawn, a 65-year-old woman was also found dead on the street in the Tamulté neighborhood of Las Barrancas; while high temperatures and heart problems caused the death of three more people in the Casa Blanca, Linda Vista and Carrizal neighborhoods. The latest death was that of a 60-year-old man who lost his life due to heat stroke while participating in a football match in the fields of the Carrizal subdivision.
“Cardiac arrhythmia” causes sudden death (and “it is natural”):
What is sudden death? Can it be prevented?
January 11, 2023
In recent days the people of Veracruz have mourned several cases of sudden death. In the last few days three people have lost their lives suddenly, without apparent cause, this type of death is due to a sudden and unexpected cardiac arrest, in a person who is apparently healthy, indicated the doctor Lorenzo Castañeda Pacheco. “Many adults have never had a complete medical check-up, much less an electrocardiogram or other studies to find out the state of their hearts. The main cause of sudden death is a cardiac arrhythmia (ventricular fibrillation), with which the heart loses its ability to contract in an organized way and stops beating," he said. He added that a person, a victim of sudden death, first loses his pulse and, in a few seconds, consciousness and the ability to breathe. “If he doesn't get immediate attention, he passes away in a few minutes. A sudden death has the following characteristics: it is natural, it is unexpected and it is fast, the person dies in less than an hour”, he added.

‘Brits are dying in their tens of thousands - and we don't really have any idea why'
May 13, 2023
Tens of thousands more Brits were dying than expected and experts aren’t quite sure why that is. From May to December last year, there were 32,441 excess deaths in England and Wales, excluding deaths from Covid. The spikes in excess deaths can be attributed to a number of causes, but it isn’t clear what’s driving these spikes or causing these drop-offs. Similarly, earlier in 2022, excess deaths dipped well below average levels, with one expert group speculating to the Mirror that a ‘mortality displacement’ effect might explain why so many deaths are bunched up in the space of several months, being passed on from the months prior.
Professor David Coleman, Emeritus Professor of Demography at Oxford University, told the Mirror that no one knew for certain what had caused so many deaths throughout last year. He pointed out that, post Covid, the UK’s population had been changed through the deaths of a significant proportion of elderly due to the virus. He explained: “Once those poor people have been packed off, the remaining population should be healthier, there should be a period afterwards where deaths are lower than usual but that hasn’t happened.”

Popular Truro character died after collapsing outside pub on New Year's Eve
February 1, 2023
A popular local character died after collapsing outside a Truro pub on New Year's Eve 2021. Martin Jason Francis Dawes, best known as Jason, collapsed at the City Inn in Truro and an inquest into his death has failed to ascertain exactly how Martin died. The inquest heard that pathologists couldn't determine an exact cause of death despite a thorough examination. Only a relatively small amount of alcohol was found in Jason's system and no physical injuries were visible. A cause of death was recorded as unascertained. Despite the best efforts of paramedics at the scene, Jason passed away after the collapse. There was no suspicion of any third party involvement. Concluding the inquest, assistant coroner for Cornwall Emma Hillson stated that Jason's heart was normal and an examination of his body found no traumatic injuries. She added that he didn't take drugs and the only possible factor found was blood vessel congestion that could have led to a heart failure.

After three bathing dramas in the canton of St. Gallen: this is what an expert says about the danger in the water
June 12, 2023
Saturday evening, Linth Canal: At 18.15 hrs, emergency services recover a lifeless person from the Linth. A large number of rescue workers from the police, rescue service, sea rescue, fire brigade and Rega had been searching for the missing person. Only death can be determined for the 20-year-old Swiss from the canton of St.Gallen. Sunday afternoon, Drei Weieren, St.Gallen: At 16 o'clock there is a swimming accident in the Mannenweiher: A 36-year-old Bulgarian, who according to initial findings could swim poorly, drowns in the Mannenweiher. The 36-year-old can only be recovered dead by divers of the Cantonal police Thurgau. Sunday evening, Lake Constance in front of Altenrhein: Shortly before 18.30 the Cantonal Emergency Call Centre St.Gallen receives the message that a 14-year-old is missing on Lake Constance in front of Altenrhein. The teenager got off a sailing ship to swim in Lake Constance. He and the boat were subsequently driven apart. A large number of rescue workers are on duty, but had to stop the search when darkness set in. Three tragic swimming accidents in one weekend. How do relatives deal with such a blow of fate? Could something have been prevented, helped, saved someone? Reto Abächerli is the Managing Director of the Swiss Life Saving Society (SLRG) and responsible for drowning prevention. In this capacity, he also advises the World Health Organization (WHO). He says: "What exactly leads to an emergency situation in the water in each case often remains unclear.”

Poor “work-life balance”:
After 3 Czech diplomats die suddenly, Prague urges staff to improve work-life balance
April 17, 2023
Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský has sent a letter to foreign ministry staff asking them to find a better balance between professional and personal lives, after three Czech diplomats aged 46 to 55 died suddenly in the past five months. The deaths of the three diplomats, who died of natural causes, “show that the position of a diplomat involves working in extremely difficult conditions and often in isolation from family,” Lipavský said. “Our colleagues carry out this service even in war zones under tight security measures with limited mobility in the country of posting. Diplomats are exposed not only to great pressure in their professional and personal lives, but also to often difficult climatic conditions.” Last month, the Czech Republic’s Deputy Ambassador to Israel Monika Studená died suddenly at the age of 50. In February, Jakub Dürr, the Czech ambassador to Poland died aged 46. And in November 2022, the Czech Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein Kateřina Fialková died suddenly at the age of 55.

ITALY
A note about the “extreme heat” as a possible cause of death reported throughout today’s (late July) compilation (a comment from a reader in Italy):
Some of these reports are suggesting that the heat is a cause of death. In Italy the media is fear mongering about the "extreme" heat. It's nothing unusual [compared to prior years], but now many are afraid to go outside during the day. Now, weather forecasts and apps are predicting higher temperatures a week or more in advance and are not adjusting the temps when those predictions (lies) are obviously wrong. BBC tweets a temperature for Sicily which is 10°C HIGHER [20 degrees F] than the BBC app for Palermo, Sicily. What's going on? Both temperatures are from BBC Weather, they are 10°C off. One is for locals, one for those abroad. What can we conclude?
Moreover, the toll in “sudden deaths” among Italians had been just as high for many months before, when temperatures were lower.

The Economist: A clue to China’s true covid-19 death toll
July 20, 2023
On July 13th the authorities in Zhejiang, a rich coastal province, released what they probably thought was innocuous data about cremations in the first quarter of 2023. Around 171,000 took place during that time, up by 73% compared with the same period last year. The jump was undoubtedly caused by a wave of covid-19; the central government lifted all covid controls in December 2022. Just under 5% of China’s population aged 65 or older lives in Zhejiang. If one assumes that its share of covid deaths is similar (the disease mainly kills the old), a simple extrapolation suggests that there were 1.6m excess deaths across China in the first quarter, which is roughly in line with our modelled estimate of the country’s covid death toll. The central government, though, has acknowledged fewer than 84,000 deaths from covid on the mainland since early December. The data from Zhejiang was quickly removed from the internet.

A 40-year-old strong man lost his voice while riding a roller coaster, his face turned black, and he died of myocardial infarction due to excessive fright. Although the rides are exciting and exciting, they should be done within our means. A doctor in Taiwan shared on the show that a strong man in his 40s was overly frightened while riding a roller coaster, resulting in sudden myocardial infarction and sudden death. The case shared on the program refers to a strong man in his 40s with no history of chronic diseases who once went to an amusement park with his friends to ride a roller coaster. After sitting for a few times, my friend found that he suddenly changed from screaming to completely losing his voice; when he looked again, he found that his face was blue, and he felt that something was wrong. But the roller coaster was still in operation. After the facility stopped, the friend found that the strong man’s face had turned black, and he was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment. And this incident also left a heavy shadow on the friend of the deceased, who no longer rides the roller coaster.
