My nearest and dearest thought I was crazy, then I read a tiny news item about chicken farms being shut down in Georgia (the US one). In my rural area local restaurants no longer serve chicken because it’s too expensive to make any profit. Luckily for KFC, they don’t use poultry, lol.

Funny, I grew up in Marin! (Even graduated from Berkeley but my entire family and I are constitutional conservatives.) I recall there being community vegetable gardens there, where perhaps you can create your own plot. But they’ll probably require a booster passport, ha ha! Hope you are able to eventually leave the Bay Area. I did and rarely return.
You can fit a bunch of amaranth/rice/lentils/oatmeal/ etc in Mylar bags in a suitcase of under a bed or even in a night stand. Marin has fabulous foraging. This time of year cleavers and mallow and chickweed and sow thistle and nettles are abundant:). Each of them is mild (when young) and better for you than spinach. If you collect and dry them you have a powerhouse of nutrition for free. You can also gorilla garden in Marin:). (Online support) Sweet potatoes grow beautifully in hanging pots and the greens taste yummy too! In the winter I devote two windows to herbs and green onions...I also bury the tops of carrots which yield fresh delicious greens all season. Doing any of those would prepare you to grow more when you get to move.
