High school athletes are dying at an alarming rate
August 3, 2023
Even though youth sports are a multi-billion-dollar industry, even eclipsing the National Football League, protections for high school athletes are being ignored and kids are dying as a result. The Louisville Courier-Journal, part of the USA Today Network, did some significant reporting on the topic and found that most states and thousands of high schools don’t have “gold standard” policies in place to protect young athletes. What’s frustrating is that the cost of life-saving equipment, often used as a reason not to implement safeguards, is a tiny fraction of what schools spend on athletics. Although many have introduced legislation at the state level to fix the problem, it has been routinely defeated or watered down and, according to the paper’s reporting, policies and laws that are in place have little enforcement and are often ignored. Here’s a blurb from the package, which was entitled “Safer Sidelines”:
"Sudden death in high school sports is not a rare occurrence. It happens multiple times across the nation every year. And sudden cardiac arrest, the leading cause of death in high school athletes, happens once every three days during the school year. This isn’t just a Kentucky problem or a Midwest problem. It’s not only a big-city problem or a small-town America problem. And it’s not just a football problem. Athletes collapsing and dying is a national problem ― one that happens again and again, but rarely goes beyond a local news story. Schools drill for fires and tornadoes because one day, they could happen.
“In the last 10 years, seven students have died from a tornado on school property in the U.S.
“In the last 10 years, no student has died from a fire at a school.
“In the last 10 years, at least 200 students have died playing high school sports. And that’s a conservative estimate."

R&B star Wendell B dies after battle with cancer
August 3, 2023
Over the years, SoulTracks has tended to skew our coverage more toward urban adult contemporary and classic soul artists than blues or southern soul, but there was no way we could ignore the releases of talented singer and songwriter Wendell B, a 6’ 5’ giant of a man who has graced our pages several times. Sadly, today we mourn the passing of Wendell after a long battle with cancer, with the news provided to us by our friends at The Boogie Report. The St. Louis native won for himself a large following, particularly as a southern soul balladeer. But he began as a gospel singer when he was just a child as part of the group The Sensational Wonders. As a teenager, Wendell became more interested in Rhythm & Blues – despite his mother’s objection – and found local entertainers who mentored him on all of the elements of becoming a true stage performer.

Influencer Dies From Fungal Infection After Getting Plastic Surgery at Mexico Clinic
August 3, 2023
A 31-year-old mother and social media influencer in Texas died last week after a months-long battle with fungal meningitis contracted after plastic surgery in Mexico. Crystal Villegas died on Sunday at Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen, Texas, where she had been fighting the serious infection attacking her brain and spinal cord, KVEO reported. Her husband, Juan Tapia, announced her death on Facebook. “She fought hard for 4 months and refused to give in, and even though she lost the battle against this deadly disease, she gained something so much greater. My crystal gained her angel wings,” the post read.
Villegas contracted the infection after undergoing cosmetic surgery at the River Side Clinic in Matamoros, Mexico, in March. Just three weeks after the procedure, the mother of three started getting severe headaches and was soon checked into the hospital. According to the CDC, the clinic is one of two in the city associated with nine deaths from fungal meningitis cases. Both were closed in May, and those who underwent procedures requiring epidural anesthesia from the start of the year until May are considered at risk for contracting the deadly infection.
Villegas had an online following and posted fitness and life content. In an interview with the news station shortly before her death, Villegas spread awareness of the condition and urged others to be careful. “Enjoy life, don’t worry about how you look or anything like that. This whole thing about changing the way we look, it’s not worth it,” Villegas said.

Goldman Sachs Analyst Found Dead in Creek May Have Died From Peanut Allergy: Dad
August 3, 2023
The 27-year-old Goldman Sachs analyst who became the second young man to turn up dead in a New York City creek after visiting the Brooklyn Mirage may have died from a peanut allergy, his father says. John Castic went missing Saturday after attending a concert at the venue, and his body was discovered three days later in Newtown Creek. Castic was found just a few days after another 27-year-old, Karl Clemente, was found dead in the same creek after visiting the Brooklyn Mirage, sparking viral theories of a potential serial killer. But Castic’s dad, Jeff, said the family believes it was all a tragic accident. “We think he either had an allergic reaction—he was allergic to peanuts and maybe ate something without realizing that it contained peanuts—or there was an undetected allergy mixed with alcohol,” he told the Daily Mail. He said his son had begun to feel ill while still at the club. Police sources cited by the New York Post have said Castic had no signs of physical trauma, Clemente’s death was also thought not to be suspicious.

James Lewis, long eyed as suspect in 1982 Tylenol murders, died of pulmonary embolism
August 3, 2023
An autopsy has concluded that James Lewis, the lone suspect in the 1982 Chicago Tylenol murders, died of natural causes in his suburban Boston home last month. The Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner announced Thursday that Lewis, 76, died of pulmonary thromboembolism — a blood clot in the lungs. As the Tribune first reported, Lewis’ body was found in his downtown Cambridge condominium just after 4 p.m. July 9. Police said Lewis’ wife, who was out of town visiting relatives, had asked someone to check on her husband after she was unable to reach him. Police initially said an autopsy was not expected because officers did not find signs of foul play. Lewis also had a history of heart issues. But the state medical examiner launched an investigation that week at the urging of Illinois authorities. Lewis was cremated July 17, according to his death certificate. The document lists his occupation as self-employed artist and writer. The director of the Cambridge-area funeral home that handled his services declined to comment, citing the family’s wishes for a private memorial. In September 1982, seven Chicago-area residents died after swallowing Tylenol capsules laced with potassium cyanide. The victims were Mary Kellerman, Mary McFarland, Mary “Lynn” Reiner, Paula Prince and Stanley, Adam and Terri Janus. Their deaths prompted a national recall of the medicine and led to the adoption of tamper-evident packaging.

Mom of two dies from drinking too much water after feeling dehydrated on family trip
August 3, 2023
An Indiana mother of two who told her family it felt like she couldn’t drink enough water to feel satiated collapsed and died from water toxicity — a rare consequence of drinking too much water too quickly. Ashley Summers, 35, was out at Lake Freeman with her husband and two young daughters over the Fourth of July weekend when she began feeling severely dehydrated. “Someone said she drank four bottles of water in 20 minutes,” her brother Devon Miller told WRTV. “I mean, an average water bottle is like 16 ounces, so that was 64 ounces that she drank in a span of 20 minutes. That’s half a gallon. That’s what you’re supposed to drink in a whole day.” After returning from the trip, Summers passed out in her garage before being taken to IU Health Arnett Hospital. She never regained consciousness, and doctors told her family she had died from water toxicity.
Fan's death caused by 'cardiac issue'
August 4, 2023
Cardiac-related issues caused the death of a 43-year-old woman at Kansas City Chiefs camp last weekend, Mosaic Life Care announced Friday. Jessica Tangen [left] died July 30 while attending the training camp at Missouri Western State University. Mosaic issued a statement Friday that medical professionals attributed the death to cardiac issues. Tangen's family did not want an autopsy performed but authorized the release of additional information on the cause of death, Mosaic said in a statement. Tangen lived in Riverside, Missouri, and had extended family in Horton, Kansas. The woman's 9-year-old daughter, Kyla, said in a recorded interview with Mosaic that her mother was a devoted Chiefs fan and that she was brave and worked hard. Mosaic spokeswoman Joey Austin said it may never be known whether heat played a role in the woman's death. Temperatures had reached into triple digits the week before but had begun to moderate. Temperatures were in the mid to upper 70s during the open practice last Sunday. Austin said Mosaic and other entities conducted an after-incident report following the death and determined that Tangen received prompt and appropriate medical attention. But Austin said organizers have decided to get additional "response bags" with automated external defibrillators, CPR face shields, blankets and other materials due to the large crowds at camp.

Harrisburg, Pa. — A bus carrying up to 50 people traveling from New York to Ohio crashed and hit another vehicle on a Pennsylvania interstate, killing three passengers, state police said. The wreck happened during heavy rain around 11:50 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 81 just north of Harrisburg, state police said. The bus drove off the road, struck an embankment, rolled onto its right side and hit the back of a car that was stopped in the right lane, according to a crash report. Three passengers were declared dead at the scene, the police report said, and others suffered injuries that ranged from minor to severe.

Peter Chan, the bus company manager, said in a brief phone interview Monday that he was “very sorry to hear about the accident” but had no further information because he hadn’t been able to talk to the driver, who was injured in the crash and remains hospitalized.
