CANADA
Note: Due to staff burnout, this week’s compilation is significantly shorter than usual.
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note about suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Aisha Ravindran passed away on March 8, 2023, in the presence of her husband, and her close friend, Sherry. Aisha was born in Kerala, India, where she completed her PhD in English Literature based on the poet Muriel Rukeyser. She taught at St. Theresa’s College, Kerala as an Assistant Professor, then moved to the UAE to teach at MAHE Manipal University, followed by George Mason University and the American University of Ras Al Khaimah. She migrated to Canada in 2014 to complete a PhD in Education (which she planned on defending in the Summer/Fall of 2023) at Simon Fraser University and was also an Associate Professor of Teaching at University of British Columbia – Okanagan campus. She touched the lives of many that she interacted with, from her colleagues and her students to the many friends she made around the world. Such was also the case when she became ill with cancer; her will to live and achieve her dreams were her strength and motivation to carry out her activities despite her struggle with her illness. Her family is grateful to her GP, Dr Zeits Hendriks; her oncologist Dr. Sanjay Gupta; the nurses and staff at the BC Cancer division of Kelowna General Hospital; and the community nurses at Interior health for their various contributions in helping alleviate her illness. Donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation and specifically directed to pancreatic cancer research.

As a family buried an 11-year-old Cree boy who killed himself while in the care of Alberta Children’s Services, the urgency for one of his family members to get custody of her own daughter back from the system has increased to desperation. Dejai Baptiste’s family member says he spent nine of his 11 years of life in foster care. She says she was informed that on March 3, he left his Calgary foster home and killed himself. The province of Alberta tracks and posts the number of children and young adults who’ve died or been seriously injured while receiving services from child welfare agencies. Statistics show Dejai is one of 13 young people who have died in the system already this year, including three infants. The family member who spoke to Global News has mourned, not only Dejai’s death while in care, but two of his other relatives who died in the system too. March 28, 2023
I am an energetic 44-year-old woman with Stage 4 breast cancer. You can help save my life, by making a small donation towards the completion of the cutting-edge specialist treatment I need. After 9 months of standard-of-care treatments, last January doctors gave me a timeline that ran out in March. Knowing that the multiple large tumours in my liver would kill me unless I got them treated, prompted me to seek out some cutting-edge treatments, frustratingly not available through mainstream systems in either Canada or the UK. In September/October I began this treatment. Initially 6 weeks at a clinic in Spain and then another 2 weeks in Turkey (see updates where these are detailed). It is now time to head back to Europe to complete these treatments. It is with a heavy heart that I write to let you know that Kate drew her last breath on March 17, as the morning sun turned the tops of the snow-capped mountains pink.

Ted Briggs, 73
March 30, 2023
Passed away peacefully at the Southeast Integrated Care Centre (long-term care), Moosomin, SK, on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, with his loving family at his side. Ted suffered his first major stroke in August of 2020 that affected his vision. With his determination, Ted worked hard to rehabilitate and gained enough strength and confidence to dance with all of his grandchildren at his granddaughter wedding this past July and celebrate with many family and friends. Shortly after, in August, he had another stroke, this time affecting the mobility in the left side of his body. He spent months in Jowsey House in Yorkton for rehabilitation, and with Hertha’s support, his dedication and determination, he learned to walk again. He was able to move back home to the farm, where he continued diligently working on his therapy and was able to spend both Thanksgiving and Christmas with his family. Ted was on his way to recovery. Unfortunately, another stroke happened in January 2023, this time affecting his speech, swallowing, and movement on the right side of his body. He rallied as best he could with the support of his family, spending time in Regina and Yorkton hospitals, and finally getting into long-term care in Moosomin on March 14. Ted was so excited to be close to home and was full of smiles even though he was often in discomfort and frustrated trying to communicate. Ted had a way of bringing people together, and, even in his passing, he gifted us with time to grieve, reminisce and say goodbye. His passing was too soon, but we are all relieved that he is finally free from pain and has reunited with all those close to us who have gone before.
