CANADA
Note: Because our researcher is on hiatus, a shorter-than-usual list of obits from South America follows the Canada compilation.
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Six dead after plane crashes in Alberta mountains as Canadian police launch probe after mystery plunge
July 30, 2023
Six people have died after a small plane crashed in the Alberta mountains, cops have said. The tragedy took place west of Calgary on Saturday morning, and Canadian police have now launched a probe into the mystery plunge. On Friday night, the aircraft with a pilot and five passengers aboard took off from Springbank Airport, Calgary, and was headed for Salmon Arm, British Columbia. The plane was reported overdue by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton, Ontario, and was contacted by them at 1 am on Saturday. A Royal Canadian Air Force Hercules plane was dispatched to search for the missing aircraft. Searchers located it on Mount Bogart, about 37 miles west of Calgary, by honing in on an emergency locator transmitter, the AP reports. The Hercules crew and Alberta Parks Mountain Rescue responders confirmed there were no survivors. A Transportation Safety Board spokesman says the aircraft was a single-engine Piper PA-32, and the board is investigating the crash.

A psychiatrist in Ontario “died suddenly”:
Reported on July 8:
Dr. Brian Robert Burke MD, FRCP(C) Psychiatrist, 64
July 8, 2023
Windsor - It is with immeasurable sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Brian on July 6, 2023. Only recently stepping back from his Outpatient practice, he has been Staff Psychiatrist at all local hospitals, currently devoted to Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare. He has been, now or at one time, Clinical Coordinator and ACT Psychiatrist for the Essex ACT Team, Director of the Dual Diagnosis Clinic, Undergraduate Director Psychiatry-SWOMEN, Post Grad Director-Psychiatry Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry-Windsor, chair of the ICRC at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and Program Medical Director-Mental Health and Addictions at HDGH. Despite his full career, he was an exemplar of work/life balance. Music was a passion throughout his life; he was a performer and a fan. From the rock and roll and ska bands of his youth, to the Bebop Jazz of the Brian Burke Quartet, Brian thrived on the communal creativity of making music. He insisted on walking the course at Pointe West, sought out live theatre and musical performances, enjoyed discovering new restaurants, and found peace on the beaches of Grand Cayman. And he laughed and laughed a lot. He was “ sui generis” and we shall never see his like again. There is a Brian-sized hole in the universe.

Reported on July 7:
Petronella (Petra) Djurdjijana Janjic, 18
July 7, 2023
Waterdown - Petra was our shining star and her achievements are many. She aced school with straight As, and had just graduated from Westdale High School. She loved the challenge of competitive dancing and cherished the friends she made along the way. She liked baking and cooking with her Mum – with excellent results. She was proud of her driver’s license and the freedom it provided. She spoke French and was learning German, and had hoped to travel to as many places as she could. She had a part-time job at our retirement home, brightening many days for the residents. Also, because of her high marks she was accepted to all the universities she applied to. She chose the University of Toronto (maybe she wanted to be close to home). Petra was ambitious and enthusiastic. She was a serious student and excelled at anything she put her mind to. She was wise beyond her years and loved her family more than anything. She had a big smile that lit up a room. She was always upbeat and lived a very happy and fulfilled life – sadly so much shorter than we’d hoped, but with minimal suffering. For that we are grateful. Donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Petra would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

Hey, you guys, don’t feel guilty,
It was just my time to go.
I can see you’re all feeling sad,
I can see the tears still flow.
My life’s journey ended early,
The path I chose was short.
You all tried your best to change it,
But in the end it was for me to sort.
I know I caused you sadness,
I know I caused you pain,
But I was captured by these demons,
They wouldn’t set me free again.
They took away my freedom,
They took away my choice,
And when they got their hooks in,
You could hear it in my voice.
There were times I tried to fight them,
There was a time I nearly won,
But they came back and overpowered me,
I had nowhere left to run.
I haven’t really left you guys,
I am closer than you know,
I will be the whisper in the wind,
I will be everywhere you go.
One day you will understand
And when your time on earth is done
I will be waiting to take your hand.

He captivated those around him, whether it was at Rockport, Crosstown, the hockey rinks or a neighbourhood garage. Many would say he was the life of the party, or just never left the party until his wife said, “Let’s go!". Trevor loved all sports and passed this passion onto his son. He also passed on his need to have the last word to his daughter. He “1000%” lived everyday to the fullest, with a smile on his face and a story, or many, to tell. Trevor leaves a void that no other will replace in the lives of all who loved him.

Alex Russo, 38
July 18, 2023
Clinton - It is with deep gratitude for his life that we share the passing of Alexander Michael Cragg Russo. Alex was exuberant and passionately authentic, caring, kind and wonderful with eccentric confidence, infectious laughter, and a perfectly crooked smile. Alexander was not shy, not in person, or over the phone or in the kitchen -- where he demonstrated an obscure way with herbs and spices, creating highly suspicious yet delicious masterpieces of flavour and texture. On July 3rd 2023 Alex asked his fiance to be her husband unceremoniously and perfectly sweatily snug on their deck overlooking Lake Okanagan. Alexander lived a full life of laughs, adventure, hard work which he made look easy, love which overflowed from his pores as sweat. He left in a justifiably poetic way, after a long chat with his favourite barber while he finished a fresh fade and ensured his clean lines.

Pain in football: former Atlético Tucumán goalkeeper Daniel Ibáñez died at the age of 25
July 26, 2023
Sad news has moved Argentine and Ecuadorian soccer in recent hours: the death of Atlético Tucumán goalkeeper, Daniel Ibáñez, at 25 years of age. The goalkeeper who was on loan at Chacaritas in Ecuador suffered a lung problem and died this morning in the city of Ambato. Through a statement, the Dean announced the event: “We regret to report the death of goalkeeper Daniel Ibáñez. Our soccer player was playing on loan in Chacaritas de Ambato, in Ecuador, and passed away this morning.” According to the first information, Ibáñez had respiratory problems since Sunday and Monday, while on Tuesday he was hospitalized at an IESS (Ecuadorian Social Security Institute) hospital to undergo new studies. Horacio Montemurro, Argentine coach of Chacaritas, stated on Radio Centro Ambato: “You cannot digest the death of a boy as young and healthy as Daniel Ibáñez was. We were there all night and today he passed away, an incredible thing, 48 hours before he was training normally without drowning”. Regarding his condition, Montemurro specified: "Daniel had the flu, yesterday at noon he went to the doctor, they gave him some medicine and, when he began to take the medication, he began to vomit blood, we hospitalized him as quickly as possible here in Pelileo and as quickly as possible. fast as possible to Ambato. We were in Ambato until 4 in the morning because he arrived with a saturation of 45, he couldn't breathe. He had one lung full of blood and the other one working at 40 percent. Ibáñez was considered a starter and had just played last Wednesday in the 2-0 defeat against Vargas Torres.”

A journalist “died suddenly”:
More mourning in regional journalism: no more notes by Carlos Ledesma
July 26, 2023
For years, after the return to democracy, Carlos Ledesma (69) was the face of the Publi5 newscast, by Vicente López. When Cablevisión bought the local television signal, in addition to presenting news, Ledesma also served as a reporter; and in recent years he has remained in this role. In 2015 the municipality of Vicente López distinguished him for his 23-year career. Carlos Ledesma passed away today, Tuesday the 25th.
If the departure of Osvaldo Magistris tinged regional journalism with sadness, the news about Carlos Ledesma on the same day added surprise to the unease and bitterness. Many journalists ran into Carlos Ledesma on a daily basis in the news, days ago in San Isidro, or in San Martín, before in Vicente López and not infrequently in San Fernando or Tigre. There he was. Carlos was a national announcer for ISER. In his journalistic career he had gone through public television and Radio Provincia. His outstretched hand, his embrace. I greet you from him. There was never a lack of frank greetings from him at a press conference, where he met colleagues for work, or in a conference with an official, who was summoned by a journalistic event.

"You never really know the battle that some people live." Very true words.
I have discovered this maxim in action through sharing in the hardships of others, others who had strengths and vulnerabilities I myself did not share (for good or not). We are all unique in our own way. It would be prudent to remember this while viewing those that have passed in this slaughter.
Each person deserved better than to "die suddenly" or "die unexpectedly". Their age is immaterial. For those that took the shot, they were all taken before their time.

Over and over and over
I do not know which I found more wrenching, the young woman who died "kicking and screaming" or the even younger women who died above her in this roster, who wrote the beautiful poem meant to comfort those who loved her but which stated the pain of living overwhelmed her will to live.
I have lived on this earth some decades and have NEVER heard of of people in their twenties and thirties dying in their sleep or of diabetes. Nor in their forties.
