In memory of those who “died suddenly” in Canada, December 26-January 2, 2022/2023
Saskatchewan baseball player Theo Gibbs (18); Quebec TV writer Claude Paquette; N.B. chef Blair Reobertson; and 385 other across Canada
CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some large populations.
Specifically, we have had trouble finding data on the “sudden deaths” of Asians, East Indians and Jews throughout the country (three large minorities), and of the Filipinos in Alberta. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in the Territories—especially about the large indigenous community, whom Trudeau’s police have sought to “vaccinate” by force. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for that community, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden.
What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.

Our friendship will always be very precious in my heart. With great difficulty, I leave my adorable little girl. You are just beginning your life, while mine is ending. I wish I could give you more kisses, more hugs, talk to you, love you even more that I already love you. My great consolation is to know that you will be deeply loved and accompanied. Thank you to all those who will keep me alive in your heart. I leave my father and my mother. I embrace you both deeply and express my love and gratitude to you. You all made my journey on earth a joyful one. I fought against cancer with all the strength and all the courage I had. Bob slipped away peacefully on December 16th at Moog and Friends Hospice House. He was surrounded by family and friends when he took his final breath. Bob’s battle with cancer was short-lived as he was diagnosed late into the progression of the disease. Though the journey was only nine weeks long, he met the loveliest folks who, without their assistance, he would never have been able to run the race with the grace and dignity that he did.

Daniel was born in Peace River, AB and passed away in Salmon Arm, BC. Dan was sick for a short time, colon cancer was the cause. He worked for Halliburton for numerous years around Alberta when he decided to go overseas. He loved traveling & seeing different countries, always bringing home amazing gifts for the kids (Christmas ornaments always included). We packed up the kids and moved to BC in 2014 to enjoy slightly warmer temperatures. When Covid hit he had to change his course of path and drove truck in the states, the latest company being Reimer Bros Trucking. He enjoyed his many destinations south of the border and would often let us know it’s warmer down there.

Dan "Springer" Shewchuk, 64

Springer had many interests. His love of games and sports started from the basics, home made competition with his brothers and cousins. He walked, biked and golfed for hours; he reffed, coached and played hockey and baseball; he was an avid follower of professional sports too. Springer did many things in this work life. He was a farmer and part of their poultry operation at the time; he joined the army and the railways; he drove an ambulance; he tried the oil rigs; he cooked in restaurants and bartended; he drove trucks and worked for Lilydale in a variety of capacities; he had a delivery business too. On January 23, 2009 John started working at Greenline. He really enjoyed the people; he spoke frequently about them. I asked him a few times as he turned 60 and older as to when he was going to retire. He said why should I retire I like it there and I don’t do any work there anyway. Garry loved his books, doing car, carpentry and woodworking projects, long runs on the coldest of days, watching the Jets play, golfing with his buddies and time in the gym coaching. After being diagnosed with Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), Garry received the very best of our health care system. We would like to thank Concordia Urgent Care and Grace Emergency Room staff for keeping Garry comfortable until the ICU team at HSC took over. The ICU team and consulting doctors worked so very hard to diagnose and care for him during this time.

Kathleen "Kay" LeMessurier, 69
December 19, 2022
Our earthly angel has passed from this life. Our hearts are breaking. From the Mayor Avenue neighbourhood of her youth to the Halls of Presentation and Holy Heart Schools, to the Kiwanis Music Festival or the Arts & Culture Centre stage, Kay's light shone for all to see. An accomplished Soprano, she could charm birds out of trees and more importantly impress Sister Gabriel and Nish Rumboldt. Her business and leadership achievements were numerous, including building a successful network of private business colleges throughout Atlantic Canada and service on the board of directors and vice-chair of Canada Post. To paraphrase Charles Dickens (a favourite author), she made mankind her business. There are a thousand acts of kindness that each of us remember and a thousand more performed with thoughtful anonymity. She was the rock of our families. We would like to express our eternal gratitude to Drs and to the courageous nurses and staff of the Health Sciences Emergency, 4 North B and 4 South A for their unlimited care and compassion.

J. Douglas Smith
December 22, 2022
J. Douglas Smith, of Kings Head, Nova Scotia, died suddenly at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, Nova Scotia early on December 21. Losing Doug is a tremendous blow to his wife, his family and his community. A fiercely proud Nova Scotian, Doug felt things deeply and passionately. Doug was a Mt. Allison alumnus and a chemist by training. He spent most of his career with Michelin Canada. His role with Michelin shaped this young man and brought out the best in him. And in return he greatly influenced Michelin’s role in Canada and around the world. He was a perfectionist and there was no such thing as second best. He coached and mentored many young men and women who went on to have impressive careers of their own, in Canada, in Thailand, in France, in Spain and in the US. Doug stood up for what he believed in, sometimes to a fault. He believed in a strong caring government and the democratic process. He was very loyal to the Liberal Party of Canada. His knowledge of science was beyond impressive. Doug lived in five different countries and he travelled extensively. When he died, plans were in the works to travel to Spain and Portugal.
