CANADA
Note: Because our South America researcher is on hiatus, this compilation includes a few items from Suriname and Argentina.
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

July 27, 2023
It is with great sadness that the family of Steven “Paul” Lobsinger announce his unexpected passing on July 19th, 2023 at the age of 59 at his home in London, Ontario. His nursing career began at Grey Bruce Health Services on their paediatric unit (he was always great with the kids), then to Mount Sinai and St. Michaels in Toronto, working in their Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit. In 1999 he started his career with the Ontario Nurses Association as a Labour Relations Officer, which culminated in his role as Senior Executive for Negotiations/Chief Negotiator. He achieved certificates in Industrial Relations from Queen’s University and was very proud to have attended the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference (GGLC) in 2004. In his work life he has been described as brilliant, wise, a mentor, a calming presence, and a staunch advocate and warrior for nurses and their rights. His passing is a profound loss for the professional nursing community. So many have commented on his story telling and his quick wit, his laugh and that smile! To quote a co-worker “when we think of him we remember how he made us happy, how he made us laugh, helped us when we needed it…he was a person who genuinely cared”. He had also been enjoying his winter sojourns to Mexico with family and friends and anticipating more after his retirement that was set for next spring. As expressions of sympathy, Steve/Paul would have appreciated donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

He was also active in the ministerial food bank. He actively served at the Presbytery level and later at the Northern Spirit Region of the wider church. During the last three years, he had several health problems, which caused him to slow down. He was looking forward to his holiday this year and was excited about some plans he had made.

On July 26 a great heart stopped beating much too soon. With the gift of foresight and perhaps destiny Tina made every moment count; her life was filled with travel, adventure, music, and dance. Tina's travels had her living in Dubai, Hong Kong, and Switzerland, but she always called Canada home. Her degrees had her doing everything from being a Vice Principal for a Special Needs School in Dubai to starting her own English School in Switzerland, which she also taught in Hong Kong. Her hobbies included her Native crafts of beading and jewellery making, attending Pow Wows, quilting, flamenco dancing, hiking and skiing. She also had a massive collection of colouring books and pencils. Her capacity to love unconditionally was extraordinary, and her greatest gift to those who knew her. Donations to Maison McCullough Hospice.

Olga Kristman, 50
July 26, 2023
Toronto - We mourn the loss and celebrate the life of Olga Kristman, mom, painter, cyclist, reader, and curious mind. Olga was raised in Moscow by her parents. She emigrated to Toronto with her husband, Ivan and their son in 1999. When she wasn’t cycling back and forth to work, Olga was an inspired artist whose bold and provocative oil paintings were a spirited revolt against all that was less than beautiful. As an artist, she was as uncelebrated as she was brilliant and unpretentious. A gentle soul with a dark sense of humour, the only thing Olga found unforgivable was a cliché. Olga challenged those in her orbit to be better people, a force of grace and elegance. Olga’s smile was inimitable and she radiated a joy and a love of life. She spent her last years working at CBC Studios in Toronto. Donations in Olga’s memory may be made to Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Rachel Zacharias, 39
August 4, 2023
Rachel Marita Clare Zacharias, a priceless human being, woman, made in the image of God; beloved mother, partner, daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend, was taken unexpectedly from life here, into the hands of the loving and merciful God; on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at the age of 39 years, in Grande Prairie, Alberta. We who love her are bereft, and in great sorrow. This Momma-Bear was all about her babies. She loved to swim with them, enjoy muddy river days, take them on date nights, go sledding, sing and rap with them, create very funny, unique nicknames and lots of endless kisses and cuddles. Holidays were this lady's favorite from abundant meals and gifts to spreading the spiders and cobwebs all over the house. Christmas was a huge playhouse and mountains of gifts. Rachel took pleasure in decorating and interior design and really made it feel like home. There was always a calling for her to reach out to those in need. May Rachel's sudden departure be overruled by the God of love and mercy; and used as only He can, even with tragedy and sorrow and suffering, to bring blessing and mercy on all of us: upon Rachel herself; upon Rachel's dear, dear children, and all her family, and all whom she knew upon the way, in both the hard, and the easy, days and ways. May the grace of Christ erupt, with great power, into unexpected places; in the wisdom and power and vast goodness of God; who can reach far beyond our limits.

Philip Roche, 55
August 1, 2023
Placentia - It is with profound sadness we mourn the sudden passing of a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Philip Roche JR, age 55. Phil was the "salt of the earth" and lived a very relaxed lifestyle. He was a loyal friend to many with the biggest heart. This was evident through the numerous friendships he made with his work family at Emcon, former employees at Wilson’s, and with the Department of Transportation and Works in Saint Bride’s Newfoundland. Phil leaves behind a legacy that will be treasured by many lives he touched here on earth throughout his gift of kindness. Special thanks to the paramedics and emergency staff at the Northern Lights Regional Centre in Fort McMurray for your care and kindness to Phil during his short stay there.

ARGENTINA
Two “died suddenly” in the air:
Woman dies after suffering decompensation on a flight from Barcelona to Argentina
July 31, 2023
A 46-year-old Argentine woman died last Friday in mid-flight while traveling from Barcelona to the Argentine city of Ezeiza. The woman, who was flying with her daughter, received cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for an hour and a half, but ultimately could not be saved. During the flight, she began to suffer a panic attack, including sweating, difficulty breathing and even losing consciousness, but this was not ultimately the cause of her death. An initial report indicates that it may have been pulmonary thromboembolism, caused by a blood clot in the lungs, although local authorities claim they have to wait until they know the results of the tests performed to confirm the cause of death. The death of this passenger is similar to another case that occurred this month on an Aerolíneas Argentinas flight bound for Resistencia, Chaco, where a two-year-old boy suffering from leukemia decompensated mid-flight and died a few minutes after taking off, forcing the captain to return and make an emergency landing.
Sure seems like the turbo cancers are hitting, just as predicted. This is just so damn sad. Never been more glad I didn’t “partake”.
The numbers of deaths of people in their 50s and 60s is astonishing and seems to me unusually high. I wonder if the government is calculating how much they are saving by not having to pay out from the Canada pension plan for all those people.
