Pittsburgh Steelers legend Franco Harris passes away
December 21, 2022
Pittsburgh, PA — Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Famer Franco Harris has died. His death comes just days before the 50th anniversary of the immaculate reception and days before the Steelers were planning to retire his #32 jersey. Harris, who went to Penn State, played for the Steelers from 1972 to 1983 and was famous for that play. The team's dynasty began in earnest when Harris decided to keep running during a last-second heave by Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw in a playoff game against Oakland in 1972. His catch and run off a deflected pass gave the Steelers their first-ever playoff win and is forever immortalized as the immaculate reception. It is considered the most iconic play in NFL history. Harris' son told the Associated Press that his father passed away overnight. No cause of death was given. Harris was 72 years old.

Actress Charlbi Dean's Cause Of Death Has Been Revealed After She Died Suddenly At 32
December 22, 2022
Triangle Of Sadness star Charlbi Dean's cause of death has been ruled an accident as determined by a New York City medical examiner. The actor and South African model died suddenly in New York City in August at the age of 32, and what happened was unknown until now. PEOPLE reports that a spokesperson for the New York City Office of chief medical examiner confirmed that Dean died of bacterial sepsis. The sepsis was a complication from asplenia (the absence of a spleen) due to "remote blunt trauma to her torso," the spokesperson told PEOPLE. The outlet says Dean's bacterial sepsis was caused by an infection with a bacteria known as Capnocytophaga. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Capnocytophaga germs are normal bacteria found in the mouths of people, dogs and cats. Under the right conditions, the germs can cause an infection in people with a weakened immune system, which includes people who have had their spleens removed. The medical examiner did not make the actor's full autopsy public, so it's not known if an animal lick or bite is what caused Dean's infection. In August, Dean's brother, Alex Jacobs, told Rolling Stone that the actress was staying in New York with her fiancé, Luke Volker, when she began experiencing "minor symptoms." The 32-year-old model asked Volker to take her to the emergency room where she died just hours later. Per Cape Town Etc, she previously survived a brutal car wreck in South Africa in 2009 and was hospitalized with several broken bones from that incident.

Long COVID continues to puzzle experts, frustrate patients
December 22, 2022
Albany, NY — Nearly three years into the pandemic, scientists and doctors are still mystified by the condition known as long COVID-19. About a fifth of Americans who had COVID-19 at some point continue to experience chronic symptoms, according to a recent survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But doctors don't know why some develop long COVID and others do not, and there is no known cure for the condition. At the Post-COVID Care Clinic at Albany Medical Center, which has seen more than 900 patients in the last two years, doctors have been collecting data on long COVID to better understand its causes and develop potential treatments. "There are floating hypotheses about post-COVID, one being that there is still some low-grade inflammation that is persisting in the body, but the whole mechanics of that is still not clearly understood," Dr. Anupama Tiwari, pulmonologist and director of the post-COVID clinic, said. There is no standard practice for diagnosing post-COVID syndrome, but Tiwari defines it by symptoms that last more than three months after infection. When a patient comes into the clinic, a pulmonologist tests their lung function. If more information is needed, the patient will also undergo a chest X-ray or CT scan. The most common health problems associated with long COVID are lung fibrosis, digestive problems, blood clots and neurological issues. Those conditions may present as fatigue, a persistent cough, difficulty breathing or a racing heart rate, Tiwari said.
The Rensselaer County Medical Examiner's office has not yet made a determination in the death of Fatima Shah Hussain, a 29-year-old Troy woman who died suddenly Nov. 22, but her friends and family are convinced she died from long COVID, noting her recent health struggles in a Times Union obituary. She had gotten COVID-19 twice, once during the alpha variant, the very first coronavirus strain that circulated in early 2020, and again during the delta surge of 2021. After her second bout with the virus, Hussain began experiencing near-constant nausea and digestive issues, accompanied by extreme lethargy, relatives said. Whether long COVID can be deadly is controversial. State and federal health agencies do not track long COVID deaths and some medical experts say it's impossible to say conclusively it was a contributing factor.
Before COVID-19, Hussain was a runner and CrossFit enthusiast. She was passionate about teaching — she had left a career in engineering to teach middle school math and science in Schenectady County schools and Hebrew Academy in Albany — but in the last year, the classroom became overwhelming and Hussain left her job, friends and relatives said. "She was just really foggy," her partner Daniel Morrissey said. "She was really smart and really bright and an amazing conversationalist. That wasn't present in the last couple of months. She had a lot of trouble getting out of bed and just getting to the bathroom. She couldn't eat because she would be nauseous. And then randomly, she'd be able to scale three flights of stairs and be fine." She visited specialists who ran tests, including recently, a colonoscopy and endoscopy, but the results all came back normal. She was not aware of Albany Med's long COVID clinic, relatives said. "She was looking for a doctor who could figure out what was going on," her sister Amna Hussain said. "She complained about a lot of doctors not believing long COVID is even a thing." A week before her death, Hussain seemed better, her sister said. She had gotten a part-time job at the library and had an interview at Troy city schools. On her way home, she had breakfast with her mother and sister. The suddenness of Hussain's passing has been difficult to come to terms with, her sister said. "It was like any other Tuesday. I work nights, so I was lounging around at home all day. I got up, cleaned the litter boxes, and saw I had messages from her roommate saying that Fatima had fallen down the stairs and had a cardiac arrest." The roommate, hearing Hussain's fall, found her vomiting at the bottom of the stairwell, Amna Hussain said. Within minutes, Fatima Hussain was gone. Paramedics were unable to revive her. According to the Rensselaer County Medical Examiner's office, Hussain's cause of death is pending. If the investigation confirms the family's assertion that long COVID was a factor, her situation would be rare.

Man arrested while having heart attack dies after cops 'restrain and give him ketamine'
December 21, 2022
A man arrested while he was having a heart attack later died after police detained him outside a dollar store and gave him ketamine, a lawsuit has alleged. Jeremy Lee Thompson, 34, was in his Honda Accord outside a Dollar General last May in Alabama when he was found clutching his chest and asking for help. Police spotted him and walked over as Jeremy feared he was having a stroke, according to a federal lawsuit filed last month. The lawsuit says police found an open container of alcohol in Jeremy's car and he was arrested for public intoxication. Police did not conduct a field sobriety test and instead took him to the county jail to leave him in the “drunk tank”, the suit alleges. Jeremy was taken to Geneva County jail, put in restraints for more than an hour and was given the drug ketamine, it is claimed. The complaint filed in federal court in Alabama’s Middle District last month reads: "The officers brought Thompson into the jail by supporting him as Thompson’s feet dragged on the ground." By the time Jeremy was taken to the hospital he was pronounced dead from a heart attack, according to the complaint. It was later said the cause of death as the “Toxic effects of Methamphetamine", according to the suit. Tests later showed that Jeremy had no alcohol in his system, the suit alleges.

Medical Biz Claims CEO Hid Terminal Cancer Diagnosis—and Stole $700K
December 20, 2022
Las Vegas, NV - A dental implant manufacturer is suing its late CEO’s widow, claiming her husband, who died last spring at the age of 44, hid his cancer diagnosis from higher-ups, leaving the company unable to train a replacement in time. That’s according to a lawsuit obtained by The Daily Beast, which accuses Liran Hagbi, the former chief executive of Noris Medical, of having misled the company’s chairman regarding his condition. “Towards the end of 2021, Zvika Genis, the controlling shareholder and Chairman of Noris Medical, noticed that Mr. Hagbi was not adequately performing his duties and appeared to be sluggish and inattentive,” states the civil suit, which was filed Thursday in New York State Supreme Court. “On several occasions, Mr. Genis asked Mr. Hagbi if he was ill or if there was anything affecting his ability to perform his duties. Mr. Hagbi responded to each inquiry that he was not ill.”
Genis “was, of course, concerned with Mr. Hagbi’s health and well-being,” the filing continues, “but was also concerned that Noris Medical should function effectively.” His fears were apparently realized on April 28, when Hagbi passed away. As a result of Hagbi’s “misrepresentations,” Noris was allegedly “unable to prepare for Mr. Hagbi’s death or transition other employees into his roles.” Following Hagbi’s death, the lawsuit says “employees decided to terminate their agreements, vendors took their business elsewhere and Noris Medical lost significant sums of money.” Since Hagbi was a corporate officer, the filing argues, he “breached his fiduciary duty owed Noris Medical by failing to disclose his terminal illness… and by intentionally misrepresenting that he was not suffering from any illness.” The former IDF soldier kept quiet even though he “knew that the seriousness of the illness would impede his ability to work and significantly impact the business,” according to the suit, which Noris brought against Hagbi’s wife, Neta, as the administrator of his estate. Hagbi lived in Manhattan with his family and took the reins at Noris Medical in 2019, leading the Nesher, Israel-based firm from its U.S. base in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In addition to allegedly hiding his cancer diagnosis, the lawsuit also accuses Hagbi of having embezzled “in excess of $700,000” from Noris Medical. After Hagbi died last year, the company reviewed all the payments the former chief exec received while at the helm, Thursday’s lawsuit states. The audit allegedly found that Hagbi had authorized payments to himself in excess of amounts to which he was entitled,” including “greater compensation than he was entitled to, personal expenses which he submitted as business expenses, and payments for unauthorized expenses.” Noris Medical’s lawsuit argues it is “against equity and good conscience” for Hagbi’s estate to benefit from his “unjust enrichment,” and is asking for damages “in excess of $700,000,” to be determined at trial.

56-year-old man collapses, dies after walking to Alabama prison infirmary
December 21, 2022
A 56-year-old man died in an Alabama prison after collapsing on his way to the infirmary. The Alabama Department of Corrections confirmed Tuesday that Danny Wayne Moore died in Bibb Correctional Facility in Brent, Alabama, on Dec. 17. ADOC spokesperson Kelly Betts said Moore walked to the prison's health care unit and then collapsed. Medical staff attempted live-saving measures and paramedics were called, but Moore died. Betts said that Moore's cause of death is pending an autopsy and investigation by the ADOC's Law Enforcement Services Division. Court records show Moore was from Athens, Alabama.
Because the ADOC does not report when those in its custody die, the Montgomery Advertiser relies on tips from incarcerated people and their loved ones to report on deaths in the Alabama prison system. 2022 has been a deadly year in Alabama prisons. Monthly reports from ADOC show 179 men and women died in state custody through the first nine months of the year. The Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit representing prisoners across the country, earlier this month reported there have 222 prison deaths this year. That would make 2022 already the deadliest year on record in Alabama prisons, based on an Advertiser analysis of previous ADOC statistical reports.
